A TRADE PROPOSERS DREAM...

Jason Gregor
July 24 2013 11:03AM

The day is finally here. Shea Weber can officially be traded. OMG.

I'm sure Craig MacTavish had a reminder in his phone to call David Poile this morning.

And the conversation went something like this....**

MacT: David, my man, what is happening. You been to Tootsies lately?

Poile: MacT, things are well. I only go to Tootsies during the season. I like to interact with the fans.

MacT: Smart. I just go to the bar outside our dressing room at Rexall. Some nights I need a beer just to watch our games...Anyways... I was thinking we should talk about a Weber deal.

Poile: Are you serious?

MacT: I've received loads of emails from fans outlining what it would take, so I want you to hear them. I've had a tough summer.

Poile: Awesome. I love fan proposals. Usually they are very fair.

MacT: How about Nick Schultz, Ales Hemsky, a 2014 first rounder and Linus Omark. He's the best forward not in the NHL.

Poile: Good one. I'll take two guys with one year remaining on their deals, and a guy who is great in shootouts. My fans would love it. I think my owner would be even happier. He's paid Weber $27 million for 48  games. I'm sure he wants to sell low now. You got any other offers, I need a good laugh.

MacT: You bet. My inbox had lots, plus when I listen to Gregor's show I hear some beauties from callers and texters.

Poile: One day I'd love to announce one of those trades. Just for fun. Too bad you can't make trades on April Fools Day.

MacT: Okay...how about this one... (laughs)... Jeff Petry, Ales Hemsky, Teemu Hartikainen, he was just invited to Finland's Olympic camp, Marc Arcobello, he's a skilled forward, and Omark, the best player not in...(bursts out laughing)... Sorry I can't even finish that statement. Best player not in NHL...Have any of those guys ever panned out.

Poile: Don't get me started. F*&*(#)* Radulov. They should have called him best floater not in the NHL. You thought Penner was a floater, hell, at least Penner had a pulse, a sense of a humour and he'd fill up on pancakes in the morning. Radulov loved vodka and late night clubs. That prick would booze it up in the playoffs. Now I'm annoyed. Any proposals that don't involve me bending over and holding my feet?

Mact: I love hearing you get riled up. I guess Pens wasn't that bad after all, and he is funny.

Poile: I'm going to go on a fanboard site and say you like him and tried to sign him.

MacT: Screw you, I had some people in Edmonton actually think he'd be a good fit for our team. So... honestly what will it take to get Weber.

Poile: I've paid him $27 million the past 12 months for 48 (*$&#()@ games. I'd need a lot. I'd need one of Hall, Eberle or Yakupov, and then Gagner plus something else. My fans are rabid, but after Weber, Rinne and Mr. Underwood they couldn't name two players. I need offence, and you have a lot of it. You pick which winger to give me along with Gagner and your 2014 first rounder...

MacT: That is steep. Can't do it.

Poile: How about I take Omark in the deal.

MacT: I can't give you one of those kids, Gagner AND Omark. The fans would revolt. Most believe he could be the main piece in the Weber deal. Good grief Dave, wake up.

Poile: (laughs)... Now you're fired up...So one of the kids and Gagner is a no go?

MacT: Will you throw in Rinne with Weber?

Poile: We're done. See you in late November....I'll take you to Tootsies. I have a VIP table. Do me a favour and bring some of those emails, I'll likely need a good chuckle.

**This was not an actual conversation...Well, we can't confirm that it was...**

I don't think Gregors made up character would be enough of a plug to drop how much money he makes per year on the Oilersnation blog to show everyone he knows what he is talking about.

This Pajamah guy is for real

Thanks for this JG. I had a good laugh.

And for those who can't seem to find the humour in this, c'mon man! I get it, we've sucked for a long time and you're angry. If we've only sucked for 3 or 4 years I can understand but we've sucked for almost a decade now (except one year). If you haven't developed a sense of humour about our Oilers by now, then you might just need to quit them.

You would suggest sugercoating everything that a caller ever says and saying that a great trade idea when it's out to lunch.

Callers, bloggers, whoever, have a freedom of speech to talk about and suggest anything they want. However, they don't get to say anything they want without being ridiculed or told that their ideas are stupid if in fact they are.

