NIGHTS WITH NAIL, VOLUME ONE

Lowetide
August 30 2013 07:26PM

The game was framed as a chance to recover from a disastrous outing against San Jose, which featured a 6-1 first period for the Sharks in the lid lifter at Rexall. The game against LA featured everything--addled calls from the zebra's, screw jobs from the zebra's, astouding stupidity and breathtaking brilliance.

Mike Johnson told the audience that attention to detail, taking care of the defense and a "full 60 minutes" were key for the Oilers. Take care of those things and the result will take care of itself. The Los Angeles Kings were touted as a team with size who could hit everything that moved--big, heavy and mean. Oiler fans will recognize these Coles notes, they've been around forever and were certainly a part of the pre-game chatter that night.

THE PENALTIES

They came early and often, and most were unusual on the night of January 24, 2013. The NHL always has their wonky penalties early in a season, but this night they were bringing out the back pages of the rulebook to penalize the copper and orange:

  • 7:09 1st period Ladislav Smid (smothering puck) This became the newest crazy rule in the game, where refs were asked to make a decision about whether the player slapped the puck or smothered it from several miles away. Incredible.
  • 9:54 1st period Ladislav Smid (instigator: face shield) This is designed to protect players from injury, and I agree with it. However, on a night where everything was called, this was a pretty cheap one. He received a double minor on the play (2 penalties for instigator).
  • 3:54 2nd period Teemu Hartikainen (faceoff violation). Yeah, well. I hate this rule.

GOALS CALLED OFF

With about 4 minutes left in the first period, the Oilers scored (Yakupov) but it was disallowed because the ref lost sight of it. The puck was clear as day, but the officials were having a bad night and since I'm going to rip them for another goal called off I'll pass on this one.

Late in the third period, the Oilers got a powerplay and were making things happen. The puck was moving around the LAK zone smartly, and despite some effective work from the Kings, Edmonton was putting together effective 5x4 play. With 1:16 to play Taylor Hall entered offensive zone with the puck just out of his reach, gained possession and seconds later RNH potted a goal to tie the game 1-1. Jonathan Quick protested the call, but the official pointed to the net, signifying it was a good goal.

Except.

EXCEPT Sam Gagner was tied up with Jonathan Quick and the officials called the goal off. There was NO way Gagner could have released from the pile, and calling the goal off was absolutely the wrong call. Remember, this was after a noxious loss to San Jose and the young Oilers--trying to make amends for the SJS game--were absolutely pissed when the goal was disallowed.

The fans? Well. One of the great things about being an Oiler fan is we're good at, how do I say this, expressing ourselves. With beer, with Boston Pizza boxes, with a chant that goes "BULL-XXXX" and a shower of boos.

All deserved. What a crummy, crummy job of officiating on this night.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

Nail happened! With just 4.7 seconds left, the young Russian from their hinterland bonded with a city halfway across the world, and a love affair was born. Yak City. Celly. Don Cherry may not have liked it, but Oiler fans absolutely exploded when this happened:

Music! And a night to remember.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

In an instant, Edmonton became Yak City and adrenaline filled fans screamed from Rexall, their homes, in cars and on the LRT. It was magic.

We're going to have more 'Nights with Nail' but I'll never forget this one. Early in the game he looked dangerous, but all of the penalties and silliness of the game meant there was very little consistency for either team. A late, late goal (4.7 seconds) tied it and they won it in overtime.

Rexall that night was 2006 spring. I pray to baby Jesus we have many more nights like that one this winter.

Thanks for that LT. That goal at that time in that game is the reason I love this game so much. Drama, excitement, and sweet sweet justice all in one shining moment! I love that kid. Can't wait to see what he does this season.

I've been re-watching pvr'd games this month and noticing anew the magic between Yak and Hall. There's our weapon of mass destruction to pull out when the game is on the line. Heavy danger!

We are all looking forward to more of this player, and this excitement.

The goal was significant on that night and in Yak's career.

Yak City. The Oilers of the early days delivered nights like this in the same cardiac gripping way. On those nights our heroes were named Messier Gretzky and BJ McDonald. It was gripping stuff.

As we all know the team went from those early 3-2 wins onto those crushing 10-2 wins. It took time and patience. The key was skill and speed.Which we have now in spades.

I suggested last season that we needed some ugly step sisters to go along with our Cinderella's. I still think we have a ways to go in our bottom six. Ryan Smyth God Bless him, is exactly what we need. But we need the younger version of him. The 2006 version.

