GOALTENDING TRADES...

buyers

Craig MacTavish looks like he has made his decision for his goalies next season. A day after signing Ben Scrivens to a two-year deal, he traded Ilya Bryzgalov to Minnesota for a 4th round pick, and then he acquired Viktor Fasth from Anaheim for 5th round pick in 2014 and a 3rd round pick in 2015.

I see Scrivens as more of a starter than Fasth.

Fasth is 31 years old and he has played 30 NHL games over the past two seasons. He has a .915 SV% and a 2.32 GAA. Prior to last year he played in the Swedish elite league. He has been banged up this season.

He has one year remaining on his contract and he comes with a $2.9 million cap hit.

They will battle for the starting job, and it is obvious that MacTavish wants to have solid goaltending, especially because the D corps will still be young next season. The timing of the Fasth trade is a bit surprising to me, but clearly MacTavish didn't want to wait and miss out in free agency.

Thought on the trades?

More nothing moves shuffling the deck of a bunch of low level NHL outcasts.

Nothing bold or interesting. All boring.

Time for new management with new ideas to attract some quality players.

Six rings and bold moves are not smart enough to put together a playoff contender.

What have you seen that makes you confident that mgmt can acquire an expensive D upgrade? Fasth is the Grebeshkov of goalies. There is a reason 30 year olds are playing in leagues other than the NHL.

Fasth's cap hit is fairly high for a backup with 32 games under his belt.

Oilers needed someone to challenge Scrivens but I would have preferred for them to go after a more established goalie when free agency opens.

With the Continued lack of any sort of knowledge about goalies, we will continue to lack a healthy development of ANY goalies in our system. Please get rid of the goalie coach, and stop signing backups and burying them in the minors and taking up spots that we need our draft picks to fill. The way the Oilers treat goalies they shouldn't even Draft them. It's pathetic.

Sportsnet.ca says Penner went to Washington for a 4th round pick. If true, that should tell you what Hemsky is worth.

Good job dumping Bryz for some return. I think MacLooselips paid a smidgen too much for Fasth, but no big deal.

Hmmm. There is a difference between doing something for 14 year and doing something right.

Everyone here who thinks this is a great trade needs to remember EXACTLY what they are saying come next season. This is the same exact rederick that was being spouted about Dubnyk/Labarbarra last summer. "We got these guys cheap and if they play better than everyone expects we will be alright." Do you people seriously not understand what is wrong with that line of thinking? Christ, sometimes I think Oilers fans are getting exactly what they deserve.

Penner - 13 goal, 19 assist, 32 points.

Hemsky - 7 goals, 17 assists, 24 points.

Even if you allow that Penner might get a few "gimme" points playing for a better team as compared to Hemsky, it's still hard to rationalize why Hemsky would fetch anything more than Penner

Neither of the goalies EDM now has were better than the backups on the teams they came from - IOW they were the third goalies on each team.

Now they are EDMs #1 and #2.

The odds that this duo is going to lift this team above 20th in the league next year is remote.

Better than Dubnyk and Labarbera - perhaps, but that is only saying that they will be better than the thirtieth best duo in the league this year. They likely will the bottom third or maybe bottom sixth next year - especially behind this teams defense.

Again yet another pygmy trade.

LA and ANA and STL are playing chess while KLOWE and MacT are playing marbles...

I don't quite understand these 2 trades.

Is Fasth better than Bryz? Fasth's career stats is slightly better than Bryz but he only plays 30 NHL games so it is a very small sample. And his stats this year is pretty bad, .885 SV% and 2.95 GA.

I would rather try to re-sign Bryz to 3M for 1 or 2 years, and only make these 2 trades if Bryz refused to re-sign here. It gives us at least one proven goalie for about the same salary for next year or 2, not to mention we have to give up a 3rd and 5th for Fasth and only get a 4th for Bryz.

@Fresh Mess

I actually think he is in a pretty decent spot for a guy with limited NHL experience, assuming he resigns with the Oil, he will be a solid 3rd goalie and the chances of him getting NHL time is good, albeit limited.

He will be competing with Tuohimaa and Brossoit for the 3rd spot and it's his to lose. Both Tuohimaa and Brossoit are quite young so I can't see them doing anything except bouncing between Bakersfield and OKC so he is gonna be fine.

I can't believe I'm saying this but the only goalie I feel a bit bad for is Dubnyk, I can't think of any goalie in recent history who has had as awful of a season as he has had. He had the starting job with the Oil locked up and he pooped the bed, escaped and had the opportunity for a fresh start in Nashville and now he is going to be toiling in Milwaukee until his contract expires. He seems like a pretty nice guy too who just didn't seem to cut it at the NHL level. I kindof hope he finds an NHL job somewhere. Or maybe if he brings the right safety equipment he can get a job at the refineries :-)

I wouldn't say having two goalies on your roster who have a combined 88 games nhl experience is good business. They might work out and they might not, clearly management believes in these two. I just wish I could still believe in this management

They got the maximum the market was willing to pay. If there was a better deal to be made, they would have made it.

I agree with your estimation of Hemsky's worth. I think MacLooselips would be thrilled to get a second, but more likely will get a 3rd or 4. Maybe the price will go up tomorrow as scorers start to disappear off the market.

Penner has twice as many goals for less than half the salary of Hemsky. Not to mention he's much bigger which is important at playoff time. Can't see Hemsky being worth more.

If you don't play Hemsky it shows he is fragile, a label he has carried for a few years, not the message you want to send. Only way he doesn't play is if a deal is basically already done.

A strong game tonight and he may be leaving on the Ottawa charter out of town.

Just because a player WANTS to come to Edmonton (seems very hypocritical of us not wanting someone who actually might want to come here) doesn't mean he is the right fit. Outside of that one year he had to F*&%ing beat our beloved Oil in the finals, he has been a marginal goalie at best... tack on injuries and age... he could be Knabby part duex for us

Excellent trades... getting some value for Bryz... i would've liked it to be a 3rd but beggers cant be choosers

I never watch Fasth play so all I can do is look at his stats in NHL.com and it is not impressive.

Perhaps MacT did try to re-sign Bryz and failed. Perhaps MacT and our pro scouts see something that convince them Fasth is better than Bryz. But we'll never know what happens behind the door.
