Baggedmilk Live Blogs the Trade Deadline ***UPDATED***

BaggedmilkComesToTown

It looks like my first order of business at the Nation is to sit on my ass and watch TV for the day. Life is good. Which Oilers will be traded? How many 4th round picks will we collect? No one knows for sure, but I'm "excited" to find out.

What's Happened So Far

Yesterday, MacT took care of the goaltending part of his to do list with a couple of trades. After only 4 months, #BryzNation is no more. Our favourite Russian Space Lord was traded to the Wild for a 4th round pick and I wish him well unless he is playing against the Oilers. MacT followed up the Bryzgalov trade by scoring Viktor Fasth for a 5th rounder in 2014 and a 3rd rounder in 2015.

Fasth still has another year left on his contract at $2.9 million and should make for a solid running mate with our beloved Ben Scrivens. It'll be interesting to see how they battle for ice time down the stretch. WHO COULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT THE OILERS WOULD HAVE BETTER GOALTENDING THAN THE CANUCKS WHEN YESTERDAY STARTED?!!? One thing is for sure, Vancouver sucks at goalies.

Anyway...

The Likely Candidates

As much as it sucks to say it, Ales Hemsky will likely not be an Oiler when the day is done. I never understood why some people dislike Hemsky so much. He's been a warrior for the Oilers, has played hurt, and was often the best player on a team full of clowns.  The return for Hemsky is likely definitely going to be disappointing and I'll even go so far as to predict a Twitter meltdown when the trade goes down. He scored a beauty goal last night and it bums me out to think about him on another team.

  • baggedmilk's prediction: Ales Hemsky for a 2nd and a 3rd round pick

I'd also be willing to bet Wanye's lunch money that Ryan Smyth will be leaving town again. For Smytty's sake, I hope MacT sends him to a contender for a chance to win the Cup. Personally, I'd like to see him re-signed for another year and finish where he started, but the guy deserves a chance to win. If anyone is down to go cry at the airport with me, just hit me up on Twitter.

  • baggedmilk's prediction: Ryan Smyth for a 4th round pick and my tears

Next up on your ol' pal BM's chopping block is Nick Schultz. The thing that bums me out about trading Nick Schultz is the fact that the Tom Gilbert trade will likely end up as a late round pick. At the time, lots of people were really into the Gilbert trade (I was too) but now it seems like it was all for nothing. Gilbert is having a solid year #FancyStats-wise in Florida (Jonathan Willis, Lowetide, Tyler Dellow etc. can explain) and now it seems like Nick Schultz will be traded for any asset MacT can grab. Seems like a Tambo trade lost, no?

  • baggedmilk's prediction: Nick Schultz for a 6th round pick

Last of my likely moves is another favourite of mine, Ryan Jones.  Jonesy hasn't been the same guy since the eye injury but I'll always love the man with the flow. He gave a lot of effort with not as much skill and he used his carcass to score some goals in his time here. Lots of stats guys disliked him, but luckily I don't know how to math - my guess is that we say so long to the flow today.

  • baggedmilk's prediction: Jonesy for a low pick

Hemsky feb

The Gagner/Marcobello Factor

Before the Olympic break, Twitter had Gagner going to the Kings but nothing came from it except getting angry at Kyle Clifford's name. At this point, there's no need to trade Gagner.  He's under contract for a couple more years and he would likely fetch more at the draft. Meanwhile, Marcobello has been lighting things up in OKC and it would seem like he's too good to be playing in the AHL at this point. Can he replace Gagner on the 2nd line? Has Marcobello done enough to make MacT think Gagner is expendable? I can't see it happening right now. In my uneducated opinion, it'll be Marcobello that gets traded today or neither. I think Marcobello deserves a chance in the NHL but I can't see it happening with the Oilers.

  • baggedmilk's prediction:  Arcobello for a prospect we'll all have to Google after

The Trades

While you're pretending to work, be sure to keep refreshing this article as I'll be posting live updates of Oilers trades as they happen.  Until then, if you disagree with my trade predictions let me know. If you have a prediction of your own, feel free to share so we can all argue about it. Enjoy the trade deadline, friends - workplace productivity be damned.

