GDB 54.0: Longest Losing Streak of the Season?

Jonathan Willis
January 26 2014 11:54AM

Chicago. Dallas. Minnesota. Winnipeg. Vancouver. Phoenix. Six straight losses have the Oilers on the verge of their longest ineffective run of the season; only a win over Nashville can halt the trend.

The Road To The Olympics

The schedule softens a little bit after the Olympic break, which is a good thing for the Oilers because they haven’t done a very good job of handling the rough stretches. Take the current six-game losing streak, comprised of a four-game Western road trip and then a home game against Vancouver. The only ‘easy’ matchup was a home game against the non-playoff Coyotes, which the Oilers lost on Friday.

Today the Oilers play the Predators. Tomorrow they play in Vancouver, which based on recent history is a game they’re all but certain to lose (the last time a tired Oilers team played Vancouver they lost 4-0 and were out-shot 40-19). Then there’s a Wednesday game against San Jose, then a four-game road swing out East starting with the Boston that ends with back-to-back games in New York.

A failure tonight gives the Oilers a very good shot at 10 consecutive losses.

Lottery Standings!

Rank Team Pace
1 Edmonton Oilers 56
2 Buffalo Sabres 57 (71)
3 Calgary Flames 68
4 Florida Panthers 76
5 New York Islanders 76
6 Winnipeg Jets 82

Ugh.

Buffalo is on a 57-point pace for the season, but have improved to a 71-point pace under Ted Nolan. Calgary is on track to finish a dozen points ahead of the Oilers. And that is the total number of teams set to finish less than 20 points in front of Edmonton.

Predictions!

Game Day Prediction: The losing has to end at some point; let’s call it 3-1 in favour of Edmonton.

Obvious Game Day Prediction: Even though Devan Dubnyk is not expected to start, Louie DeBrusk will find a way to use the nickname ‘Big Easy’ at least once on the broadcast.

Not-So-Obvious Game Day Prediction: After winning the hardest shot competition yesterday, Luke Gazdic gets an opportunity on the man advantage and scores his first power play goal of the season.

Impressed with the hockey sense of Marincin tonight, kid looks like a keeper. Put 20-30 pounds on him and a few years experience and he could be a solid NHL'er. The olympic experience will be great for him!

To think I got 22 trashes for posting this Jan. 29 on lowetides blog.

NHL rule:

A player who has lost or broken his stick may only receive a stick at his own players’ bench or be handed one from a teammate on the ice. A player will be penalized if he throws, tosses, slides or shoots a stick to teammate on the ice. A player may not participate in the play using a goalkeeper’s stick. A minor penalty shall be imposed for an infraction of this rule.

It's bad!! This team is still crap. Even crap wins once in a while. Listen to the fans at the game...they think they're watching the greatest time in the history of the NHL. They must have given out Kool-ade before the game. We should still fire the coaching staff...tonight. It's amazing how one game distorts the truth!!

I can't believe a 21 year old rookie with less than 15 game in the league is the only defence man that under pressure in his own zone I don't cringe and my first thought isn't how's this turnover going to end up in the net!

Oiler Domination To Follow

Oilers have 1 defenseman, 0 goalies signed for next year.

Oilers have 34+ million in cap space next year.

If there was ever a chance to fix the oilers back end - its next year.

This will be one of the biggest offseasons in oilers history, hopefully MacT is up for the challenge. Its unlikely any ufa will sign here - MacTs best bet is tsking salary off teams who can actually attract ufas- aka the perron trade.

Oiler Domination To Follow

Personally I think Macs done a good job in his first year.

Anyone is better than Steady Steve.

Larsson>Horcoff(miracle trade) Perron>Paajarvi(trade of the decade) Hendricks>Dubnyk(preds were duped) Brossoit>Smid(bag of pucks>smid) Scrivens>3rd rounder(great backup with potential)

MacT has 34+ mil in cap space next year- hoping he keeps fixing this great pile of mess he inherited.

J Shultz, Ekblad, Nurse, Klefbom, Marincin - one day good be the makings of a solid defense there.

Not much to complain about tonight. Marincin with a bad pinch, Scrivens with a bad goal - that's about it. I always hear how the 4th line can't win you games, but man they sure set the tone tonight. Maybe Jones' comment after last game had some effect?