If you don't like being called stupid when you say inaccurate or off the wall things then don't say them or go read a different blog.

This is where I feel my point is being missed.

Please, gladly, call someone on their BS. If someone calls 1260 and proposes a dumb trade, here is what I would love to hear

"thanks for the call, ________, but no GM would realistically make THAT trade.... what it would take would likely be _________" ....and so on.

As a host, or blogger, if you don't want to hear ridiculous trade proposals, ask your audience to stop sending them. Berating them doesn't help anyone.

Will this article stop the masses from suggesting Nick Schultz, Omark, and a 7th for Shea Weber...HELL NO.

Then why post it?

And I will agree, my sense of humor is generally more in tuned with things that are funny. Maybe thats the problem.

tell you what, fellow commentors, lets redact every comment I've made thus far, and just assume every finger that has hit a key from the desk of Pajamah just reads the following...

"Hmmm, this wasn't funny at all"

Futurama, Cyanide and Happiness, Monty Python, the Far Side....these things are funny.

This missed the mark, badly.

If I keep this up, I'll end up with DSF-like infamy.

Comments are a discussion people. You don't need to like what I have to say, the same way I don't have to like what Gregor wrote.

Generally, I love reading the articles here and at lowetide.ca, most times only adding what I think is neccessary to the conversation.

There is nothing wrong with disagreeing in a civil manner.

Normally, I enjoy Gregors work, doesn't mean i have to like it all.

This guy is great!! A new and perfectly acceptable aquisition to play on a line with with DSF and NAS. The only thing missing on the site is a negative props button - Pajamah would be giving DSF a real run for his records.

How is that any different than people telling me I am wrong "because it is infact funny"

You say potatoe, is say potato.

When I say that is the problem, is maybe myself, and others here, argued too much about how it is insulting to fans. that might not be the lynch pin of deconstructing why I didn't like the article.

After this comment, I will back-off and hopefully like the rest of the commenters here, just go back to enjoying the substance of the site, including some of the great comments.

Nah, I don't track the Canucks, or keep a running tab of Kyle Wellwood stats.

Just trying to give everyone food for thought.

If everyone here enjoys the article, and I don't, then I'm not afraid to admit I was wrong. Maybe it was hilarious and I don't get it.

Trading for players by mortgaging your future is a zero sum game.........it may help you in the present but weighed against the future, it's a very risky gamble.

I think it was Strudwick interviewing Al Coates of Edmonton Trapper fame, and he asked about winning teams, and the ability to draft/trade your way to a championship.

Coates basically said unless you're the Yankees, its very hard to trade or buy your way to a title.

You need to draft well, and develop even better. Oilers well on there way on the drafting side (drafted very well if you include the #1's)

Now they need Pitlicks', Martindales', and Marincins' to turn into NHL players

If Poile would take Ebs, JSchultz, a couple of prosepcts, and the 2014 1st rounder for Weber then MacT should sign and submit the paperwork. Ebs is a great winger, but Yakupov can take his place. JSChultz will become a very good offensive d-man, but will top out at a level below Weber at best. There is no guarantee the prospects and draft pick turn out in the end.

Adding Weber would have the same effect that Pronger did not that long ago, and he is locked up long term. If MacT would not have to sacrifice Hall, Yak or RNH as well then he should do a deal like this. As much as I like him, Ebs is likely the most expendable of the big 4 up front, and I doubt that Poile wants another high flying Russian forward for a bit. LOL

Agreed, but then you need Hemsky to stay

Yak can jump to 1RW, Hemsky can play with Gagner and Perron.

If its Ebs, JSchultz, and 2014 1st, can you get Weber and one of their bottom 6?

Has anyone ever tried NHL 13 to see what it would take to trade for Weber?

I would guess that it would have to be Eberle, J. Schultz & a first-rounder at minimum. Then you could change the settings, and play just your top five of:

Hall, Nuge, Yak, Weber, Ference

That's about the only way this trade works. On NHL 13. If I'm the owner of the Preds, and I just paid $27 million for 48 games, I'm not trading Weber. Ever.