  • 10:05am - Boston Bruins claims Corey Potter off waivers
  • 10:30am - Ales Hemsky to Ottawa for a 5th round pick (2014) and a 3rd round pick (2015)
  • 10:49am - Former Oiler, Devan Dubnyk has been traded to the Canadiens for future considerations... tough year for Dubnyk
  • 12:23pm - Nick Schultz to Columbus for a 5th round pick **Corrected** -thanks John Shannon

That's all for Oilers trades today. The countdown to the draft lottery begins.

The year where we have a bunch of veterans to sell off, the market is weak. I also thought that Hemmer could have fetched a 1st or 2nd by looking at previous years. Boy was I off the mark.

Hemsky was never going to resign for 3rd line money. It had nothing to do with what MacT said.

Unless you move Eberle or Yakupov it's simply not economical to resign Hemmer.

I am willing to re-sign Hemsky to 4M for another 2-3 years. Not saying Hemsky will re-sign for this amount, but at least the option is there if MacT didn't make that announcement.

And if we manage to re-sign Hemsky to a reasonable contract, we will have 5 wingers who can play top 6 so we have the depth when one of them get injured. I don't see anyone in our roster or in OKC who can fill that role. We also have the option to trade one of Eberle, Yakupov or Perron (Hemsky can play LW).

It is never a bad thing to have more options.

No doubt. At least the last 20 games will be more interesting with a playoff hunt. Plus the Oilers should look pretty different next week with the call ups and subtractions.

Listen … I think the Oilers got “market value” for Hemsky today. If there was a better deal out there, it would have happened. Plus, trading away soon-to-be-UFAs on Deadline Day isn’t exactly a position-of-strength especially considering (in my opinion) that there’s no way Hemmer would re-sign here anyway.

So it is what it is: A maritime-salvage operation that resulted in a third and fifth. Some of you will call those useless picks, but I’m guessing you also choose to ignore that half (or more) of the players in the league were drafted (or signed as FAs) outside of the first round.

Hemsky is one of the more interesting players in the Oilers post-dynasty history. I think he was a tweener – a guy who was somewhere between a solid NHLer and an out-and-out star. You can argue what kept him in the in-between-zone – injuries, on-again-off-again-effort, poor linemates, poor coaching, all-of-the-above – but the numbers don’t lie. Hemsky showed amazing flashes of stardom but seldom put it together.

If you want to compare him to anyone in Oilers history, I think Joe Murphy and Petr Klima are good comparables. Neither of those players had anywhere near the longevity with the organization that Hemsky did (and, indeed, that’s one of the “unique” aspects of 83’s career – he was here a long, long time), but I can remember thinking the same things about them as I do with Hemsky. Why can’t they do this all the time? What’s keeping them?

There were nights when you couldn’t take your eyes off of him … and there were nights when you weren’t entirely sure he was in the lineup. But, above all, he was a good soldier through what has been an unbelievably dark period of this franchise. I wish Hemsky well. Good guy.

Also: Really glad to see Dubnyk landed in Montreal. I feel so bad for him – a solid goaltending prospect that the Oilers ruined when they didn’t have their own AHL farm team.

The Oil may not be here if the EIG hadn't stepped up when Pocklington went broke, but their decision not have an AHL affiliate post the 2005 lockout has impacted the franchise to this day. First moving the AHL team to the Edmonton Roadrunner in 2004/2005 and then shutting them down a year later were both business decisions and not hockey decisions. Oiler prospects breaking into the Pros from 2006 to 2008 were orphans spread around amongst whatever team might take them. We can wonder is a few propects might have turned into players in a better situation.

@pkam

There's a part of me that would have liked to have re-signed Hemsky for 2 years at 2.75 mill......as he was one of our more well rounded players in an otherwise defensively weak and inexperienced top six/nine.....but there's a bigger part of me that is happy to see him go so that we can get past the past and move on with the future....bring up the AHLers please!.......Ekblad is all ours!

Essentially what you are saying is: "Let's keep this 29th place team together"(albeit I'm sure you would add some decent defencemen to the mix)

I don't understand that thinking at all, we are incapable of scoring ANY goals right now,why would you want that to stay the same?

