DUBNYK TRADED TO PREDS... ACQUIRE SCRIVENS

Jason Gregor
January 15 2014 01:10PM

The Oilers have traded Devan Dubnyk to the Nashville Predators for centre/winger Matt Hendricks.

Hendricks is in the first of a four-year deal that pays him $1.85 million.

Dubnyk will be a UFA at the end of the season.

Hendricks is a 4th line guy who kills penalties.

He will be their 4th line centre, maybe winger, for the foreseeable future, so clearly the organization isn't that high on Anton Lander. Lander needs to improve his footspeed. I know some won't like Hendricks' contract, and that is fair, but if the cap keeps going up it won't look as bad as it does today. He doesn't bring any offence, however, so in two years it could look really bad. A gamble for sure.

He plays the 2nd most PK minutes of any Nashville forward, so expect him to play a lot on the PK here. The Preds PK is currently 13th.

Thoughts?

According to Bob McKenzie the Oilers have acquired Edmonton native Ben Scrivens from LA for a 3rd round pick as well.

So Hendricks and Scrivens for Dubnyk and a 3rd...

Thoughts?

Taken alone, I was surprised. Add in the Scrivener trade for a third rounder and we finally have a potential long term starter (fingers crossed) and a PK, defensive specialist. Cautious thumbs up on these deals.

In a way i hope Dubs getsd some actual coaching and can develop fairly quickly. That may be the tipping point for Katz to realize he has morons working for him...Although i highly doubt it.

I personally don't think Dubby will be great because he still doesnt move laterally that well and cant track the puck effectivly but if Nashville has actual coaches who can develop a player he may turn it around.

Heard a rumor that the Oilers are paying part of dubnyks salary. Is this true?

I saw that on CapGeek as well. Is that what the retained Salary means? Could it simply mean the amount of his salary that we have already paid prior to the trade?

Lander is what 22 and an RFA. Why does he need to be flushed? Everyone is always calling for the "Detroit model" let him keep rolling in the AHL where he is the Captain and is turning himself into a ppg player.

I have no issues with these trades. Clearing out salary and getting a defensive 4th line center that plays on the pk? Sounds like a smart move for a team that wont make the playoffs. It also makes Gagner expendable. Arc will continue to center the 2nd line. Gordon stays put and Smytty goes back to the wing on the third.

In order for a team to get better they do not have to win every trade. What they must do is be prepared to trade and then win the key trades. This is not a key trade but it is comforting to know we now have one more reliable forward with some size and grit and effort. I support MacT and wish him luck going forward. Patience and class Oiler fans.

SHUFFLING DECKCHAIRS

Ben Scrivens has decent career stats but you really have to wonder how he will look playing behind the Oilers defense.

Someone suggested Matt Hendricks will "add toughness". The following players were also brought in to "add toughness": MacIntyre, Hordichuck, Eager, Brown.

I cannot wait for the press conference where MacTavish is up there, all smug and smiling and happy, telling fans these are the "bold moves" he promised. Sorry folks. The Oilers are not an appreciably better team than they were yesterday.

I like these moves, i still wish they would've given Dubnyk a chance behind a legitimate top 6 d corps, but at least the price was right. I have liked Dubnyk since he got his first start here, but a change of scenery will be much needed not only for him but for us fans too.

I don't disagree however all the talk lately has been how Edmonton needs some better Dmen ... so we get a forward. Makes perfect sense to me.

Is the writing on the wall now for Gagner? Moved to wing and centre shored up so we won't miss him there. We don't really need him as a right winger either. Maybe MacT has something else in the works too.

Yes they are. Once you remove a bad option (Dubnyk) from the coaching staff and leave him with two plausible options, you've improved your team.

MacT does cover a lot of holes here. Don't expect a lot from Hendricks, but 4th liner with size, a lefty in the circle to complement Gordon. And he's experienced. The Oilers need more experience on the ice.

But my excitement is for Scrivens. I think a very good team can win with competent goaltending. Scrivens doesn't need to be a rockstar if the other pieces fall into place. But it'd be real nice if Scrivens continues to play like he did before he got hurt this year.

One can hope more to follow, but any team with a decent 1-2 D man available is likely in the playoff picture and won't give em up til the off season. They also know Edmonton is ripe for the picking. I am sure anyone entertaining offers is looking for something Mac T isn't prepared to give up.

holy wow would you look at that?!? at the very least someone is trying to win, wish the group on the ice ( you specifically worst DEFENCEMEN ever) would try the same.

i find myself watching most games saying to myself " just play your own damn position" these dmen just go where ever the hell they want and then when they get scored on you can almost see it in their faces... o ya, riiiight F*ck meeee. and then they press repeat. in my day if my d partner was all over my side i would use my words and communicate to him to piss off and worry about your sh*t the rest will take care of itself.

so, in conclusion, i like the trades, just hope a new dman is on the way as well, maybe one with 50..4..ok 300 games played.
