GDB Wrap Up: Oilers @ Ducks

baggedmilk

EakinsVictories

Another good effort, but moral victories don't count. Final Score: 3-2 Ducks.

Having a back to back against the Sharks and Ducks is like getting kicked in the balls by the lady that ripped off your tearaways (just me?). If 6 hours of punishment is your thing, you were probably into it. If you've got dainty baby feelings like I do, seeing these two games on the schedule was like having the NHL schedule maker steal my Dunkaroos. It's not cool and it's uncalled for. Not that it really matters at this point. *sigh*

Last night was probably one of the best examples of ELPH that I've seen in a while. Unexpectedly, the Oilers followed that up with another round of it. Who would have thought that we'd get two competitive games against California teams on back to back nights!? (Quick, everyone buy a lotto ticket) Speaking of effort, how good was Taylor Hall tonight? The guy was flying and getting chances at will. At the end of the day, the good effort wasn't good enough for a win. At least the draft whiners are happy.

Wrap it up...

The Bright Side

  • Viktor Fasth we speak your name!
  • Gene Principe put a hockey stick in his pants - I love that man
  • Taylor Hall was a chance machine
  • Everyone sit down...they scored a Power Play goal!

The Face Palmers

  • Dress like a seat night in Anaheim
  • Twitter was more interesting than long stretches of the game
  • Corey Perry is awesomely annoying and it upsets me

Nation Charity Playoff Draft

Just because the Oilers are a pile of suck and can't make the playoffs to save our lives doesn't mean the playoffs aren't happening. Since we'll all be watching anyway, it's time for you to head over to www.nationdrafts.com and sign up for the Nation Charity Pool.

This year, the sign up fee is only $10 and part of the proceeds are going to the Inner City Children's Program. Our goal is to raise as much money as possible for a great cause and bestow upon the winners some heavenly prizes. And don't act like you won't spend $10 on something dumb anyway.  New Pogs can wait, helping others cannot.

Oiler Domination To Follow

Question is which is better for next year and the future...

Legwand Ekblad - Ekblad Nurse will be the d towers patrolling the Oilers back end for the next decade.

Or...

Markhov Reinhart - Top 6 secured for the next decade, solid 1-2 punch up the middle. Markov will boost the scoring and power play.

Tough choice for MacT at the draft.

Oiler Domination To Follow

Top line looked good.

Larsen looks good on the 4th line.

Marincin and Klefbom look great.

If I'm MacT I draft a center over defense every day of the week. Franchise top line centers are impossible to trade for.

If we can sign Markhov and Nikitin this off season our defense will become mediocre.

Number 2C is the last missing peice upfront. We have solid wingers in Hall, Perron, Eberle and Yakupov.

If you draft Ekblad, you have to spend the cap on Statsny or Legwand which is far less likely imo.

Drafting a center also allows Gagner to be traded for a roster player.

Yak who. Don't miss him at all. Time for him to go, a younger version of Ovejekin. Great hockey player, will never win anything. Someone will over pay for Yak for that Dman. After all Ottawa took Hemsky and they think they like him.

Can't believe so many people are suggesting drafting reinhart. 1 nuge is fine but 2 nuges to fill your top 2 C spots is trouble. I would like us to somehow trade for someone like couturier. Size is important. Especially in the decision that the oilers are in.

Amazing creativity, Mr. Eakins. I tip my hat to you yet again

It only took you 74 games to clue in.

I am been saying this all season. This is anther reason that Eakins has to go.

Eberle and RNH look awesome when playing with Hall.

When Gagner and Perron play with hall it does not make Gagner look better. Perron looks the same no matter who he pays with.

Notice how much better the team play when Yak is out. Yak is a great talent but not ready for prime time yet.

Hard to change ones opinion of this team in light of these past two games after they played as badly as they did against NYR.

SJ and ANA both played a game that let the oil play to their strengths - one wonders if they took them too much for granted and both teams beat the oil when they focused.

