HEARTBREAKS AND NEW LIFE (GAGNER BROKEN JAW)

Sam Gagner's broken jaw added to RNH's recovery puts the Oilers in a big hole. How does this week look now? Click through and see.

TRANSACTIONS BEFORE THE GAGNER INJURY

I thought the Oilers might IR Corey Potter, Denis Grebeshkov and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to start things, and then go into full cut down mode:

  • Return Darnell Nurse and Jujhar Khaira to their junior teams.
  • Demote to OKC G Richard Bachman.
  • Sign G Ty Rimmer and send him to Barons camp.
  • Send down Oscar Klefbom, Martin Marincin, Brad Hunt and Taylor Fedun.
  • Send down Anton Lander, Mark Arcobello, Andrew Miller, Ryan Martindale, Linus Omark, Curtis Hamilton and Tyler Pitlick.

OPENING NIGHT 23 MAN ROSTER AFTER THE GAGNER INJURY

  • Goal (2): Devan Dubnyk and Jason LaBarberta
  • Defense (7): Jeff Petry, Ladislav Smid, Andrew Ference, Justin Schultz, Nick Schultz, Anton Belov, Phil Larsen
  • Center (4): Taylor Hall, Mark Arcobello, Boyd Gordon, Will Acton, Anton Lander
  • Left Wing (5): David Perron, Jesse Joensuu, Ryan Smyth, Ryan Hamilton, Ben Eager
  • Right Wing (5): Jordan Eberle, Ales Hemsky, Nail Yakupov, Ryan Jones, Mike Brown

After the Gagner injury, I think Arcobello and Lander may make the team. There's no Gagner replacement out there and the Oilers top center is also on the shelf. This is a massive item for the Edmonton Oilers season. I would guess this could be bad news for Ben Eager, Ryan Hamilton or Ryan Jones. Ryan Smyth may be asked to play center.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

It's a bitter bitter pill. Wow.

Yes. I have been all along.

Since young players mature and develop at different rates, it's too early to decide which player will have the better career but I would expect Seguin will open a few eyes this season in Dallas.

BPA at the draft, I have no argument with Hall, Nuge Yak.

However, center has been a problem for a long time, as has defense. MacT addressed D by bringing in great depth.

Center? Opportunity missed imo.

BPA is nothing more than an opinion and often the results don't match that opinion.

While the 3 players you mention are all fine young hockey players, if the decision is close you should draft the centre.

Perhaps even more to the point, drafting a D in the top 10 is foolish unless the players is a slam dunk franchise defenseman who can make an impact very quickly.

Alex Galchenyuk would look pretty good in an Oilers jersey right about now.

Yes he is but, obviously drafting a centre in the first round every 5 years is not enough.

Might be time to explore what it would take to pry Paul Statsny out of Colorado.

Colorado is loaded at C.

Given the cap situation, any deal would likely have to involve Hemsky and I would imagine the AVs would want an actual NHL D as part of the trade.

I was iffy on the Oilers making the playoffs before, but getting outta the gate with Hall learning to play center, Gordon as your number 2, Lander, Hammy/Acton/Arco as your 3/4 is not exactly depth. Then add RNH coming in not up to speed until mid Nov.

MacT signed too many bloody dmen and ignored the ginormous hole at center. I doubt there was a contingency plan. If any centers got hurt, the Oilers will have two AHL tweeners carrying the 3-4 center positions. This team is built backasswards. MacT sounds good when he talks but his decisions thus far are questionable, and poorly thought out. Overpaying Ference, signing Garbagekov for what reason, releasing Rajala, extending RNH early, the second round 2 for 5 deal, firing yet another coach and lack of bottom six forwards especially centers. What I find scary is he almost pulled a Sather like "Gomezian" deal when he nearly signed Clarkson for 7 mil, because he doesn't get the market place and based decisions on his IQ pseudo intelligence. We have become the most disfunctional saga in NHL, replacing the Islanders. Never boring, but never winning.

Much longer ago than last summer.

While drafting all those wingers and, then, defensemen, other teams who are following the mantra of building down the middle, have been loading up on centres.

This is the first real test of our new coach. He sat up high and watched our young stars get butchered......lets see how he reacts......does he pull a Lowetide and keep/add Hamilton on the roster....or does he make some demands on his GM to get muscle added to the lineup?

Ben Eagre is not the answer....Ben Eagre has been seriously concussed and has no desire (and rightfully so) to risk another more serious head injury.

And all you pretty things out there that are counting on the league (Brendan Shanahan) to protect you after the fact are FRANKING CLUELESS....this is a man's game....either you step up or you get stepped on....you fight your own battles...so cut the intellectualizing and the whining that follows..".oh those other teams are so mean"...."oh the refs are so unfair"...."oh the league should do something".....CLUELESS FRANKING PANSIES!

