The Edmonton Oilers under Craig MacTavish have been flushing players at an incredible rate, and that's not going to slow down this spring. Here's a quick look at the exits over the last 12 months.

HERE'S YOUR HAT, WHAT'S YOUR HURRY!

Craig MacTavish did a lot of work before training camp last spring and summer, bringing in David Perron, Andrew Ference Boyd Gordon and others. He also sent away 18 men:

  1. Shawn Horcoff: The captain left via trade, and signaled a new era in Edmonton. Horcoff's new team made the playoffs.
  2. Magnus Paajarvi: Moved on to St. Louis and a his first playoffs.
  3. Ryan Whitney: His career may be over.
  4. Lennart Petrell: Finn was fuun but he's goone forever.
  5. Mark Fistric: Big man cost a fairly high pick but they didn't sign him. Off to playoffs.
  6. Theo Peckham: Wandering the minors.
  7. Teemu Hartikainen: Traded to Toronto for Mark Fraser.
  8. Eric Belanger: Retired.
  9. Jarred Smithson: Played 18 NHL games this season.
  10. Yann Danis: AHL depth for Philly.
  11. Darcy Hordichuk: Didn't play this season.
  12. Chris VandeVelde: 18 NHL games in Philly this year.
  13. Nikolai Khabibulin: Ghastly in 4 games with Chicago this season.
  14. Phil Cornet: Middling season in the AHL for Charlotte.
  15. Colten Teubert: He's now a Iserlohn Rooster!
  16. Alex Plante: Played in Austria this season.
  17. Antti Tyrvainen: Went back to Finland.
  18. Niko Hovinen:Terrific season in the KHL.

OFFLOADED DURING THE SEASON

  1. Mike Brown: Gazdic ate his lunch.
  2. Ladislav Smid: One of the strangest moves of recent seasons.
  3. Jason LaBarbera: He couldn't stop a hockey puck.
  4. Linus Omark: One of the predictable moves of recent seasons.
  5. Devan Dubnyk: Belly flop off the high board. Hope he recovers.
  6. Corey Potter: One day up near Salinas, Lord, they let him slip away,
  7. Ales Hemsky: Huge uptick in production for 83 in Ottawa.
  8. Nick Schultz: Deadline exit, everyone saw it coming.
  9. Ilya Bryzgalov: In through the out door, quick as you please.
  10. Ryan Smyth: Sail on, Moose Jaw Warrior. Godspeed.

LIKELY GONE SOON AFTER THE SEASON

  1. Sam Gagner: It's time to start again, for both sides.
  2. Anton Belov: I like him, mobility a big concern.
  3. Ryan Jones: He mentioned it a few days ago, he's down the line.
  4. Jesse Joensuu: Signed for another year, he didn't do much.
  5. Ben Eager: Concussions impacted his Oiler career.
  6. Denis Grebeshkov: He didn't get much of a chance, but he's gone.
  7. Mark Fraser: Needed to show more.
  8. Anton Lander: You have to score. At least a little.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

snow

The NHL is the toughest league on the planet. Standing still? Chances are you'll be snowed under. Craig MacTavish changed a lot in one year.

Next: What did he bring?

    I hope so.

Katz has a man crush. We're at the point where even IF this team ever scrapes into the playoffs again, Lowe can't take any credit or say he's done a good job. You could randomly pick anyone out of the phone book and they would've done a better job.

You are giving him too much credit that he won't try and take credit. He would probably make a Kevin Lowe fan appreciation day.

Best thing Lowe has EVER done was to hire MacT. Period. Quite frankly, that may save his job. I may live to regret these words, however I think MacT will make enough moves this summer to make us just barely miss the playoffs next year. Maybe 18-20th in the league. The following year, this will be a playoff team.

I don't care about Eakins supposedly being a rotten coach. At all. There is NO coach, not Kreuger, not Todd Nelson, not Babcock who would have had a winning Oct / Nov with the ridiculous display (or lack thereof) of goaltending. We've kicked the coach out of town every summer and it's time for us to change something else because kicking the coach out ain't working. The common denominator over the last few years is the core and the youth. BOTH of those things need to be changed and I freaking hope that MacT shakes things up in a BOLD way. That's not "just" moving out Gagner. That means moving out someone of value on this team... which means likely one of Eberle, Nuge or maybe Shultz or Perron, someone of value... may need to depart.

I hate it. I think Eberle and Nuge are amazing and Perron is a required antagonist for the oil, but if it means defensive help is coming back, please make it happen.

And Ekblad isn't the answer. We needed Ekblad to be drafted about 4 years ago so he'd be ready next year or the year after to play 1st line minutes. Way smarter to draft a big centre who is legitimately ready in 2-3 years to BE a number 2 NHL centre.

Also: If I hear "Todd Nelson" mentioned again as our next coach, I may just junk punch myself. Another AHL / rookie coach is not what this team needs. I'm not saying that Eakins is what this team needs but I'd prefer to give him 40 games next year AT LEAST to see. Heck, give him another season and give the team at least some consistency to see what they're made of. We change coaches more often than a nurse changes bed pans.

I think MacT will even tell you that he could have done better last summer. He tried different things and was unsuccessful ie clarkson, and going with a plan B of ex Marlies. I think he has learned from that and will do much better this summer. I agree with you on Ekblad as we are finally developing lots of Defense. Too risky to draft defense this high. I Don't think he is Bobby Orr and it will most likely take forever for him to develop..like hedman. I know this opinion will upset the fans....

What most fans don't realise here is how long it takes to develop a farm system. We are very close now and will be graduating players like detroit very soon. This takes years to come to fruition, and I think we have drafted well the past couple of years. We are very deep on defensive prospects and the forwards will start to come in the next couple of years. Nurse, Klefbom, Marincin, Simpson, Gernat, Musil, fedun, Oesterle. We do not have anywhere near that kind of depth at center. Draft a Big center or trade the pick for one please.

I am always gonna be a fan, and no matter how much they poop the bed, I'm still gonna be annoyed when they lose and all that, but this is the first time I'm genuinely clueless as to where to start with the Oil. I get that they are terrible and have been for years, it used to be a money thing before the salary cap, but that's not an issue and I don't think the solution is that easy.

It's baffling as to how it's gone this far, I've never heard so much about how horrible they are and it's not even funny anymore. When commentators are regularly taking the p*ss out of the Oil and Gord Miller on TSN talking about the glory days and how far from that they are now. It's mindblowing...

I'm not big on terrible theories and stuff, but seeing the Canucks fire their president and GM for a crap few seasons and seeing 6Rings still in there is painful.

This is a a way off idea and yeah trash all you want, but could it be that Katz is keeping his hands well in the pie and basically wanting the Oil to be crap until the new arena? I realise that's far fetched, but I just can't get my head around how it's like they seem to have decent players, but the results are abysmal.

Well one game left for Smytty which I'm sure will be lovely to see and I don't know what to expect next year.

It can't get much worse, can it??? (Please don't say it can....)
