GDB 54.0: Longest Losing Streak of the Season?

Jonathan Willis
January 26 2014 11:54AM

Chicago. Dallas. Minnesota. Winnipeg. Vancouver. Phoenix. Six straight losses have the Oilers on the verge of their longest ineffective run of the season; only a win over Nashville can halt the trend.

The Road To The Olympics

The schedule softens a little bit after the Olympic break, which is a good thing for the Oilers because they haven’t done a very good job of handling the rough stretches. Take the current six-game losing streak, comprised of a four-game Western road trip and then a home game against Vancouver. The only ‘easy’ matchup was a home game against the non-playoff Coyotes, which the Oilers lost on Friday.

Today the Oilers play the Predators. Tomorrow they play in Vancouver, which based on recent history is a game they’re all but certain to lose (the last time a tired Oilers team played Vancouver they lost 4-0 and were out-shot 40-19). Then there’s a Wednesday game against San Jose, then a four-game road swing out East starting with the Boston that ends with back-to-back games in New York.

A failure tonight gives the Oilers a very good shot at 10 consecutive losses.

Lottery Standings!

Rank Team Pace
1 Edmonton Oilers 56
2 Buffalo Sabres 57 (71)
3 Calgary Flames 68
4 Florida Panthers 76
5 New York Islanders 76
6 Winnipeg Jets 82

Ugh.

Buffalo is on a 57-point pace for the season, but have improved to a 71-point pace under Ted Nolan. Calgary is on track to finish a dozen points ahead of the Oilers. And that is the total number of teams set to finish less than 20 points in front of Edmonton.

Predictions!

Game Day Prediction: The losing has to end at some point; let’s call it 3-1 in favour of Edmonton.

Obvious Game Day Prediction: Even though Devan Dubnyk is not expected to start, Louie DeBrusk will find a way to use the nickname ‘Big Easy’ at least once on the broadcast.

Not-So-Obvious Game Day Prediction: After winning the hardest shot competition yesterday, Luke Gazdic gets an opportunity on the man advantage and scores his first power play goal of the season.

I believe that Eakins does not see himself as the problem. I fairness to him he did teach us to " Chop Water, drink wood"! God knows what this team would look like if he did not replace the artwork, pictures, and layout of the dressing room?

With Eakins we have achieved many many milestones if you care to look? Think of it: better artwork in the dressing room; no more eating donuts; learning how to chop wood; learning how to drink water; better fitness; better haircuts. The list goes on and on.

We should realize that our best shot at Ekblad is Dallas Eakins. Remember that when you are watching Seth Jones take us apart.

MacT and Klowe don't see themselves as part of the problem either...

so far the only demonstrable skill eakins has is as an interior decorator...

If the reports of 6Rings requesting a "sabbatical" and being turned down are true, then the next honourable thing to do is to fall on his sword and resign. If he's in this for the best interests of the Oilers, then that would be the way to go. This guy can't possibly be unaware of the unrest directed towards him.

How he can go to the rink every day and hold his head up is beyond me.

DO THE RIGHT THING KEVIN LOWE. RESIGN. IF YOU TRULY HAVE THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE OILERS AT HEART, THERE IS ONLY ONE DECISION. BE A MAN AND MAKE THAT DECISION. YOU WILL GAIN FAR MORE RESPECT FOR DOING THAT THAN CONTINUING TO LEAD A ONCE PROUD ORGANIZATION AWAY FROM ANYTHING RESEMBLING MEDIOCRITY AND TOWARDS THE BOWELS OF INEPTITUDE.

Let's not forget that this is not the first implosion in the last eight years. MacT resigned and Klowe promoted himself to POHO to give himself cover and MacT essentially went to the mattresses before he was brought back in - quietly before being given the GM job.

This year is yet another implosion - an even bigger one. So far the FOKs and Katz are trying to buy more time by saying that KLowe is not involved in the day to day - despite all evidence and statements to the contrary and putting all of the responsibility on the recently appointed MacT.

A corrupt political or mafia organization would be hard-pressed to do a better job shirking blame/covering up the accountability trail.

...

I'm reminded of godfather 1:

Sonny corleone seizing the FBI agent's camera as he took pictures of car license plates - just like Katz banning cars with "fire lowe" license plates.

And Michael Corleone disappearing to Italy (and marrying some fine Sicilian a$$ played by Simonetta Stefanelli) after he shot the police Captain and the mobster and then coming back once the heat was off - just like MacT resigning and then reappearing as VPOHO.

By Lowe "offering" to step down I think it shows the strength of his convictions. NONE

If he was really sincere he wouldn't be asking if he should step down he should do it.

It's kind of like when the wife asks you if she looks fat in her jeans. You KNOW how to answer that. Lowe also knows that his BFF would never let him go.

The Oilers have set the precedent for how not to rebuild. They don't have goaltending, no up and comers either. The d is 3-4 years away from being regular nhlers. The way this is going, this team will be terrible for another 5-6 years. A major overhaul is needed everywhere.