I don't know what people trashed you on this. Its common in all levels of hockey, for the goal-scorer to acknowledge a great assist, with a point, skating over to them, hug, etc. Even more so since it was Khaira's first point in the league (I think). I am not calling for Yaks head, just that he really should of done it.

Okay, Ben Eager is not the answer. How about Steve McIntyre? Would he be scary enough to be the deterrent?

The Oilers injury report: 2009-10: 530 man games 2010-11: 281 man games 2011-12: 246 man games 2012-13: 118 man games (202 prorated for 82 games)

So we had McIntyre in 09-10 and 10-11, but we had more man games lost in those 2 years.

McIntyre KO the Flames enforcer Ivanans in game 1 but our young stars were still being run and finally Hall to fight Dorsett and end his season early. Isn't the same year that Raffi elbow Eberle at his head?

Can you explain why having McIntyre didn't stop the other teams from running our young stars?

I have seen Pest Cooke, Avery, Clutterbuck, etc running star players all these years and never have to fight an enforcer once.

After Nolan hit his teammate, Bissonnette jumped the bench to fight Nolan and got a game misconduct and 10 game suspension, let's see if this will stop the Kings from running their players. I really doubt it.

Four things...

One, maybe you're right, maybe McIntyre wasn't the right guy

Two, its not a zero sum game.....it may well have deterred them......perhaps it would have been worse had he not been there..

Three, you'd rather be the guy/team getting run over as opposed to the guy/team doing the running over?

And Four, and I've said it before, you can't statistic your way to a Stanley Cup....it's a game of emotion...fear, courage, elation, rage, etc....and when some Canuck like Kassian takes Gagner out of the lineup for two months, or elbows Hall in the head and concusses him, or knees RNH and blows his knee out, I don't care what the league does....I want to smash his face in or see one of my teammates smash his face in.....It makes me feel better....so sue me.

-Wish instead of twirling his stick and looking into the crowd Yak, would of gave some props to Khaira for his pass (I'm not faulting him , but would of been nice)

-hope it is only a hairline fracture and not a total break. With 10 days before the start of the season and Crosby missing only 13 games for a major break, maybe its only single digit games he will miss.

I think the NHL should institute the 'eye for an eye' rule. Whenever someone is hurt (intentional or not) due to the actions of another player, that player must sit out for the same period of time as the injured player (up to 1 year). We would see fewer 'accidents' like this if that were the case.

I have absolutely no problem with you disagreeing. The opposing opinions make the comment section tick.

Personally I much prefer a player that works his butt of for the team to win. A player that wants to make his teammates better to share the spotlight with them.A player that thinks of his teammates first.Like a 19 year old kid's first NHL game getting his first point setting you up.Like the hard work in the corner digging the puck out.On that particular goal I thought the pass was nicer then the shot.

As far as swagger goes here is and old line from Brain Kelly about scoring a touchdown. "When you get to the end zone act you have been there before."

Perron can play center too and would be a better option, but having two outta position centers in your top six is a mistake, and its not happening. From my understanding Eberle only played a bit of Center in Regina for the Pats.

Hall and Gordon will start the year as 1 and 2. My opinion is you put your too two lines together for games from now on, stop playing Smyth with Hall. Get Hall use to his linemates. He may be there for awhile.

I do think another proven bottom 2 center would of been nice, but making a big trade for a top 2 as DSF suggested is unneeded.

I am also interested to see how they will do without a proven 4th line center. Maybe we are all wrong. Maybe by sending Hall, Nuge, and Gagner to take some extra shifts on the bottom lines everything will work out......I'm not sure, all I am saying is its too early to panic.

The trade he suggested is a fine one that makes logical sense. Both teams trade from a position of strength to make themselves better.

RNH is not back for a few games, Hall's outta position, Gordon's your number two, and your 3/4 centers are tweeners. Gagner's gone for at least two maybe three weeks and will take 2 weeks to get acclimated to the speed and nuances of the NHL. Good luck with that coming outta the gates against the Sedins, Toews, Thorntons, Getzlafs, Kopitars and Richards, etc of the world.

Teams that often come outta the gate bad, don't make the show. I believe its like 70 percent of teams outta the playoffs by December stay out, so if you believe ground can be made up like the Anaheim Duck's (a veteran team) a couple years back then believe what you want. A big trade is not likely to happen. Getting Statsny would not be a bad fix, but a small trade would make a lot of sense.

He was with Boyd Gordon and Yakupov. all other buble boys were skating in fourth line configurations. Who know what is going to happen now with who stays and who goes. A broken jaw is like any broken bone, atleast 6 weeks just to heal plus whatever time needed to be ready for contact. Gagner may not be back until mid december. I think all bets are off at this point as to who stays.

Despite the reality that any retaliation for Kassian smashing Gagner would have come...wait for it...AFTER THE FACT.

What have they got to lose?

Only a playoff berth because MacT decided not to address the center deficiency.

Nor have they addressed what caused the deficiency...LOL
