NADIR

nadir

As an Oiler fan, I can give you chapter and verse about low points in organization history. The quick exit in 1983 was nothing—we knew the Oilers would be back. The Pronger trade request was a bad damn day, I suspect you remember it. Tonight? Losing like this to the current edition of the Calgary Flames? Come on.

I'm not one for grand gestures, and I'm certainly not one who believes any business or organization should have a knee jerk reaction to a specific trainwreck. However, the score and the Hall-Eakins exchange are the cherry on top of a truly incredible season.

Oiler fans have, in my opinion, been amazingly patient during this rebuild. Even in this season—which is the most trying year of all—the grumbling has been less than one might expect based on performance/expectation.

The remaining schedule is difficult, the jerseys keep flying from the stands (and may I say that's getting old) and the hits just keep on coming.

eakins quote

Looked liked Dallas Eakins and Taylor Hall had some frayed nerves tonight. That can be a good thing—this has to be a low for both men—and something good could come from it. Sometimes these things don't work out, and history tells us if one of them is leaving we already know his name.

This has all the makings of a bizarre spring. It is, at the very least, a dramatic low point in a season that defies description. We've passed surprise and driven through anger, and long ago stopped checking the standings.

What's next? I suspect the answer is indifference.

I almost hate saying this, but I think we need to blow up this team again, players, coaches, everyone. This isn't working. It never has worked. It never will.

I just want to say, this team is losing a whole generation of fans. I have gone through all of Jr High, High School, and soon University without seeing playoff hockey. People 14 years and younger have gone through their entire school lives without seeing a meaningful game. Classrooms that were once full of Oiler jerseys are gone, replaced by other teams, and other sports.

It's just sad to see.

I suspect I will get so trashed for this comment but the problem with this organizations is egos. From the top right on down. I can live with that and just go on being frustrated. However when a franchise starts censoring its fans, like the signage and Darcy tonight, and treating the fans the way they do who are understandably upset, fans who pay for the tickets, finance a new arena, that is the height of egotism and I dont know if I can continue to support this team. Period. Trash away

Sorry to say, anyone who thinks we have hit rock bottom is forgetting how often we hit it in the past. Zero points in the remaining games will be the new rock bottom. Then, Hall demanding a trade. Then, Ekblad refusing to put on an oil jersey at the draft. Then, no signings at free agency followed by another 'bold moves' presser from Mac. The oil still have lots of gongshow in them.

"Whoever threw that jersey on the ice, they're out. They've given up. They're a quitter."

Dallas has it the other way around; it was the Oilers who have given up on the fans.

Edmonton fans are the most loyal, resolute in the NHL. They deserve a team that'll show half the heart of the fan base.

How bad have things gotten? A great many people sitting around me tonight and apparently throughout the building were suffering through the third period instead of leaving, for one purpose only - the 50-50 draw, which they expected any second, and $60,000 is nothing to sneeze it.

It soon became obvious team officials were stalling, or tanking if you prefer, because they knew the building would immediately empty, apart from Flames fans, on national television, as it did when they finally posted the winning numbers with less than 5 minutes remaining, which is the latest call I can remember in more than 30 years of coming to nearly every game.

I quit watching when it was 5-1. As soon as Smyth gets a PP goal, I will be completely indifferent.

I went back and watched a video of the Hall/Eakins incident. Eakins is a goof. How many players have you seem slam a water bottle before? And Eakins is ticked off because he got a little bit wet. There's nothing left to do but laugh.

Just viewed the game summary and my reaction was.......is it at the point yet where Oilers d-men pray that they are not teamed up with Gagner as the centerman for an entire game?

As bad as Yak started out, he has improved his defensive game over the last couple of months. Gagner has been lost without the puck for seven years now.......

I guess I am the only fan happy to see them lose this bad? Thankfully, I did not watch the game, but the only way to have a major change with the organization is a week like this - lose to Buffalo then get embarrassed by the Flames on HNIC.

Dallas Eakins was a huge mistake. MacT needs to let him go back to the AHL to lick his wounds and hopefully learn from the experience.

Ference was a bad contract that is only going to look next year and the following ones.

Gagner's contract is even worse. He only scores if Hall or one of his other linemates is drving the bus (but the same applies to Nuge and Ebs as well).

We knew Hall was not ready to be a leader at the start of the season, but where the heck is all of the veteran leadership that guys like Ference were supposed to bring to the table? It is nowhere to be seen.

Katz needs to finally step in and start letting his party buddies from the glory years go. The "Oilers Way" has been lost for a while now. The owner needs to go outside of the retired players and hire management that is saavy enough to operate in today's NHL.

The Oilers realize that their sports motivational psycho-babble of assigning values to a meaningless icon/deity (the Oilers logo, for example) may work to motivate them, it does NOT APPLY TO A PAYING CUSTOMER. Oilers players and management should take the jersey on the ice for what it is - a paying customer providing honest feedback on the value of entertainment service provided. NOTHING MORE.

If the Oilers want people to be respectful, show respect for your customers.

Lowetide, is there a word for a lower nadir? Maybe a sub nadir? I thought we had already reached the nadir of the season a couple months ago.

Using Dante's model, the bad news is that we are likely only in the eighth circle (Fraud). We still have to descend to the ninth circle (Treachery) before we can start climbing our way back out - and experiencing it all over again.

