GDB Wrap Up: Kings @ Oilers

Could a night get any worse? Final Score: 3-0 Kings

Last time the Kings were in town the Oilers played miserably. The only logical conclusion we could come up with was that the boys from the Royal Half were in town and they brought some kind of Hollywood voodoo with them. Either that or the Oilers are terrible. It had to be the voodoo. At least that's what I thought until I watched tonight's train wreck. To make matters worse, Bob McKenzie had to go ahead and break the news that Ryan Smyth will be retiring! Ohhhh the sadness.

Ryan Smyth is the personification of what it means to be an Oiler. The guy was knocked his entire career for being too slow and not nearly as skilled as his heart is big. For years Ryan Smyth was the heart and soul of the team. He was the face of the franchise with a heart of gold and work ethic to spare. Even though he's not the player he once was, I'm going to miss him. I'm going to miss his involvement in the community and passion for being an Edmonton Oiler. I only hope that his dedication to the franchise will rub off on some of the kids. I encourage you to put your favourite Smytty moment in the comments section.

We shall wrap...

The Bright Side

  • All the Ryan Smyth stories that came in were both amazing and heart breaking.
  • Smytty won't have to play for the last place Oilers anymore (2nd last, I know)

The Face Palmers

  • Bob McKenzie says that Smytty will be retiring after Saturday's game... I haz sad
  • Sam Gagner went out with an ankle injury. Dude is having a miserable year
  • Shutout for the 600th time at home
  • The suck knob was broken off, thrown out a window, and fell in the sewer
  • A fart I unleashed while walking up the stairs was the most entertaining part of that game

Every time I think of Kevin Lowe trading Ryan Smyth for Ryan O'Mara (currently ripping it up for Val Pusteria HC in the Italian A liga), Robert Nilsson (out of the NHL for 5 years, but having a great year for Zurich in the Swiss league), and Alex Plante (struggling with Dornbirn EC in the Austrian League), in other words, for 3 non-NHL players, I think of the fact that Oiler fans missed out on seeing Smytty in Oiler silks for the duration of his career.

And Lowe still has a job.

Of course, Lowe was doing his usual at the time - showing everyone what a shrewd manager he was, chiseling a heart and soul guy like Smyth for nickels and dimes and ending up trading him for peanuts. Up there with his messing up trading Mike Comrie for Corry Perry, and getting Jeff Woywitka and Rob Schremp instead.

And Lowe still has a job.

Does Lowe even realize how painful it is for Oiler fans having to listen to Gord Miller and Ray Ferraro pitying the Oilers on national television ("...this used to be the center of the hockey universe, it's sad it's come to this", says Miller, to which Ferraro replies, " and it's going to get worse before it gets better..") ?

And Lowe still has a job

It hurts so much seeing the Flames be competitive and beat a team like the Kings, then seeing them come in here on back to back nights and are laughing on the bench and just having their way with the oil.

Can't take it.

Well, that just isn't fair, the Flames have a Hockey coach.

The Oilers have a fashion coach who doesn't like to get wet.

I'm just tired of watching emotion free hockey. It's blatantly obvious that the oilers have been mailing it in for a while now. It isn't human nature to be so nonchalant about something you care passionately about, so the ultimate conclusion is that the oilers don't care.

Most of us play beer league hockey. We know FOR SURE that if we lost game after game, got absolutely dominated, and barely managed 20 shots on goal a night, we would all get frustrated, angry, and do something drastic.

I've been waiting for a huge dirty hit, a malicious play, an unexpected fight, an attempt to go coast to coast and bulldog to the net, a stupid play where you let your emotions get the best of you. I've been waiting for this not because I like violence, or want to see someone injured, or like dirty hockey. I've been waiting for this because I want to see oilers players actually care about the game they are paid millions to play.

Haven't seen it yet. Not even Hall has done something stupid like kneeing Clutterbuck or fighting Dorsett out of frustration. Perron looks totally different than he did 4 months ago. It's actually painful to watch.

Just please give a crap guys.

Eakins is just as much a sissy as the rest of the team is. Sucks up to the other team every time in post-game interviews.

Rip on your own team to play better, don't put the other team on such a high horse.