That’s the best d-zone coverage I've seen this year.

Another win against a bottom six team.

A team that is scoring impaired; was playing their third road game in four days (did/does the oil have a similar scheduling knot this year?); third string goalie; weber was invisible - touch if the flu perhaps?

It's a win but it certainly does not break any trends or set any new achievement.

Most definitely good. Don't listen to the haters! The game of hockey is an art form and it takes time to perfect it. In order to be consistent you have to build good habits and that can't just be turned on like a switch. There IS progress with these guys and there will be more going forward. Is this team flawed? Absolutely. Do they need to make some roster changes? Of course. But this team is not nearly as bad as some would have us believe. Same goes for the management and coaching staff. To believe that this management group is incompetent or tanking the team on purpose or whatever asinine crap the haters can dream up is ridiculous. This version of the oilers started with the hiring of MacT and then Eakins and they deserve a fair shake at bringing this team around. Enjoy the win boys cuz there's still a long road ahead. But steps are being taken in the right direction and I choose to believe that the best is yet to come.

A wise man once told me to never critique a win but...

The 1st 15 minutes of the 3rd period looked like a fire drill. I counted no less than 10 simple plays to get the puck out of their zone that were totally flubbed. I agree with a previous poster that the 21 year old rookie was the most composed d-man we have is our own zone.

I hope Smitty breaks the PP record on home before the end of the year.

The 4th line was excellent.

Its funny what simple dump, chase and grinding down low can do for a team huh? Simple get shots to the net have a screen and some grinding down low by the bottom two lines won this game. Sloppy defense is what keeps us getting hammered by the opposition.

No argument, but I don't think the Preds had one good scoring chance despite all the zone possession, so at least our coverage was on.

But yeah that Potter/Belov pairing could never really get a handle on the puck. Belov in particular looked outmatched.

I mean up 3 goals I don't really care who has the puck as long as we're limiting the chances...

The weirdest feeling I was missing from this game was the fear I usually had when Dubnyk was playing and the Oil had a 3-4 goal lead, as I always felt like it will just be one bad goal to open the Dubnyk gate and we would be lucky to get a loser point.

Scrivens played quite well and you can't go wrong with 36 saves and a .971 save percentage for the game. Hendricks also put up 15 minutes and 2 shots on net, I'll take that as well.

Can the Preds afford to have a blue line that includes Weber, Jones, Josi, Del Zotto and Ellis, while having a popgun offence that features Mike Fischer and Patrick Hornqvist as their number 1 and 2 minute munchers up front?

One goal in 36 shots would indicate "no". There has to be the makings of a trade between these two teams. And no, I don't think Weber is realistically available. Roman Josi is interesting.

Lots of positives tonight:

Barry Trottz confirm's in a pre-game interview that the bad habit of Devan Dubnyk that bothered him the most, that being Dubnyk's penchant for spitting sunflower seeds onto the ice while watching from the bench, has been curtailed. Unfortunately Dubnyk's habit of conceded 5 goals a night not cured by watching Nashville's starting goalie

Considerably fewer Oiler jerseys thrown on the ice tonight, taking the pressure off Dallas Eakin's dry cleaning bill.

Ryan Smyth scores 125th power play goal. Total distance travelled by the 125 goals: 124 centimeters.

Fans at game don't boo Oilers. OilersNation erupts in boos aimed at Oiler fans for not booing Oilers.

Darryl Katz texts Bob Stauffer during the game: "Joey Moss isn't going anywhere."

These are professional players, a rookie coach has not won anything, need to earn their respects. Time to fire this clown and bring in a real coach, look at the Jets now, they are winning.

Right now the Oilers at 5v5 play when the game is close ARE:

3rd best in shooting percentage. Last in save percentage. 3rd last in shots for per 60 mins. 3rd last in shots attempted. 3rd last in shots against per 60 mins.

Anaheim under the same conditions IS:

Best in shooting percentage. 10th in save percentage. 10th in shots for per 60 mins. 17th in shots attempted. 7th best in shots against per 60.

I have thus proved conclusively that we must all scream, "SHOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!" every time an Oiler has the puck.