The good news is that there are allot of good hockey teams out there to cheer for - the professional ones would welcome your business, the amateur ones your support.

HALL IS NO LEADER

After the game, Hall said the team was A LITTLE BIT frustrated and they unravelled A LITTLE BIT. He said he was NOT embarrassed. This is the guy many people suggested should be the captain this year.

On HNIC they eviscerated his game with replays. They showed how Hall was cherry-picking, not back-checking, drifting aimlessly around the ice when he did not have the puck. You might say he was disheartened because of the score. That's funny, because coach Eakins says the Oilers are not QUITTERS, in fact they hate QUITTERS.

I had to laugh when people in Edmonton were talking about Hall being on the Olympic team this year. The ONLY people who thought that were Hall himself and a few fawning media types in Edmonton. In the national media they would show lists of 6, 8, 10 "bubble" players and Hall was never included.

In four years Hall will have gone the way of Jason Arnott. He just isn't that good.

About six years ago MacTavish said that professional hockey was a "result oriented business". The results don't matter if your name is Lowe, MacTavish, Eakins, Buchberger, Smith, Hall, RNH, Eberle, Yakupov, etc., etc. This team is in second last place because they are a small, soft, selfish team that is badly coached. They are exactly where they belong.

Mac's determination to keep Eakins 'Dallas is not going away' should be grounds for his firing. Not allowing the fans to bring negative signs tells us that Wrecksall sports is a corporate low-life. I really hope the season ticket buyers walk away from next season. Katz/Lowe/Mact are the problem and I won't knowingly put 1 red cent into Oiler coffers. Katz is from this point in time the worst thing to happen to hockey in this city. He should fire himself by selling the team to someone who has half a clue at least.

I am a season seat holder ( tier one fan according to K Lowe) and I haven't been to a game in almost two months. I had to phone over 25 people to give my seats away for last Tuesdays game. I took a break from this sh@tshow of a season but decided tonight to to take my two kids to the game. The only positive out of the evening was that I got 3 of us in with two tickets

On the way out I stopped in the men's room and there was quite a commotion on the other side so I had to check it out. There was a bunch of guys and they had an Oiler hat in the urinal and we're taking pics. I think they were tweeting it out. Pretty damn funny to be honest

This team is the real joke. How can Taylor Hall say he isn't embarrassed? You just got beat by the worst team in the league the other night and then got pounded by a team that's in their first year of a re-build. And yet somehow I don't think we have hit rock bottom.

@Chaffic

The big one for me is Yak. He used to have the most infectious personality and love for the game. I still remember that big interview he did in the middle of last season, the one where he said he loved Edmonton because it reminded him of his home town, and how the winters back home are three times as cold as here.

I get that he has to learn defense and up his hockey IQ, but it really seems like Eakins has crushed his passion.

As a Flames fan I really don't like Oilers but I have watched the Oilers live a few times this year and have a couple of comments. You can see they have talent and when they want to play as a group and they can be dominate. Their effort is only there for a few shifts a game and then lost until the next game. The Eakins/Hall situation is the tip of the ice berg of what is really going on in the room. I don't understand why Oilers management is so arrogant not to not make changes whether it is the coach or players. Maybe they can't because the drug lord is calling the shots.

As a Flames fan, the Oilers even piss me off with their performance this year.

Here I am at 3:35 unable to sleep, I can't get that game out of my mind. Some have suggested this to be the worst Oiler performance of all time. As a follower of the Oil since 1972, I am challenged to think of a worse one.

After a game like this its easy to get over dramatic and too pessimistic, but zero points in the last 10 games is a possibility. In the immortal words of Laddy Smid " some people are saying that things can't get worse, but they are wrong".

I hope that someone in the Oilers media team (i.e the Edmonton sports media) would ask a player, coach, GM, POHO, owner if they are embarrassed that their loyal fans feel the need to through Oil jersey's on the ice?

Tossing a jersey onto the ice is a sincere comment of the cruel joke the Oil organization is. Don't blame the messenger.

For the sillies who thought the Oilers were making progress. When you subtract the .935 goaltending they were getting, we're left with the same old same old Oilers.

Get a capable coaching staff in here who'll help these kids. Eakins sure isn't the answer. The players certainly look to be doing their best to get him canned. Which is worse, 5 coaches in 6 yrs, or hanging onto the one guy that should be fired.

If there's one constant these last five seasons, it must confirm the incompetence with this coaching/management group.

When I hear the players and coaches react to the jerseys being tossed it makes me upset. Not one of them paid for the jersey they are wearing, unlike the fans. Then to go on some kind of bullcrap rant like this team is some kind of religion and there's some sacred purpose with the logo. Are we really that screwed up in our heads. Who's our god, Kevin Lowe? When the players won't even show up to play for what the fans paid good money to see, it is totally acceptable to have that happen. It's like buying a brand of beer and half the time it's terrible and you can't even drink one, but the company says to you "don't worry it will get better". It wouldn't take long for you to stop trying it. Oilers fans are fed up and have every right to be.

Wow, the arrogance of this organization that it treats it's fans like this. It will be interesting to see how many people don't renew next year. Last year I had an Oiler employee tell me that they had 100% renewal......yeah right. I personally know one guy who let 10 seasons seats go.