As much as I like Ales Hemsky his role will have to change and I don't think its within him to accept that change. Its a matter of time before he moves on. Not if but when. I would like the Oilers to carry at least one nuclear threat for the first part of the season. I think that we need a guy who can throw the bombs to give the Halls and Yaks a little mental buffer zone early in the season. Just knowing we have a guy would be the key to ensuring some of those shots our guys have been taking don't happen or are reduced.

This is the year where we should running 3 lines. The 4th line should be a thug, a PK/faceoff specialist and a PP/energy guy. I really believe that we need to let the horses out of the barn early on this season. Eakins speaks of fitness and coming in to camp and competing at a high level. Let Hall etal loose. Release the dogs of war. Give them the ice time. At 21 Hall should be chewing up 20-22 minutes a night. Especially early on in the season. Justin Shultz? 22-25 minutes a night.

As far as line matching goes. Let the other coach pick his poison. If I am picking my team this year. Omark is on my fourth line. He is my left side PP guy on the half board. The guy may not be able to check his hat but god love him he can pass like nobody's grandmother can. With Yak lined up on the right side Omark's ability to make that pass should pay huge dividends. For the Omark haters I am saying that he can be an effective player in a reduced role and he has the skill to compliment any of the top 6 when needed(injury, penalties, flu bug). Currently we have no one else of his skill level that can fill that role. If so tell me who he is? Lander? Not close. Arcobello? Close.

It will Yak City and Hall all day long. My money says Hall gets 95 points this season. Yak gets 37 goals/62 points. Ebs gets 30 goal/80 points. RNH gets 15 goals and 55 assists. Perron 45 points. 18 goals. Gagner get 70 points. 25 goals. Justin Shultz gets 17 goals and 35 assists.

DD GAA will be 2.80 and his save percentage will be .922.

Yeah, I propped this comment. If it wasn't for DSF we'd all have our heads so far in the clouds, that when we lost our first game, traffic on the highlevel would double... Someone has to play the spoiler otherwise we'd all be sitting around like a shipment of Wanye limited edition bubbleheads. So here's to you DSF! In a 48 game season, there are no meaningless games. compounded to that fact is the fact that it was just after a tough loss, the fact that these were the Stanley Cup Champions, and that it was a physical mismatch that would test the young Oilers.

With these facts in mind it is overwhelmingly clear that it was greatly important to the Oilers season. Had it been a full season, with this game being game #79, against an Eastern Conference team, after already being mathematically eliminated from playoff contention... only then could I agree with the label "inconsequential".

Obviously it was meaningless.

The Oilers finished 10 points out of the playoffs.

In an 82 game season, that number would likely have been about 20 points.

Had the pleasure of being at that game. I got hit by a lot of beer and what not, but I absolutely did not mind one bit. The refs deserved to know just how much they screwed up that game. Thankfully, in the end, the hockey gods corrected the game.

I tend to give refs a lot of rope when I'm at a game, and I roll my eyes a lot when fans boo at the dumbest of things, but I'd like to think that it was all warranted that night. What an emotional roller coaster! Single-handedly the worst 59 minutes and best minute + OT I'd seen all year.

Anyone watching that game on TV or live felt the emotion. It wasn't an important game by any means, but it was such a high level of frustration that when Yakupov potted that goal everyone erupted. I wanted to jump on the ice and mug a ref at one point, so I don't blame Yakupov for scootin' down the ice. Much worse could have happened. And well, the Kings were whining and crying a lot that game. Not just after Nail's celebration.

I was supposed to be at that game but the boss changed his mind the day before about giving me the day off, I watched the first half of it at home thinking "Well, the refs sucked the life right outta this one, it's not so bad to miss." When I woke up the next day to watch the highlights I have to admit there was a fair amount of cursing going on. Here's to a few more memorable moments this season.

Not to harp on old wounds, but this is an understatement. Iirc, he got 4 + 5 + 10 all on that one fight. We saw Smid briefly in that first period.. then sometime in the middle of the 2nd period we got to see him again.

Personally, I'm a big fan of fighting and at one point I was for the inst /w visor rule, but now I find the league is very hypocritical when it comes to this rule and it's a dinosaur rule (even though it isn't that old) that really should be changed. NHL's message: We want to keep you safe, but some guy's fist is more important than your head? Right.

(fyi, I'm alluding to the fact that it's OK for someone to take the helmet off first before fighting, putting them at risk of hitting their head on the ice).

Perhaps most astounding about that night was the NHL using those refs again... in a future capacity that didn't involve greeting people at WalMart.

One of the best moment of the year was the look on those buffoons faces when chaos reigned and it was directed squarely at their incompetent selves. They were gagging on their own air and I enjoyed it immensely.
