HEARTBREAKS AND NEW LIFE (GAGNER BROKEN JAW)

Sam Gagner's broken jaw added to RNH's recovery puts the Oilers in a big hole. How does this week look now? Click through and see.

TRANSACTIONS BEFORE THE GAGNER INJURY

I thought the Oilers might IR Corey Potter, Denis Grebeshkov and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to start things, and then go into full cut down mode:

  • Return Darnell Nurse and Jujhar Khaira to their junior teams.
  • Demote to OKC G Richard Bachman.
  • Sign G Ty Rimmer and send him to Barons camp.
  • Send down Oscar Klefbom, Martin Marincin, Brad Hunt and Taylor Fedun.
  • Send down Anton Lander, Mark Arcobello, Andrew Miller, Ryan Martindale, Linus Omark, Curtis Hamilton and Tyler Pitlick.

OPENING NIGHT 23 MAN ROSTER AFTER THE GAGNER INJURY

  • Goal (2): Devan Dubnyk and Jason LaBarberta
  • Defense (7): Jeff Petry, Ladislav Smid, Andrew Ference, Justin Schultz, Nick Schultz, Anton Belov, Phil Larsen
  • Center (4): Taylor Hall, Mark Arcobello, Boyd Gordon, Will Acton, Anton Lander
  • Left Wing (5): David Perron, Jesse Joensuu, Ryan Smyth, Ryan Hamilton, Ben Eager
  • Right Wing (5): Jordan Eberle, Ales Hemsky, Nail Yakupov, Ryan Jones, Mike Brown

After the Gagner injury, I think Arcobello and Lander may make the team. There's no Gagner replacement out there and the Oilers top center is also on the shelf. This is a massive item for the Edmonton Oilers season. I would guess this could be bad news for Ben Eager, Ryan Hamilton or Ryan Jones. Ryan Smyth may be asked to play center.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

It's a bitter bitter pill. Wow.

Terrible news for Sam and the team. Hopefully they can find a way to pull through until RNH comes back. I thought Hall's comment was fitting that if you're swinging your stick around that carelessly, it's totally your fault. McKenzie is saying that the league is going to look at both the Kassian play and the Weiss play on Hall, but nothing definitive about hearings.

Nice to see Eakin and MacT taking the night off during a game to hobknob with Katz and family in his private box! Whats that all about.?

Bit of Gong show if you ask me. Always dangerous when the owner gets that close to hockey operations.

Can anyone name Chicago's top two centers? Toews and ??? Handzus? Take them out of the lineup and Chicago's top four centers are Marcus Kruger, Andrew Shaw, Drew Leblanc and a raw rookie. If Boston were to lose Krejci and Bergeron their top four centers would be Peverley, Chris Kelly, Greg Campbell and Ryan Spooner. Is Hall, Arcobello, Gordon, Acton really much worse than that? Bottom line is ANY team losing their top two centers is in a world of hurt.

And not to be negative, but if the Oil can't overcome this then they were never a playoff team anyways. Way better players get hurt all the time. Pittsburgh still makes it in when the best player in the world goes down. If we lose our season over an extended injury to Sam, then well.....

That's a fair comment but the Oilers are now down their top 2 centers. That would be like Crosby and Malkin both being gone at the same time. Pittsburgh would be in big trouble if that happened to them. Depth at center was going be a challenge for the Oilers this year period. Now we have a big hole. I just hope the Oilers solve the problem by bringing in a real center (via draft, UFA - doesn't matter). The other centers we have in the organization can't fill the #2 spot Gagner had.

Yes he is but, obviously drafting a centre in the first round every 5 years is not enough.

Might be time to explore what it would take to pry Paul Statsny out of Colorado.

Colorado is loaded at C.

Given the cap situation, any deal would likely have to involve Hemsky and I would imagine the AVs would want an actual NHL D as part of the trade.

Hemsky and Schultz Sr for Statsny plus parts (to square up the dollars) would make a world of sense. I love Hemsky, but damn he's look good on a line with McKinnon and Landeskog. (AV's are really the NHL's next scariest young team of the future)

The question is when does Statsny's contract run out, cause that was an ugly motha?

Fair enough. Either way I expect Gagner back faster than Nuge still. We would be looking at 4-6 games with that kind of line setup.

Who knows. He could be back near the beginning of the season. I guess it really depends upon the break, the ability to play with the shield, and pain tolerance. Crosby was kept out till the felt he was needed.

I don't hate Omark but not a fan of him neither. He hang on to the puck for too long and slow down the offense.

I hope he stop being a solo player and work with his linemates more and move the puck faster. I'll rather watch him pass the puck to his linemates early to avoid protecting the puck along the board.

Four things...

One, maybe you're right, maybe McIntyre wasn't the right guy

Two, its not a zero sum game.....it may well have deterred them......perhaps it would have been worse had he not been there..

Three, you'd rather be the guy/team getting run over as opposed to the guy/team doing the running over?

And Four, and I've said it before, you can't statistic your way to a Stanley Cup....it's a game of emotion...fear, courage, elation, rage, etc....and when some Canuck like Kassian takes Gagner out of the lineup for two months, or elbows Hall in the head and concusses him, or knees RNH and blows his knee out, I don't care what the league does....I want to smash his face in or see one of my teammates smash his face in.....It makes me feel better....so sue me.

If McIntyre is not the right guy, who can be the right guy?

If you have an enforcer like McIntyre in your line up and other teams still run your star players, what have you accomplished with the enforcer? How does it help our team to win the Stanley cup? In the last 5 years, which Stanley Cup winners have an enforcer in their roster?