Gregor should just make an article about NHL 13 trades, then people can talk about crazy trades they were able to make. Seems like there's an interest in the topic, but then it hopefully bottles up the crazy suggestions to the NHL 13 articles.

I wish. Those girls are gorgeous.

I'm in the woodworking industry. Very lacking of anything resembling pretty.

Plenty of 56 yr old croatian guys missing 2 or more digits and 8 or more teeth though.

You editting son of a &%$%

The average EVGA is 2.33/60 the Average Special team G rate is 6.00 PPGF/60 and 6.00 PKGA/60.

People talk about the minutes a players eats up. Weber is a big minutes eater. he played 24.85 minutes a night.

I allways ask are they good minutes or bad minutes. there is 48 even minutes 6 pp minute 6 pk minutes

for three even d pairs that is 16 min per.

Weber Even; 19.4 min/gm +3.4Min .064 comp 19th hardest in league (1st comp) 0.72 EVP/60 65th best 2.24 EVGA/60 (+2G) better than average for year

PK 1.88 min/gm 10.64 GA/60 worst in league (-12G)

PP 3.57 min/gm 4.2 PPPT/60 24th best in league 6.65 PPGF/60 (+3G)

Weber Did eat alot of minutes versus 1st comp. The desire is to get a D pair that can break even or beter 1st comp.to alow the rest of team to kill lower comp. weber was part of the 5th best tough comp even dpair in the Game.

Weber was the worst dman in the game on PK and cost his team 12 goals to average. you cannot make up for that kind of bad. he should not get any minutes on PK. Weber was +3g to average in the PP.

So relative to average performance he was -7 this year. Should have played 19.4 Even and 3.57 min PP with zero PK and he would have been +5. for 7.8M. though he would lokly only got 2nd unit minutes cause shultz is better on PP.

Jeff petry; Even 17.3 min/gm +1.1Min .038 comp 34th hardestin league (1st comp) 0.84EVP/60 43rd best 2.26 EVGA/60 (+2G) better than average for year he was on the third best even Dpair in the Game.

PK 3.26 min/gm 4.22 GA/60 17th best in league. (+8G)

He was a 20.56 min a night Dman facing the other teams best offence every night. pk minutes ar alot tougher than pp minutes.

So as as a Gm managing a cap. do you bring in weber at 7.8M to have equal results facing first comp and 1st/2nd unit minutes and no PK.

or do you stay with Petry who get s us +3G more for the year at 6.1M less against the cap.

Weber Even very good minutes Pk very bad minutes Pp slightly above Average. (-7)

Petry; even very good minutes. PK very good minutes. (+10)

This is why I love the Bear........I have the attention span of a knat.....so I can really only comprehend every other sentence on the first read through......but when I'm done, I always feel like I know something I didn't know before.

Another thing about RTBs stuff is that ...a lot of it flys in the face of convention...or popular thought .....which is very cool....AND...it looks like a lot of work...so I appreciate that part too....

I totally forgot to use them for my first 18 comments on this thread, and you can see the trouble it got me in.

Now you are trying to say you whine/rant was sarcasm? Don't backtrack you look like a fraud. You were offended, and the only one I saw, which is fine, but don't pretend that it was sarcasm.

Man have you completely missed the boat on this one. The point, which is always funny, is that it is normal for fans to over value the players on their team as well as make the assumption that it is easy to make a trade for anyone you need.

I feel sorry for anyone who had their feelings hurt by this article because cause they must get offended hundreds of times a day in everyday life and that must be hell!

You're right.

I missed the boat on this article 100%.

Already owned up to it, I think 3 times now. My opinion is in the vast minority. Sucks to be me.

Wasn't offended, just didn't find it gut-busting........not going to get bent out of shape over it.

People seem pretty anxious to find another poster to hate. We should leave Pajamah alone, he's not the hero we need right now.

DSF is.

So we'll hate him. Because he can take it. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A dark knight...

Thank you, disembodied head of Ralph Krueger.

I've been posting here for probably 3 years now, and this is more hate than I've recieved combined in that time.

Either you die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain.

@Pajamah

Man if Gregor does indeed get paid per comment he owes you some commission lol. I think page hits would make the most sense though

You have been a good sport about everything. Many would disappear with all the attention you are getting. Though that deserved a mention.
