Draft Lottery... Here We Go Again ***Updated***

BillDalyOilers

Well, well, well... Look where we're at... again. For the 300th consecutive season, Oilers fans will be watching TSN to see what another pitiful season's reward will be. It's no doubt that the Tambellini's tie jokes will be flying, in full force, as we hope and pray that the Oilers will be picking 1st overall for the 4th time in 5 years. First, third, or fourth - what will it be?  Such is life in the City of Champi.... Uhh... Nevermind.

Expectations

When the season started, the last thing any of us expected was another date with the draft lottery. For me personally, the idea of watching the lottery was repulsive, almost offensive to the core of my being. The rebuild has gone on for decades and another top pick wasn't supposed to be in the cards anymore, and I was excited about that. We were supposed to make a push for the playoffs, not suck to the point of depression.  This year, we were supposed to be debating our first playoff opponent not which player we're hoping for.  Ohhh how we overestimated.

Another Scratch Ticket

Tonight, the Oilers have a 14.2% chance at picking 1st at the draft, and a 100% chance of James Duthie making fun of Craig MacTavish for being a yearly guest at the lottery. Oh the memories. Anyway... Join me in watching the spectacle and cheering on the Oilers logo to be the last to flash across the screen.  I want to see Bill Daly hold up the Oilers logo and imagine the cheshire grin that used to flash across Tambellini's face.  I want the rest of the NHL to think that the lottery is rigged because once again we hold the power to choose who we want.  I want the Sabres terrible season to get one last kick to the pills!  Oh the sadness...

The draft lottery show starts at 6pm mst on TSN and it will give us a better idea which player we may be seeing in the fall. Unfortunately, it was another year of wanting cereal but the milk has, once again, gone bad.  I can't wait for another 2 months of arguing who the Oilers will pick. Summer is always so much fun! *sigh*

Top 5 - Draft Order

1. Florida

2. Buffalo

3. Edmonton

4. Calgary

5. Islanders (unless they give this pick to Buffalo as part of the Vanek trade)

Nation Charity Playoff Pool

Today is your last chance to sign up for the Nation Charity Pool. We want to raise as much money for the Inner City Children's Program as possible, so I beg you to go to www.nationdrafts.com and sign up. It'll only cost you $10, so do what you have to do make it work. Go a day without buying a $15 coffee. Skip the latest Angry Birds update. Sell your kidney.  Lord knows we won't be buying Rexall beers anymore, this year. Whatever it takes - make it happen. Put your hockey knowledge to good use and support a great cause. And who knows, maybe your gypsy hockey predictions will land you one of our ultra sexy grand prizes

Speak for yourself. I predicted lottery team.

MacT left holes in this team the size of a Mack truck last summer, especially on defence and at centre. Anyone who thought this wasn't a lottery team was looking at it through rose coloured glasses.

Was trying to get a read on just how physical a player Draisaitl is. Found the following.

He hasn't missed any games in two years of CHL hockey.

The following are quotes from scouts and analysts at nhl.com

"You want to talk about a miniature Jaromir Jagr with a Doug Gilmour-type intensity, you've got him right here," Central Scouting's Peter Sullivan told NHL.com.

"Leon is a great hockey player but also a great teammate," Tuomie said. "His skill level is unbelievable. He thinks the game very well and makes players around him look better."

"That kid works so hard every shift," Bordeleau said. "I don't see how this kid doesn't go early. There's no one in this draft class who can protect the puck like him."

Bennett or Leon are both fine with me. I prefer Bennett but Leon is obviously a great choice too. We do not need Ekblad as much as #2C. Glad we won the last game to reduce managements chance of screwing it up again

Just think, everyone is celebrating Calgary's wonderful first year of their successful rebuild and the Flames end 4th in the lottery draft -- while still wandering lost in the desert the Oilers hockey ops management pick 3rd and everyone is pointing to another debacle of a season and eight consecutive years out of the playoffs.

The inhumanity of it all!

and centre

Sean Couturier 6 ft 3 200lbs 1.75/yr ?

...if not does that mean Eberle's overpaid?

EDIT: Leon Draisaitl...another centre...we could make the playoffs next year!!!

The Flyers might trade Couturier straight up for Eberle.

Here's my grand prediction:

Ottawa no longer has their 1st round pick due to the trade for Bobby Ryan and now that Spezza clearly wants out of town, the Sens will be looking for a replacement centre,

3rd overall pick + Gagner for Spezza and a pick or prospect..

Oilers then get a proven 6'3" 220lb center who can play on the 1st or 2nd line and he's only 30 (turns 31 this summer). Sens replace Spezza with Gags then draft Draisatl to be the future Spezza replacement.

I could be dreaming but I think this trade would work for both sides...

Leon Draisaitl will probably be a decent centre in the NHL. But he is not going to be the star player that some on here think that he will be. He is a soft offensive player who is not good defensively and does not back check. He protects the puck well against the smaller junior players, but against the larger NHL players, he will probably struggle to be as good. Sam Bennett is a great two way player who competes hard, and plays well in both ends of the ice. Bennett would be along the lines of a Toews, Bergeron or Doug Gilmore type of player. It should be a complete no brainier to take Bennett if he is available.

Clearly only three quality players in this draft. Scouts barely even acknowledged Draisaitl. Rather large step down from that 3 to 4 spot no doubt.

You can't assume the ball that was picked was one of the extra from Florida finishing 29th over 28th. It's possible but no way to prove it.

Realistically with Nurse, Klefbom, Marincin and other D prospects a 2C is a fine pick.

The right answer is to trade the pick.

Reinhart is a Nuge clone and we don't need wo small centers. Agree that Bennett may be the best centre skill and compete wise but I think he's gone before 3. Calgary is going to be getting scary in a couple years too. Monahan and Reinhart...

Guessing who Buffalo or Florida will take is a crapshoot at this point. My guess is that Buffalo takes a center and Florida takes Ekblad. A quick look at Florida's D in their system shows a ton of beanpoles and they will likely want a player ready to replace Jovanovski in a couple years.

Assuming that Ekblad is gone by the time we pick, I vote for Sam Bennett. Cue the 'we don't need another small forward' crowd. He might not be a giant like Draisaitl, but from what I've seen and heard he competes harder. The Oilers do need size but more than anything they need players who compete harder. I'm sure I'll be in the minority but I would take Bennett over the big guy.

^This. I'd rather have another David Perron than an Olli Jokinen. If the best-case scenario with the two is Gilmour vs. Kopitar, and the worst case scenario with the two is something like Langkow/Mueller, and the middle, likely road is something like a Peca/Bonk... I'd take the Gilmour/Langkow/Peca player any day.

I agree that this team needs heart as much, or more, than it needs size, and the thing with a player like Bennett is that it seems like there isn't quite as much risk. The Oilers can't muff this pick, they just can't.

If this team is picking Draisaitl ahead of Bennett, they need to be really, really sure that he's got the fire and the work ethic to make it in the NHL where 80% of the players are as big and strong as him. They can't be basing this decision on an inch and 25 lbs.