Too many stories to count, I'll limit to 5 each

The player: 1) 1st career hat trick in 96-97 season (I remember reading the journal the next day, and realizing he had already scored more goals that night than he had done in his entire rookie season...) 2) Vintage Smytty amongst the lunch pail crew taking out Dallas and Colorado. 3) Toothless Smytty doing his best Gretz impression in his office, setting up Horcs for triple OT winner against SJ (my favourite Oilers all-time game/favourite Oilers game I have attended). The whole 05-06 run, including watching Smytty score game winner live Game 3 SCF in classic style (banked off body), only to listen to post-game jokes about his slapper being weaker than most players' wrist shots 4) Oct 2006 - watching Smytty break Gretz' fastest hat trick record (as an aside, I went to the game with my sister-in-law's lame-ass Flames-loving boyfriend. After the 2nd period, with the Oilers down 3-1, I believe, I made him wear the Oilers hat to get the luck going in our favour, and naturally, let him throw the hat after the trick was completed) 5) 2007 - playing unheralded role setting up Hemsky for his infamous come-back goal against Dallas.

As a human being: 1) Watching him wear his heart on his sleeve time and time again - many stories, but watching him at the airport the day he was traded was bone-chilling 2) Pre-game ritual with the pucks 3) All the charity work he has done and continues to do around the city 4) Signing jersey for me with personalized message 5) Meeting him in the Phoenix airport after he was traded back, where he and his wife were nothing but humble and gracious individuals (also told me my 2 year old daughter was cutie!)

Despite what fools think, he is retiring at the right time, and was not past his best before date. His last few years here would have been much more productive if the team around him was better. Hemsky is living proof of that.

Will be sorely missed. Only regret is that he could not deliver on his promise at the airport to bring the cup back to where his heart has always been.

And what the hell is up with the top line apparently considering not going to the WHCs? Obviously you would rather play in the playoffs but unless they have an injury (which I would argue they shouldn't even be playing right now if they do) then they should go. You get better by playing. They will get better coaching there, play meaningful games and play against good competition. If they say no then perhaps we're in more trouble than we know. It makes me question the character of the players we're trusting this franchise with.

May 10, 2006 - Game 3 versus Sharks

Paid $200 for Standing Room.

Not only was it an epic 3OT game, not only did the Oilers win, but watching Smytty's heroic return after getting his mouth caved in and losing a bucket of teeth via puck in the face, only to return and set up the game winner like a beast, made me an Oil fan for life.

The biggest laugh this week is how everyone thinks that Hall Eberle and Hopkins are this great line. They played 4 good games in an 82 game schedule, actually, I stand corrected, Hall turned it up for a few games and those other 2 coat tail riders got credit. What a joke. Those 2 losers must of had bonus numbers to make so Hall helped them out. Makes me sick.

If Katz wants to pay 3 more years and millions in salary for a guy to sit at home or coach somewhere else, he can do it any time. Maybe if enough season ticket holders (Tier 1) refuse to buy in again, that's exactly what we'll see because the cost of losing them will exceed the cost of paying that salary.

I put my beloved oldest dog down on tuesday.. Some people questioned if I was doing it too soon, and others agreed with the choice.. the one constant was that EVERYONE loved him, and didn't want to see his life stretched past his comfort zone. I doubt even the biggest opponents of Smyth retiring would want to see him play another year, then make it half way through, and be fired as an old dog. I applaud him stepping down with some dignity.

And, Lowe will continue to have a job for the rest of his life. I really doubt that made up story earlier in the year about him offering to take a sabbatical from the Oilers. Seems a bit far-fetched for that egomaniac. In his fantasy world, the Oilers eventually win the Stanley Cup and he's the architect behind the scorched earth rebuild in creating The Boys on the Bus, Part 2. How did a guy who played such hard nosed defense on those Gretzky and Messier led Stanley Cup teams end up thinking that the best way to build a team is by not even paying attention to the defense in building the current version of the team. I agree with Ferraro....it is going to get worse before it gets better. There's no real end in sight with this horrendous ownership-management-coaching combo.

These Internet hero's that choose to say he is a waste of space can have their hockey based points. I am happy to see him retire a proud man, but will fist a cuffs anyone that challenges his integrity. How many of you haters are old crotchety pricks that hate your lives? Probably 95 percent. His retirement deserves respect.

Eakins is just as much a sissy as the rest of the team is. Sucks up to the other team every time in post-game interviews.

Rip on your own team to play better, don't put the other team on such a high horse.

It's called deflecting. It's a tactic that incompetent people use to shift focus.

The real sad thing is that there are fans out there that push the "Trash it" button when any criticism of K Lowe takes place.

Great post. Clearly those fans who like Kevin Lowe couldn't pass grade 12 math because they fail to see the 8 year losing record.