It's a good PR move but keep in mind the Canadian Olympic women's team basically went 0.500 against Midget teams.

It's a huge chasm between the women's Olympic team and the NHL. If Szabados ever had to play it would not be pretty.

Actually, they fared pretty poorly against midget teams. That was also playing with the women's rules (no hitting). That being said, she was an AJHL all star, and played in the ACAC against men which are both pretty good leagues. Granted not the NHL, but she is pretty good.

Hardly surprising, the resumes of the two players are remarkably similar. I wonder if Pit was in the hunt for Hemsky and Goc was their fall back position.

What a joke, the Oilers got less than nothing in return for Hemsky. If there was no market they should have kept him and let him walk in the summer for nothing. At least with him in the lineup the Oilers have a better chance of winning a game or two which would have done far more for the fanbase and young players than giving the odd AHL call up a chance to show what he can't do in the bigs. I'm disgusted with the management of this team.

Our biggest trade chips have likely fallen and I doubt that anything that remains (Smyth, Jones) would land us anything higher than a fourth rounder at best. Not a great deadline but a necessary one to clear room for summer transactions.

It's not much fun always being a seller on deadline day. The only somewhat exciting thing is the bodies moving out opens up roster spots for some prospects down the stretch. I say give Pitlick another look with Hemsky gone. Bring up Fedun. Don't have too many healthy scratches as OKC needs players for their playoff pursuit.

For crying out loud, pay attention to what's going on. Hemsky was going in the summer anyways. We would have lost him for nothing. Instead, we got two draft picks, which at least gives the Oil a chance to get something back. The only thing that warrants frustration is the fact that he should have been traded two years ago, and even then he couldn't due to injury at the wrong time.

I am feeling refreshed in my outlook of the Oilers today. So much old baggage finally dealt with this year. Lots of room to improve and lots of work to do for the future. Now we can see what we really have in prospects and GM. So far so good with changing the face of this team, by puck drop 2014/15 the lineup will be almost completely revamped, for better or worse. I have to laugh as apparently it was yesterday or the day before that Dubnyk recieved his Nashville mask, before he was out on waivers and now he is off to the Habs.

Whilst it may suck to be traded twice and put in waivers, it's gotta be kindof nice to get a bit of an NHL team tour. No matter what happens, and yes I'm an Oil fan and always have been but I think any NHL player would be in a bit of awe playing for one of the biggest franchises in NHL history. I'm kindof glad for him that he gets that chance at least (even if he is just on the bench and then sent to Hamilton when Price recovers)

Still wish him the best of luck.

We're still paying 1/2 his salary and received two picks that have about a 25% chance of playing a game in the NHL between them. That isn't something, that is less than nothing. As I said would have been better to keep him the rest of the season and let him walk but apparently you can't read.

Absolutely that could have been a career ending hit!

I disagree, I thought that Hemskey saw him at the last second, and decided that taking that kind of hit to make a play is just not worth it.

I think his career would have been less injury riddled over here, if he had had thought the same during previous occasions

You make no sense. Option one would be to keep Hemsky, pay his whole salary and watch him walk away in July for nothing. Option two was to trade him for SOMETHING, pay half his salary and actually get something back. Option one was, in fact, less than nothing.

I can't really complain about the moves the Oil has made, it was nothing surprising, bit of a cleanup before the summer, a chance for a few AHL players to see what they can offer. MacT did well in getting Fasth yesterday and let's see what happens in the summer.

It seems a lot of teams are trading potential FAs as there is some uncertainty with what the cap will be.

Overall I'm happy that MacT seems to be at least trying to address the needs of the team. He has been on the winning side of trades a bit more than losing so I'm fine with that.

Cmon, don't be so hard on MacT! I'm sure we all went into today hoping for a bold move to try a get the coveted "5th round selection"! Now we have 3 of them!

Its all part of the plan to build the best "Team of Hobbits" that happen to play in a division of Orcs!

Congrats MacKnucklehead, maybe you shouldhve kept your helmet on!!!

I agree with that, seems like Buffalo is also going through some kind of implosion as well.
