GDB Wrap Up: Predators @ Oilers

Shea Weber

Testosterone gets Shea Weber injections. He is a terrifying man. Despite his terrifyingness, he was no match for the mighty Oil. Final Score: 5-1 Oilers

This weekend, a friend of mine offered me tickets to either tonight's game against Nashville or Thursday's game against Buffalo - oh the choices! Since I would rather watch Shea Weber play than cry over basement battles, I chose tonight's game rather than Buffalo. One thing is for sure, seeing both Shea Weber AND Seth Jones on the same team is a little bit frustrating. The Oilers defence is so far behind what the Predators have it is almost cry worthy. Maybe it's time to give Grebeshkov another look? Regardless, the good guys won and that's all that matters.

Tonight's game was a shining example of "where the hell did that come from?" Not only did the Oilers play a full 60 minutes, they defended each other AND outshot the other team. Let me give you a minute to let all that soak in.  It was beautiful. I'm tired of watching losing hockey and I don't even care if the Oilers win themselves out of a lottery spot. The "ARGHHHH I'M ANGRY THAT THE OILERS SUCK. BLARRRGGHH I'M ANGRY THAT THEY WON BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT SUCKING AS BAD" makes no sense to me. At least the whiners don't have to worry about it, Florida beat San Jose so we're still in 29th place.

Let's wrap this thing up...

The Bright Side

  • Viktor Fasth was a Swedish warlord in the net
  • The Old Dutch snack attack ALMOST came to my section
  • NUUUUUUUUUGE! Let the flood gates open
  • Return of the Ebersqueeeeeee

The Face Palmers

  • Eberle gets runs from behind, baby Nuge comes in to save him
  • Rexall DJ played neither Billy Idol nor Cotton Eye Joe
  • 3 Rexall beers cost 4x as much as my cab ride home
  • Jesse Joensuu didn't play because he hurt himself kicking the boards
  • The fans that are pissed off about wins because they want another lottery pick

Definitely one of the better games for the Oilers this season, looks like the team is starting to play for Eakins. First 30-40 games of next season could be interesting. God I love that Marincin kid!

With Jones and Weber think Nashville would part with Josi? He would help the oilers out a ton.

Is it me, or does it seem to others that the new posters gushing about the Oilers, and even Eakins, sound an awful lot like Oiler employees?

Don't get me wrong. I am happy the lads are 10-4-3 in their last 17. The goaltending is much improved and the penalty killing is better. The PP has climbed from horrific to merely terrible. There is a bit more grit to their game and though they still handle the puck like a grenade in their own end there is some improvement there as well. 6 of their last 12 are against the big California teams. If they get close to a point a game against them, I will be impressed. If they are mostly totally dominated and get nothing or only the points their goalies steal, I will still say there is improvement, but not a great deal beyond the goaltending.

Won't Get Fooled Again.

Oiler Domination To Follow

When were you fooled the first time?

Yes we all know the team needs.

Defense and Center

The team has tons of cap space.

The team will have a lottery pick.

So its logical to think the team will can take a step forward next year.

Hemsky 5, Horcoff 5.5, Shultz 3.5, Dubnyk 3.5, Jones 1.5

Nearly 20 million in dead cap space freed up this year - even the most pessimistic fans would have to agree that's positive.

Not really surprised about Oilers win tonight. Oilers are much better playing against a team with no offensive weapons. Shea Weber is just not the same without Suter. I like Weber but he is actually more offensive minded than defensive minded D. If he ever comes to EDM that he will be able to help on offensive end, just don't expect him to do the same on the other end. I actually hope that MacT won't trade for him, he has a great career but he is not what type of D that Oilers need.

Prediction: Oilers will win 2 more games against Sabres and Flames before getting destroyed by Sharks and Ducks. Oilers may tangle with Rangers a bit so it will be a 50/50 game. After Rangers game that Oilers will be on 6 game losing streak before ending the season by destroy Canucks at home.

