Draft Lottery... Here We Go Again ***Updated***

BillDalyOilers

Well, well, well... Look where we're at... again. For the 300th consecutive season, Oilers fans will be watching TSN to see what another pitiful season's reward will be. It's no doubt that the Tambellini's tie jokes will be flying, in full force, as we hope and pray that the Oilers will be picking 1st overall for the 4th time in 5 years. First, third, or fourth - what will it be?  Such is life in the City of Champi.... Uhh... Nevermind.

Expectations

When the season started, the last thing any of us expected was another date with the draft lottery. For me personally, the idea of watching the lottery was repulsive, almost offensive to the core of my being. The rebuild has gone on for decades and another top pick wasn't supposed to be in the cards anymore, and I was excited about that. We were supposed to make a push for the playoffs, not suck to the point of depression.  This year, we were supposed to be debating our first playoff opponent not which player we're hoping for.  Ohhh how we overestimated.

Another Scratch Ticket

Tonight, the Oilers have a 14.2% chance at picking 1st at the draft, and a 100% chance of James Duthie making fun of Craig MacTavish for being a yearly guest at the lottery. Oh the memories. Anyway... Join me in watching the spectacle and cheering on the Oilers logo to be the last to flash across the screen.  I want to see Bill Daly hold up the Oilers logo and imagine the cheshire grin that used to flash across Tambellini's face.  I want the rest of the NHL to think that the lottery is rigged because once again we hold the power to choose who we want.  I want the Sabres terrible season to get one last kick to the pills!  Oh the sadness...

The draft lottery show starts at 6pm mst on TSN and it will give us a better idea which player we may be seeing in the fall. Unfortunately, it was another year of wanting cereal but the milk has, once again, gone bad.  I can't wait for another 2 months of arguing who the Oilers will pick. Summer is always so much fun! *sigh*

Top 5 - Draft Order

1. Florida

2. Buffalo

3. Edmonton

4. Calgary

5. Islanders (unless they give this pick to Buffalo as part of the Vanek trade)

Nation Charity Playoff Pool

Today is your last chance to sign up for the Nation Charity Pool. Guessing who Buffalo or Florida will take is a crapshoot at this point. My guess is that Buffalo takes a center and Florida takes Ekblad. A quick look at Florida's D in their system shows a ton of beanpoles and they will likely want a player ready to replace Jovanovski in a couple years.

One friggen useless win during the annual death march cost the Oil the first overall selection.

Even when we win we suck at it. Add a couple more years onto the rebuild/walk in the desert. Could be a couple years before Bennett is ready.

Clearly only three quality players in this draft. Scouts barely even acknowledged Draisaitl. Rather large step down from that 3 to 4 spot no doubt.

Panthers can draft Ekblad without any issues of rushing him. They have veteran Ds and that can certainly help Ekblad to grow. If Ekblad is coming to Edmonton that he will likely have a very tough career in front of him. Sabres' case is very simple, they need a big time scorer. The best forward will goes to Buffalo. So, Oilers will get whatever is left behind.

I think that Oilers pick third is a good thing, why wasting another player's career like Ekblad when you know full well that this organization will rush him and ruin him. After that the whiners will come back and b!tch about how those players are bad choices etc. For those whiners who whines about the wins, you don't deserve to have a winning team period.

If MacT wanted to be BOLD this summer!!!

could he make Eakins happy by

TRADING JORDAN EBERLE

to the Flyers for

right winger

Jakub Voracek 6 ft 2 215 lbs 4.5/yr

and centre

Sean Couturier 6 ft 3 200lbs 1.75/yr ?

...if not does that mean Eberle's overpaid?

EDIT: Leon Draisaitl...another centre...we could make the playoffs next year!!!

I would say if they want Ekblad this was the 2nd best outcome we could have hoped for.

Florida with 1st overall could very well go with Reinhart.

Then Buffalo would take Reinhart, leaving us our choice of the 2 me most coveted.

I am hoping for Ekblad

Oilers run a D corps of:

Ekblad - Nurse

Petry - Marincin

Klefbom - Schultz

Ference is the 7th D man

Oilers finish dead last and draft Conor McDavid...then win the cup 2 years from now....who's ready for another crapper of year to complete Tambelinni's master plan?

