GDB 78.0: LAST ROAD SHOW

Jason Gregor
April 04 2014 01:25PM

RoadShow-Dozer

The Oilers wrap up their road schedule tonight in Phoenix. Only Buffalo has won fewer road games, 8, than the Oilers' 12. Florida's final five games are all at home, and if the Oilers do win tonight they will tie the Panthers with 13 road wins.

Regardless of what happens tonight, this won't be the worst road season in Edmonton history. In 1993/1994 the Oilers won a measly 8 of their 42 road games and in 2009/2010 they won 9, while in 1992/1993 they won 10. Hopefully one day in the next five years we are talking about competing for most wins, not fewest

The Coyotes have won all four meetings so far this season, including 5-4 and 4-3 OT wins at home. Prior to this season the Oilers were 7-6-2 in their last 15 visits to Phoenix, but this year they've been dominated by their Pacific division foes to the tune of 5-16-4.

The top line and/or Ben Scrivens will most likely have to carry the team on their back if they hope to pick up their 13th road win.

LINEUP

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Lander-Gagner-Perron
Smyth-Gordon-Hendricks
Pinizzotto-Acton-Larsen

Marincin-Petry
Klefbom-Schultz
Fraser-Belov

Scrivens

On Wednesday in Anaheim, RNH's line combined for 19 shots. Sam Gagner was the only other regular forward to register a shot, he had five. Larsen had three, Belov had two while Marincin and Klefbom each had one.

The other lines barely registered any sort of offensive pulse. I understand the team is banged up and it is late in the year, but Lander was the only remaining forward to even throw a puck on net, and his shot was blocked. They need a better offensive effort from the rest of the team tonight.

QUICK HITS...

  • Hall needs 7 points in the final 5 games to reach 80. The way the top line is playing I think that is very realistic.

  • Hall, Eberle and Perron are tied for the team lead in goals with 26. I'll pick Eberle to finish in the lead by one over Hall.

  • Keith Yandle is one of three D-men to lead their team in scoring. Erik Karlsson leads Ottawa with 70 points, Yandle has 51 for the Coyotes and Shea Weber has 50 in Nashville.

  • Nashville and Phoenix are two of the seven teams who don't have a forward with at least 50 points. Detroit (injuries and Nyquist late call up are main reason), Buffalo, Florida, Calgary and Vancouver are the others. The Flames (Hudler 49), Coyotes (Vrbata 49) and Red Wings (Nyqvist 46 in 51 games) will likely get there, but it shows how far the Canucks have fallen offensively.

  • The Oilers have officially secured a 14.2% to win the draft lottery. The best they can finish is 28th. They are one point back of Florida, and if they pass they will go into the April 15th lottery with the 3rd highest chance to win. If they stay in 29th, they will have a 18.8% chance of winning. Holy *&#% it will be nice when I don't have to write about the lottery odds between January to April.

  • The Oil Kings spanked the Wheat Kings 5-0 last night and they play game two Saturday at noon at Rexall Place. The 13-0 Edmonton Rush can secure first overall in the entire league at 8 p.m. on Saturday when they face Colorado. If you're tired of leaving Rexall in a bad mood, I suggest you attend one, or both, this weekend. Those teams are great and to paraphrase Jay Brown, "They actually deserve good fans."

TONIGHT...

a-adriana-lima-victorias-secret-fantasy-bra

GAME DAY PREDICTION: It is positive Friday, and since I don't see the Oilers winning, 4-3 loss, at least Adrianna Lima will brighten up your day.

OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: The first line scores two goals. Eberle and Hall.

NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: The losing finally catches up to Wanye Gretz. He elects to update his Tinder profile, instead of watching the game, with a new picture and the hopes he'll have better luck. In his old picture he had pieces of Eberle's hair in his hand, but that was too creepy, so he elects to just hold his Eberle doll in his updated photo. Good luck Wanye, good luck.

I'd gladly take one more year of Eakins if it meant a shot at McDavid next summer. If they hang onto Dallas for one more year, it could reveal their intent all along (Tanking). How else can one explain all this incompetence?

Enjoy the game and happy weekend to all my fellow diehard puckers here.

It'll be funny to see MacTavish do an about face in two weeks, when he fires Eakins.

A lot of ship will hit the fan during the post season interviews. I'm sure this summer will be all lipstick on a pig/polishing a turd again for this organization. Probably more than the previous 4 yrs combined. So much passion from the fanbase and zero responsibility from management for this mess. The players all gave Dallas a year, but now they're playing like they're all fed up with him.