What good does it do if we smash Kassian face or Wiese face? Why don't we run their star players like the Sedins? He took one of our stars out, we will take two of theirs out. And we can do it even with our 3rd/4th liners or even call up from the minors. Why do we need an enforcer to beat their pest?

If all the enforcer can do is beat the hell out of their pest (and I doubt you can sucker punch him without getting suspended if he hides behind the referees), but couldn't stop them from running our star players, who good does it do? Are you going to trade our star players for their pest players?

And what happen after our enforcer get suspended? Open season for all teams to run our star players?

We knew going in that we are very thin at centre. This obviously doesn't help. I think I would rather see Eberle in the middle for a short while Gagner recovers than Arcobello make the team. Arcobello seems like a tweener to me. If there is one plus to the injuries to RNH and Gagner is that it forced the coaching staff to move Hall to the middle. Most successful teams are built up the middle and having our best player play centre could drastically change the outlook of this team going forward if Hall succeeds there.

Tortorella dressed all his goonies for a preseason game ...knowing full well that the Oilers play skilled players only.Shows you what class this coach has... none.

Not any different than Scott showboating against the Leafs.. Why are these guys even on the ice at this time of the year... more bush league stuff from the NHL.

Worked well so far hasn't it?

Bring them into a league when they are kids playing with men and complain when they get hurt.

Well we know what Shero would do if he were down them both don't we? I've liked everything MacT has done this summer except not addressing this. Hindsight is always 20/20 but in this case it's even worse. RNH has spent the summer injured and Sam was in a contract dispute, MacT had better have some embers still warm from some conversations he better have had this summer.

Center? Opportunity missed imo.

BPA is nothing more than an opinion and often the results don't match that opinion.

While the 3 players you mention are all fine young hockey players, if the decision is close you should draft the centre.

Perhaps even more to the point, drafting a D in the top 10 is foolish unless the players is a slam dunk franchise defenseman who can make an impact very quickly.

Alex Galchenyuk would look pretty good in an Oilers jersey right about now.

Don't see any reason to feel our hand is forced in pulling off a big trade.

The Oilers needed a Center long before this.

A broken jaw is like any broken bone, atleast 6 weeks just to heal plus whatever time needed to be ready for contact. Gagner may not be back until mid december. I do think another proven bottom 2 center would of been nice, but making a big trade for a top 2 as DSF suggested is unneeded.

I am also interested to see how they will do without a proven 4th line center. Maybe we are all wrong. Maybe by sending Hall, Nuge, and Gagner to take some extra shifts on the bottom lines everything will work out......I'm not sure, all I am saying is its too early to panic.

The trade he suggested is a fine one that makes logical sense. Both teams trade from a position of strength to make themselves better.

RNH is not back for a few games, Hall's outta position, Gordon's your number two, and your 3/4 centers are tweeners. Gagner's gone for at least two maybe three weeks and will take 2 weeks to get acclimated to the speed and nuances of the NHL. Good luck with that coming outta the gates against the Sedins, Toews, Thorntons, Getzlafs, Kopitars and Richards, etc of the world.

Teams that often come outta the gate bad, don't make the show. I believe its like 70 percent of teams outta the playoffs by December stay out, so if you believe ground can be made up like the Anaheim Duck's (a veteran team) a couple years back then believe what you want. A big trade is not likely to happen. Getting Statsny would not be a bad fix, but a small trade would make a lot of sense.

Oh boy...a Stastny acquisition would certainly be interesting...especially if we were able to resign him on a reasonable contract after this season.

It would instantly transform our depth down the middle...especially when Nuge and Gags come back.

Lots of options at that point.

Hall Nuge Ebs, Perron Gags Yak, Joensuu Stastny Omark, Smyth/Eager, Gordon, Brown/Jones.

or

Perron Hall Ebs, Gagner Stastny Yak, Joensuu Gordon Omark, Smyth/Eager, Arco/Lander/STECKEL, Brown/Jones.

I especially love the second scenario if the Oilers were to nab a player like Steckel as the fourth line C.

I'd also love for the Oilers to maybe give Guillaume Latendresse a shot...he's got some fantastic offensive instincts and a big body...if he could come anywhere near that 25 goal form he had a few years back he would look awfully good as our 3LW and Joensuu as our 4LW.

He was by all accounts having a great PTO with the 'Yotes and was their leading preseason scorer before they let him go on Saturday. Worth a shot IMO...especially short term while we NEED Hall at C. He's also only 26 years old...could be a cheap reclamation project with low risk and perfect age to stay around with the cluster for awhile if he could stick.

Personally I much prefer a player that works his butt of for the team to win. A player that wants to make his teammates better to share the spotlight with them.A player that thinks of his teammates first.Like a 19 year old kid's first NHL game getting his first point setting you up.Like the hard work in the corner digging the puck out.On that particular goal I thought the pass was nicer then the shot.

As far as swagger goes here is and old line from Brain Kelly about scoring a touchdown. "When you get to the end zone act you have been there before."

Watched the game on the tube. I think Rimmer played a good game( 40 min. ) I think he looked confident, and he even played better than Jason (as a back-up to Devan). Jason let in a goal through his five-hole, yet Rimmer let in the goal due to a give away! Also like Yak's dominance on ice, he should continue to improve as an oiler. One disappointment though: Smyth's giving away more than he would like to! Hopefully, he can turn it around before the real season starts! I think Hall looked a bit jitterish, maybe because Center's really more than he can handle?! Hope not, with Gagne out for bit,we need him to excel @ that position, Yesterday!
