Free agency begins...Oilers sign Fayne and Pouliot

The Dallas Stars got a jump on the rest of the NHL when they acquired Jason Spezza and Ludvig Karlsson for Alec Chiasson, Alex Guptill, Nicholas Paul and 2nd round pick in 2015.

The West continues to get stronger, and if the Oilers plan to become competitive in two years they must develop Leon Draisaitl correctly. You need elite centres, two of them, to compete in the western conference.

The Oilers won't get an elite centre in free agency, but they will try to find some quality veterans to help the Oilers young core become more competitive.

BREAKING...Oilers sign Mark Fayne to a four-year deal at $3.5 million/year and Benoit Pouliot for five years at $4 mill/year.

Former Oiler, Ales Hemsky, signs in Dallas for three years at $4 million/year

Oilers sign Keith Aulie to a one-year deal. Good depth guy. He can be a #6/7 and it is better that he sits in the pressbox instead of a young D-man.

The Oilers will try to land a centre, a 3rd line left winger a 4th line right winger and some D-men.

They will go after players like Legwand, Goc, Grabovski, Jokinen, Boyle, Kulemin, Pouliot, Winnik, Fayne, Engelland, Stralman and Dan Boyle.

If they can land two of those players that would be a good day, if they get three would very good. We'll see what happens.

We will update you as the day unfolds.

Also, before we get to hockey I'd like to say Happy 147th birthday to The True North Strong and Free. I'm extremely lucky to have been born in this great country and make sure you celebrate our great Nation today.

BrdvKyfCAAEtdTE

QUICK HITS...

  • With Dallas trading for Spezza, this puts even more pressure on St.Louis to try and sign Stastny. I like Stastny a lot, but if he gets $7mill/year that is huge money for a guy who is a great 2nd line centre.

  • Jarome Iginla and the Bruins might have to part ways because the Bs have limited cap space. Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Colorado and Detroit are interested. The Avs really like Iginla and want his experience and if they lose out on Stastny, which seems likely, they could go hard after Iggy.

  • Dave Bolland is my pick for biggest overpayment. Who is yours?

SIGNINGS BEGIN...

  • Penguins sign Ehrhoff for one year at $4 million. Good signing for Pens, especially with Maatta coming off shoulder surgery.
  • Manny Malhotra signs a one year, $850,000 deal with Montreal. Malhotra continues to be a great feel good story....
  • Mark Fayne at four years $3.5 million is a solid signing, but I don't see him more than a #4 long term. The most important part of this signing is that means the Oilers don't have to rush their young D-men.
  • Pouliot's five years concerns me. Time will tell, but that money for five years could be an issue in the future. He has played on five teams in five years. The Oilers needed a proven NHL player and he is that, but five years is major risk, IMO. Pouliot is a former #4 overall pick, so he does have some skill. I like that he is very aggressive on the forecheck and he will give the Oilers a good puck retriever.

The negatively towards "allthingsOilers " is just as bad as the Kool Aid drinking, glass heel wearing fan boys, that also comment here.

If you are not an Oilers fan, (and you can't be if you hate everything they do, and every move they make.) Or, only call call yourself one for what they did 24+ years ago and/or geography. Then why come here? To be negative all the time?

I am sure that there are more productive things that a rising star of the NHL General managers guild could be doing.

Oiler Domination To Follow

I agree 100%. If you hate the oilers management, hate the coaches, the roster and all the new players that join the team...

How can you call yourself an Oilers fan?

Seems like we have a ton of DSFs on steroids posting negative comments on a regular basis.

EDIT: So you needed Engelland to get to the floor? Why not just sign him for ONE year instead of 3?

In more former Oiler news, Dubnyk signs with the Coyotes on a one year deal for $800 000.

I'm happy for him as he seemed like a nice enough chap who just had a career meltdown on an epic scale. Hope he gets it back on track.

You put the "ass" in "classless".

What is annoying is people who have not figured out that the word "retard" is really not acceptable in most circles.