@Jakester

I believe our problem at centre is that we don't have enough good centres and not that we lack size. Reinhart will likely be a very good centre and fill out to a size that can compete with anyone. I realize that no one will want to wait for him to become the centre that he will be in 3-4 years, but if the right moves are made we could have the best of both worlds.

What I suggest: draft Reinhart, try to sign Stastny, trade Ebs or Yak for Couturier or package them for a top pairing Dman, break Reinhart in on the right wing, and let him learn the NHL game without the burden of playing centre (plus he can replace Ebs/Yak.) Centre would become a position of strength. When Reinhart is ready to take over the centre position we can trade one of our centres (in this scenario either Couturier or Stastny) to fill a hole in the lineup.

With this plan we either get: Reinhart + Stastny + Couturier - Ebs/Yak package------ Or Reinhart + Stastny + high quality Dman - Ebs/Yak package------- Or Reinhart + Couturier -Ebs/Yak package (obviously in this case Stastny chose not to sign here)

That is just one way to draft Reinhart while improving our current team scenario off the top of my head. I think it is an option as long as Reinhart is available.

Edit: you could insert O'Rielly into the Couturier proposal instead. Anyone like them would be a great fit

You also described eberle, but he makes 6M and plays an easier position.

I wouldnt call either mediocre though.

If your going to trade any of the young guys.. I see it as a pretty obvious selection. Eberle. The kid still has some value and we could get decent return for him. I love Ebs, but I don't see him performing much higher then he currently is. I think he has nearly reached his ceiling. I think he will be a consistent 65-70 point guy however. Just my 2 cents.

They also go on long scoring droughts. Keeping them together is just telling other teams that if they can shut that line down, then the game is there's. At least spread throughout the line up the opposing coach might actually have to do something.

Not to mention this line played great together the last to games, how many of those did the team win again?

Have the debate about drafting a centre vs a dman, fine. Leave the ufa's out of the equation because both of those guys are not going to sign in Edmonton.

The ufa option for even 2nd tier guys is a long shot at best unless management wants to overpay.

If the HEN line can play like this consistently then we will have one of the top first lines in the league.

If MacT can jettison Samwise (he's gots to go) and get a bonafide second line center with size, plus an actual top pairing defenceman, then I won't be surprised if the Oil improve by 20+ points next year.

I think he can get these players in the UFA market - for a massive overpay, which I don't care about. He has to get these guys.

This isn't a new idea or concept, and is hardly Eakins fault.

The kids play well together for 3-4 games, then the other teams start taking advantage of their defensive liabilities, and light the kids up until they need to be broken up.

When all 3 commit to playing defense EVERY game, they'll be able to stay together for more than just short bursts.

1. He looks like he wants out.

It was a great effort no doubt but 'bottling this up' for next season would give us a record of 0-82. The effort is there but this team has to be able to win. Effort only gets you an honourable mention in the footnotes of the record books. If the necessary trades and acquisitions are not forthcoming we just might be in the running for McDavid.

If we keep playing like this, I wonder how long it will take Bob Stauffer to make the comment again that "It's starting to happen, things are starting to turn around". When I heard that before the Calgary game, I just about died laughing. This is the best thing that we can hope for, to run the table in reverse. We start winning, and Katz will think nothing's wrong with the current system. Some people say the team's like a train wreck - they can't look away, for me, I can't stop watching for another reason. It's like the captain says. I'm going down with the ship.

There was one play last night where Perry had the puck along the boards. It was obvious from his positioning that he was going to drive the play towards the center. Gagner was positioned well but for some inexplicable reason he decided to follow another Ducks player towards the sideboards leaving Perry a chance to fire off a shot. Immediately followed by a whistle and the customary mouth piece chewing. If Gagner is the center man where was he going? Is the defensive structure taught by Eakins that confusing or has Gagner not figured out defense 101 yet? Sample poll for most annoying post whistle moments of 2013-14 season. We now have an actual first line! Well, it just happens to be the same first line as last year, but let's move past that. Can we now build a team around this instead of trying to "discover" a first line by trying every possible combination of players?
