Draft Lottery... Here We Go Again ***Updated***

BillDalyOilers

Well, well, well... Look where we're at... again. For the 300th consecutive season, Oilers fans will be watching TSN to see what another pitiful season's reward will be. It's no doubt that the Tambellini's tie jokes will be flying, in full force, as we hope and pray that the Oilers will be picking 1st overall for the 4th time in 5 years. First, third, or fourth - what will it be?  Such is life in the City of Champi.... Uhh... Nevermind.

Expectations

When the season started, the last thing any of us expected was another date with the draft lottery. For me personally, the idea of watching the lottery was repulsive, almost offensive to the core of my being. The rebuild has gone on for decades and another top pick wasn't supposed to be in the cards anymore, and I was excited about that. We were supposed to make a push for the playoffs, not suck to the point of depression.  This year, we were supposed to be debating our first playoff opponent not which player we're hoping for.  Ohhh how we overestimated.

Another Scratch Ticket

Tonight, the Oilers have a 14.2% chance at picking 1st at the draft, and a 100% chance of James Duthie making fun of Craig MacTavish for being a yearly guest at the lottery. Oh the memories. Anyway... Join me in watching the spectacle and cheering on the Oilers logo to be the last to flash across the screen.  I want to see Bill Daly hold up the Oilers logo and imagine the cheshire grin that used to flash across Tambellini's face.  I want the rest of the NHL to think that the lottery is rigged because once again we hold the power to choose who we want.  I want the Sabres terrible season to get one last kick to the pills!  Oh the sadness...

The draft lottery show starts at 6pm mst on TSN and it will give us a better idea which player we may be seeing in the fall. Unfortunately, it was another year of wanting cereal but the milk has, once again, gone bad.  I can't wait for another 2 months of arguing who the Oilers will pick. Summer is always so much fun! *sigh*

Top 5 - Draft Order

1. Florida

2. Buffalo

3. Edmonton

4. Calgary

5. Islanders (unless they give this pick to Buffalo as part of the Vanek trade)

Nation Charity Playoff Pool

Today is your last chance to sign up for the Nation Charity Pool. We want to raise as much money for the Inner City Children's Program as possible, so I beg you to go to www.nationdrafts.com and sign up. It'll only cost you $10, so do what you have to do make it work. Go a day without buying a $15 coffee. Skip the latest Angry Birds update. Sell your kidney.  Lord knows we won't be buying Rexall beers anymore, this year. Whatever it takes - make it happen. Put your hockey knowledge to good use and support a great cause. And who knows, maybe your gypsy hockey predictions will land you one of our ultra sexy grand prizes

Yakupov and the 3rd, to the Islanders in exchange for John Tavares and Travis Hamonic. maybe a possibility if in fact Tavares does want off the Island.

Snow can select 3rd, and let the Sabres have their 5th overall this yr, and still hold onto their first in 2015.

When you look at this draft coming up, trading the pick for players who can play now makes the most sense to me.

The more realistic trade with the Isles is to trade 3rd straight up for Griffen Reinhart. GM Snow gets a bit of a break from his past bad deals by acquiring a higher draft pick for a prospect that was drafted in 2012 that Isle fans have no idea who he is.Isles already are stocked with future rearguards. Win win for both.

The Oilers didn't weigh him as far as I know! Look we may or may not agree on who they should take but people need to stop putting words in other peoples mouths just because I'm not in love with another guy who is 6-6'1who ever you choose to believes measuring tape but Bennett himself said the 180 lb

Panthers can draft Ekblad without any issues of rushing him. They have veteran Ds and that can certainly help Ekblad to grow. If Ekblad is coming to Edmonton that he will likely have a very tough career in front of him. Sabres' case is very simple, they need a big time scorer. The best forward will goes to Buffalo. So, Oilers will get whatever is left behind.

I think that Oilers pick third is a good thing, why wasting another player's career like Ekblad when you know full well that this organization will rush him and ruin him. After that the whiners will come back and b!tch about how those players are bad choices etc. For those whiners who whines about the wins, you don't deserve to have a winning team period.

Assuming that Ekblad is gone by the time we pick, I vote for Sam Bennett. Cue the 'we don't need another small forward' crowd. He might not be a giant like Draisaitl, but from what I've seen and heard he competes harder. The Oilers do need size but more than anything they need players who compete harder. I'm sure I'll be in the minority but I would take Bennett over the big guy.

A 2C can be found through free agency or trade much much easier than a once in a generation type defenceman like Ekblad.

You want a 2C? Call up Philly and see what it would take to get Couturier. Or call up Colorado and see what they want for O'Rielly. I dont see them being able to afford Stastny and Orielly

I agree with you about Bennett but we really need to stop with the giant talk. Everyone is talking like Draisaitl is Eric Lindros, he was listed on TSN as 6'1 203lbs, I get the Oilers need size but I think we are trying too hard to force someone into that role.

Okay........here is the deal well before the draft.

Oilers draft Sam Bennet. Leave him in the minors for a couple of years. People eventually forget about him. He grows to 6'2" and 210 lbs. He gets to be a better player, fighter, and team mate.

He comes out in his first year and scores 50 goals and we win the Stanely Cup........must be dreaming......oh god someone please help.

Draisaitl ain't Lindros...I might go as far as saying he could be better than the oilers current 2C ...I might say he's going to play 2C on the oilers in the fall if he gets picked...I won't say a Bennett will play or even a Reinhart will play...I see Leon as a close enough comparable like Nathan Mckinnon who will compliment a Taylor Hall and a RNH...a REAL 2C ...like a Couturier might be one day...nevertheless I can't see the Ekblad pick being done because this club needs a 2C now...

Any pick in the top 4 in most drafts can be as good as a #1. It worked alright for Colorado. As good as ekblad looks there is no guarantee that he is going to be a #1 dman in the NHL. The NHL is a whole different beast for Dmen coming out of junoir.

Maybe its a good thing the Oilers get a Reinahart or Draisitl as either have a good chance of being a #1 center in the NHL or at least a very good #2.

Draisitl would add another element to the oilers top six as he brings heaviness and is amazing at protecting the puck. He has an underrated shot and is also a great passer.

That won't do it but that is exactly the kind of thinking MacT needs.

If it were possible you're likely looking at more like Nuge + 2014 3rd overall + 2015 1st overall and there is likely spare parts on both sides as well. If Hamonic was included the Oilers are likely sending a D prospect like Klefbom, Marincin, Simpson etc back.

We need a centre.

6 Leon Draisaitl C 10/27/95 L 6.00.5 199 Prince Albert WHL 6 4NA

Draisaitl is only not much bigger than Gagner who is 5-11 204 lbs.

I get he is 18, but he is not going to be a huge man (Thorton, Getzlaf).

I would go with the higher skill center and add size on the wing.

Whoever they draft I hope that player spends another year in junior. Gain size and experience. Spread out the expensive contracts.

Whoever wants to trade the pick or Yakupov. Even if you trust MacT. Do you trust the pro scouts enough to make that trade ? I don't.

Do you trust MacT after his endorsement of Eakins and Schultz ? Apperently Schultz is the next Coffey and can write his own ticket. I'm not sure.

Why do I think the Oilers will screw all this up ? Evidence of the past is a good prediction of the future.