Maybe the young oilers watched Canada win a gold medal and realized team defence wins games.

Maybe now the team has finally baught in.

I sure hope that's the case - the defensive play of team Canada was legendary.

I don't know what's more entertaining - your incessant attempts to foster your pathetic negative attitude on a sports team "FAN" website, or your egomaniacal delusion that said sports team cares enough about altering your ridiculous opinion that they would pay people to log on here at 1 AM and "pretend" to be happy about their team playing better and actually winning games.

Give your head a shake.

Also, 3rd period Eberle, where have you been all my life?

I will give you that the oilers for some reason have dominated the preds the past couple of games. However, if you dont believe shea weber is the type of d man edmonton needs to rebuild im not quite sure what type you are looking for. If a 6 ft 4 dman who can log 30 minutes a game, work the power play, and not let anyone push around his guys is not the type of d man you want im not to sure what is. He could fit into any team and instantly add an extra threat on the power play as well as a solid defense man that you'd be happy to play against any forward line in the league. I may be a tad biased as he is my favorite player but still, he is the man

You know what I think is happening:

1) The team is getting goaltending. Finally after years of Mr.Save percentage shows he is a starter.

2)The addition of Hendricks. He plays for keeps every night, every shift.

3)Some added toughness has made the kids a couple inches taller.

4)Last but not least. They were embarrassed ( I was embarrassed to be a fan and called them pussies) by not standing up for each other.I'm am not privy to what goes on the dressing room but it sure looks like one or more of the veteran players spoke from the heart about being good teammates and standing up for one and other. The last few games they have been standing up for each other.Playing for each other. As a team.

It shows, now let us all hope it continues and the corner has been turned. It is waaaaaayyyyyy overdue.

It is not realistic to expect them to beat the Blues, Sharks and Kings of the NHL just yet but it is realistic that they show up every night trying too.

When were we fooled the first time? About 8 years ago. When were we fooled the last time? I guess last year, when everybody was saying "we need Defence and Center. We have a top ten pick. Its logical we will take a step forward this year After all we have a BOLD new GM"." Last year finished up with a demolition of Minnesota and Vancouver. That was nice but it didn't mean anything. Hence, "We Don't Get Fooled Again"

The Oilers haven't played a meaningful game this season, a game with playoff implications, since sometime last November. Winning meaningless pond hockey games against fellow bottom feeders ( as this last stretch has largely been) is as hard to extrapolate from as exhibition games are. It's nice, but what does it mean, really?

Against teams fighting for their playoff lives (Detroit for example, even though they were decimated by injuries) and against elite teams(San Jose, LA, Boston, St. Louis), this team has had their brains beaten in.

I'm a fan. Its nice that a little ray of light is shining into what has been the worst season in the last 20, after a stretch of seven similar seasons. But nothing Pouzar99 wrote is untrue.

I agree. We Don't Get Fooled Again.

If Weber isn't it, what type of d-man do the Oilers need? I consider him top 5 in the league at the moment. This subset are all good at both ends of the score sheet. Weber is exactly what the team needs (*understanding that this trade will never occur).

Perhaps Ference left the ice after he made the pass so he was off the ice when the puck went in?

I think Yak shamed the 6 million dollar men into finally standing up for each other. It's one thing to be told to do so, but another thing altogether to watch everybody's favourite whipping boy try to choke a guy out in defence of a teammate!

I am also so impressed with MM. He genuinely does give me hope that maybe this team won't be bad forever. Or else they will, but I'm cheering for this kid either way.

I hope that Eberle goes on a scoring streak for the remaining games this season.

Get his value as inflated as high as possible and trade him during the draft for either a quality defenceman or quality center.

For too long the Oilers have traded players when their value was at it's lowest.

Here's to hoping.

First off. Horak not Horacek ;) personally I would rather see pitlick get another chance. Is he back from injury? Nelson must be rather nervous right now with the team in playoff mode.