With the Coyotes losing last game I hope they're amped up with possible playoff hopes and steal the Oilers lunch money in regulation. The Panthers sure are breathing down our necks. Every loser point(s) hurts the (Ekblad and clean house) cause.

By my count 4 of this seasons wins were in OT. There was no OT in 93/94. Thus they would have gotten only FOUR (fricken) wins using 93/94 metrics.

And they did it with three first rounders and a salary caps both of which the team didn't have in 92/93. Hurray!!!

Katz Lowe and MacT must be ecstatic with this stellar result. Contracting Eakins for four years wasn't enough.

Sorry on one point not on the other.

I misread the 12 instead of eight.

However games after OT ended in ties in 93/94. Thus four of the otw this year could have new recorded as Ties in 93/94. Thus thy could tie for worst road season ever.

Why the heck is Gagner playing center and Lander on the wing?

Gagner should have been allowed to heal properly after the smashed jaw, and when he got back, they should have switched him on the wing and keep Arco as 2nd line center for the whole season. MacT even told the kid to get a place in Edmonton.

I have been mainly focussed on individual things like RNH getting two goals and Ryan Smyth getting his Powerplay goal and Hall getting to 80. I want all those things to happen so I can feel better about the season. They also need to get two more points so they won't have the worst record in franchise history. That would be a plus.

I would bet my last dollar, that the Eakins hiring was inspired and demanded by none other than Katz himself.

Katz is the guy that wants to chase the sparkly marbles. YOu all recall that Eakins was supposedly the big chase last year.. The other rational is look at the contract for years... this is a Katz call.

Highly unlikely. The assistant coaches will be terminated and hopefully Lowe as well within the next month. If Mac T fires Eakins, Mac T must go. The kids in the locker room are already traumatized by all they've seen so far. Taylor Hall wishes he could be traded so he can flourish just like Seguin. This pathetic franchise has sunk extremely low. Can it sink any lower? I hope not. A sense of direction by a leader who can inspire, an associate coach and new assistants along with a character power forward, a big bottom 6 forward that fights to complement Hendricks and a legit 1-2 defense pairing will change everything next year.

In Mac T I Trust.

I know that we are banged up but that lineup looks more AHL than NHL. Smyth and Gordon's combined number of NHL games played likely exceeds the rest of the team's totals put together.

GDP: Coyotes 4 Oilers 2

OGDP: We have hope, we have youth and we have Eakins. We also will have a loss by the end of the night after keeping it close for the first two periods.

NSOGDP: The league is amazed that the Coyotes post a sell out with the Oilers in town. During the telecast, a camera zooms in to catch a battle along the boards and you can clearly see that 2/3 of the bodies in the stands are either cardboard cut outs or mannequins.

Vancouver will be officially eliminated by the time that we play them while the Kings and Avalanche have already clinched playoff spots so this is our last chance to play spoiler. I'm not a fan of any of the Wild, Stars or Coyotes but Phoenix does not deserve playoff hockey. I'll say 4-3 Oilers. All 4 goals by the top line.

Adrianna Lima is by far the hottest Victorias Secret Angel ever!! Love her!!

I also agree wholeheartedly with the concept of having Lander play center and who really cares where Gags plays. He can play stick boy for all i care. Even then, i have a hard time trusting him to hand out the proper sticks. Lets go with locker room attendant.

Im anxious for the season to be over cause then we dont have to be proven every other night how terrible of a team and franchise we are. However, i dont want the season to end as all we will talk about is another high draft pick, and what is the best decision we can make, when really its been shown to be Katz decision, regardless of what the scouts think.

Im in full agreement of watching the Rush play, and have tickets to tomorrows game as well as April 19th. Excited to see some actual heart on that field. Something i havent been able to say about the Oilers in a long time, and cant see myself saying about the Eskimos anytime soon either.

Yeah, I'm sure Taylor Hall is full of hate and anger towards Oilers management because he's got 5 fewer points, and has played 4 fewer games this season than Seguin. It really is incredibly to see how much more Seguin has flourished over his career than Hall, isn't it? I'm sure all the statistical evidence the NHL can provide will support such a theory.

You will NEVER hear MacTavish admit that Eakins was a mistake, just like you won't hear Lowe admit MacTavish was a mistake.

It's called the old boys club for a reason.

Having said that,MacTavish & Lowe have to much pride and will end up going down with Eakins, next year if the team is around the same as this year then bye bye old boys club.

More likely the team will actually make a slightly less embarrassing performance next year, and everyone stays on to celebrate the success. We are all doing cartwheels when the gas prices drop to a buck a liter but forget what they SHOULD be. Aaaaah, the joys of relative perception.

Why don't you change your posting name? Just reverse the letters.