But hey, remember what Katz said. Patience, fans. Yes, we're going to be every bit as bad as we were this year, for another 5-6 years minimum. But stay the course! No changes needed.

And don't worry, it's not like our few star players will have either 1) requested a trade out of town or 2) learned how to lose, and lose badly, and lose every night (what's winning?). Wait....actually, that's EXACTLY what happens if we stay the course for the future, even if the future arrives in a miraculous 4 years instead of 5-6

How many NHL teams would hire any of the Oilers management team or coaching staff if they became available today? I do not think Lowe would be able to get a management or POHO job with any other NHL team based on his his Oilers record these past 12 years, both Mactavish and Howson were available these past few years and no other team hired either one except the Oilers.Eakins may have been the favorite last year, but after this season, he will not be hired by another team for quite some time, Buchberger and Smith, have survived the firing of the 3 previous head coaches, they are untouchables with the oilers, they are in the same boat as Lowe, they cannot do anything wrong.I guess that saying, that its not what you know, but who you know, is all that matters with the Oilers and Katz.

I for one want to see Eakins get at least another year before declaring him a bust. Same reason a lot of people want to hold on to Yakupov. He's a rookie head coach, and he needs more experience, obviously.

And while some people believe Yakupov is not being put in a great position to succeed because of Eakins, the same could be said about MacT not putting Eakins in a position to succeed. The D corps is brutal. The goaltending was (and possibly still is) very poor. The forwards are too one-dimensional. But slowly the roster is being reshaped and I want to see what Eakins can do next year. He should have a better team, he'll have more experience, and the players will learn they can't just pass blame on to the HC.

The assistant coaches are another matter. They've been here for years. They had their fair shake at helping this team get better. But Eakins... I wanna see how he does with a full season under his belt.

That would be a lateral move, George Mcfee will be available if the caps miss the play-offs. Look at the difference for Bruce Boudreax with a team that was committed to playing as a team, they weren't even supposed to make the play-offs last year and are cup contenders this year, yeah but look at the horrible job he did with Cogliano who this team couldn't get out of here fast enough.

I truly would like to see some balls by the fans at the game tonight. We keep hearing about chants of fire this guy or fire this other guy. Everyone wears fake Oiler jerseys to the game ( I don't get that, especially if you are older than 12). Everyone flocks to the souvenirs. Lets see some real action tonight. I don't even need to see a jersey on the ice. I just don't want to hear "Go Oilers Go" because its meaningless. Even if we win tonight its still meaningless. Anyone who thinks there is hope for this current team is sadly mistaken. And BOLD MOVES...I don't think firing the coaching staff is a bold move...its just a necessary move.

Actually if you follow the games shift by shift there are signs of improvement. It hasn't resulted in wins but slowly the decision making process of a number of players is very much coming around. Last season the top line was only effective off the rush which is a feast or famine way to go about offense. Especially against nhl caliber dmen. This season they are learning (from leprechauns under the arena I imagine since the coach is "incompetent") to dump the puck and then retrieve it and engage in a cycle game. This has resulted in more time spent in the offensive zone and more scoring chances. Yakupov has been skating much better without the puck and now needs to learn how to achieve better body position so he can retrieve and hang on to it. I'm sure the leprechauns will get to that ASAP. Petry has been more physical and has made a more concerted effort to shoot the puck. His defensive thought patterns are still a step behind but that will come. The leprechauns will see to it. Then again maybe you are on to something with this Jesus fellow of whom you speak. Maybe he can save us from the incompetent Mr. Eakins.

NOBODY ELSE WOULD HIRE ANY OF THESE JACKASSES AND THE LOCAL PRESS IS AFRAID TO SAY SO

I totally agree with this. When MacTavish was fired the first time (he should have stayed fired) I phoned a phone in show to say I didn't think he was that smart. It was like I committed BLASPHEMY. You all remember this. EVERY REPORTER in this city told us that MacTavish was a genius and he would get another HC job in the NHL in five minutes. Did not happen. It has almost nothing to do with his age. Numerous NHL HC's are the same age as MacTavish or within 2 years. His failure to get another job speaks volumes about his incompetence.

For many years the so-called sporting press in Edmonton has treated the Oilers glory boys like holy cows. They pelt them with cream puffs and whip them with wet noodles. When someone dares to ask a couple of hard questions (eg. MacKinnon, Rishaug, Spector), they are treated like a traitor.

I don't want to be melodramatic, but it is kind of disgraceful. The ESSENCE of good journalism is asking difficult questions. In the last five years, the Oilers are not just the worst team in the NHL. They are objectively the WORST AMOUNG THE 120 OR SO MAJOR LEAGUE NORTH AMERICAN TEAMS (ie. NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB). In my opinion the local press (with exceptions) has reacted to this situation with incredible COMPLACENCY.

PS I want to be completely fair. Arguably the Houston Astros are as bad as the Oilers over the last five years. But the comparison is unfair, because in MLB the is no HARD salary cap and no floor, and many other teams spend MULTIPLES of the Houston payroll.

So in the last five years, the Oilers are second last amoung 120. It is INCREDIBLE what a mess the Oilers are, top to bottom.