Just think, everyone is celebrating Calgary's wonderful first year of their successful rebuild and the Flames end 4th in the lottery draft -- while still wandering lost in the desert the Oilers hockey ops management pick 3rd and everyone is pointing to another debacle of a season and eight consecutive years out of the playoffs.

The inhumanity of it all!

Ekblad NHL GP: 0 Nurse NHL GP: 0 Marincin NHL GP: 44 Petry NHL GP: 263 Klefbom NHL GP: 17 Schultz NHL GP: 122

And you want to put the most experienced guy as the 7th pairing guy. This is the recipe for McDavid, not for winning. If we go into next season with this...

That's a really good kid they're picking at #3 and it's either a defenceman or centre, two areas where this organization really needs improvement.

Be mindful of the fact that your enemies get fat on what you leave behind (Calgary is at #4), so if Ekblad miraculously falls to 3, take him!

You can't assume the ball that was picked was one of the extra from Florida finishing 29th over 28th. It's possible but no way to prove it.

Realistically with Nurse, Klefbom, Marincin and other D prospects a 2C is a fine pick.

The right answer is to trade the pick.

Speak for yourself. I predicted lottery team.

Wow, so if we didn't win against Vancouver, that 1st pick would have been ours. That is incredible for a team 8 years into a rebuild.

So glad Mc T gave Eakins a vote of confidence. Like he would admit he was wrong. After next year, we will see how solid that vote is.

Can't see how in Gods green earth, the Oilers will ever be able to put a team together that can match up with the Kings, Ducks, Sharks, Blackhawks, Blues, or Bruins in the league. It's fantastic that Hall is progressing at a steady pace but he will soon be alone on an island here in Edmonton. Eberle has stalled and RNH seems to have taken a step back.

It's going to be a very long summer and quite possibly an even longer 2014/15 season if things don't improve.

PS. how can anyone pay a mortgage payment to go to Rexall and watch the crap on the ice?

I feel a little terrible today. Two thing happened that I believe killed the Oilers for me. 1) Mac T (who I trusted) stated Eakins chose Bucky and Smith. I no longer believe a word he says. He's become just as corporate as Lowe. 2) oilers will take Draisaitl (who bob Mckenzie admitted was far behind the other 3). Flames grab the popular choice (likely Bennett) and we get to see Burke clean our clock again.

Here's my grand prediction:

Ottawa no longer has their 1st round pick due to the trade for Bobby Ryan and now that Spezza clearly wants out of town, the Sens will be looking for a replacement centre,

3rd overall pick + Gagner for Spezza and a pick or prospect..

Oilers then get a proven 6'3" 220lb center who can play on the 1st or 2nd line and he's only 30 (turns 31 this summer). Sens replace Spezza with Gags then draft Draisatl to be the future Spezza replacement.

I could be dreaming but I think this trade would work for both sides...

Bold move would be to trade RNH to the offence starved Coyotes for Ekman-Larsson.

Then draft a centre with the third pick.

Then go hard after Statsny and Grabovski in free agency. Oilers could offer Statsny $7M per. Could offer Grabovski Gagner money.

If both sign, great, if not they should be able to get one in an overpay. Then let the rookie and Arcobello fight it out for the second line centre spot. They could also go sheet Spezza if they couldn't sign a free agent to replace RNH.

Also could talk to New Jersey about Gagner for Henrique.

At least that way you have your top pairing defender for the next ten years. And there are more options to replace RNH.

There's zippo for the right side there Zarny. That's why he was so important.

You're right, might as well trade that pick for Ben Lovejoy. He's all world against the Oil. Perhaps he's all world in an Oiler jersey.

When you have a chance to get a guy with the pedigree of a Jeff Woywitka, you do it. Said the Oilers boss Kevin Lowe after the Comrie trade. He's the guy still making the decisions around here.

Was trying to get a read on just how physical a player Draisaitl is. Found the following.

He hasn't missed any games in two years of CHL hockey.

The following are quotes from scouts and analysts at nhl.com

"You want to talk about a miniature Jaromir Jagr with a Doug Gilmour-type intensity, you've got him right here," Central Scouting's Peter Sullivan told NHL.com.

"Leon is a great hockey player but also a great teammate," Tuomie said. "His skill level is unbelievable. He thinks the game very well and makes players around him look better."

"That kid works so hard every shift," Bordeleau said. "I don't see how this kid doesn't go early. There's no one in this draft class who can protect the puck like him."