Today Dallas & St-Louis just got better, if that was ever possible... The Oilers got deeper. That's it. Oilers can achieve .500 in 2014-15 but in the western conference that means jack. The Oilers either have to sign a huge D or get lucky with the development of a few key rookies. No playoffs again but a #9 or #10 overall would be a significant improvement. Always exciting for us fans!

$2 M for 1 year for Brad Richards? To the Hawks?

Best deal of the day.

On the other hand, they're now $2.2M over the cap. Other shoe has to drop via trade/waiver/buy-out. I think MacT needs to get on the phone with CHI and try to pry out Hjalmarsson

Guessing there were not too many teams that he would have signed with for that money. Certainly a bargain. Hawks might be a good fit for his game.

Will see if the "promise" made to Sharp's agent not to trade him holds true. There are going to be some bargains once people understand where they are in terms of the "cap". Like you said, something has to give.

Solid pickups by MacT. Pouliot and Fayne have both been deep in the playoffs recently. Purcell and Nikitin have also been to the playoffs recently and all 4 players are still in their 20s and address the teams lack of size. Aulie is huge and only 25. At worste he'll help buy klefbom/marincin a half season in the AHL before jumping back up to the show.

7 years, $40.25 or $5.75M/yr AAV Niskanen to WAS to be with Ovechkin.

Expect a trade of Green or another D to drop their cap committments since they overpaid on Orpik ($5.5) already.

MacT did a good job today. He signed players with size and real NHL experience which the Oilers desperately needed. The term and price for Fayne and Pouliot was also very good. Comparable free agents seemed to have gotten similar dollars and term on their deals.

While these deals will make the Oilers better they are still a long way from making the playoffs in the big bad west. Fayne, Pouliot, Nikitin, and Purcell make them more competitive but they do not make the Oilers a playoff team. Just look at their competition:

La Kings - Reigning champs added Gaborik Chicago Blackhawks - 2 cups in 4 years Anaheim - Added Kesler San Jose - Perrenial Contender Colorado - Lost Stastny but added Iggy Minnesota - Added Vanek Vancouver - Added Miller St. Louis - Added Stastny Dallas - Added Spezza and Hemsky

There is a massive talent gap already between these teams and the Oilers, and all their competitors got better today. To stand a chance in the West the Oilers still need a #1 D, and a #1/2 C to guide Nuge and Draistl. Yakupov, Klefbom, Nurse, and Marincin will also need to improve and develop.

It's a shame, because the Oilers look like a playoff team in the East, but the West is just too good right now. MacT is doing a good job and we are slowly getting better. If we continue down this road we should be playoff team for a long time in 2-3 years.

Yukon Jack had a great rant about the words people choose to take offence at. I have mentally handicapped relatives, but am not offended by r'tard when used to describe a non-handicapped person who chooses not to use their brain. Look up the term 'idiot' and you'll see that there was a time when it was used to describe someone who was mentally handicapped. We 'choose' to not be offended by that but, my god, heaven forbid you use the r-word to describe someone who fails to think something through.

If I ever hear someone use that 'r'-word against someone with a true mental handicap, I'll be the first to tear them a new one, but for god's sake, grow up and understand context when words are used.

Just listened to the Mac-T's presser, he is still in search mode for a Center. More changes are coming. Gotta give credit to him, he has done more in a very short time (and I believe to the betterment of the team) than any other Management personnel for the last how many years! Good stuff and it definitely feels good to be a Oil fan today. For the nay-sayers, you guys suck today and not the Oil.

OK now, I'm gonna rain on everybody's parade and get a ton of trashes. Pouliot for five years IS the worst contract of the day. It will make the Eric Bélanger contract look good. I have seen Pouliot play (second team I follow is the Habs) and believe me, he's a 3rd liner who doesn't bring it every night. That's worth 4mil a year???? Talk about cashing in on your team's playoff success.

This is the time of year when your team can do no wrong. I remember people here being excited by Bélanger / Eager / Barker a few years ago. I also remember this winter some folks tought 1.85 m / year was an overpay for Hendricks. It looks like a bargain now.

I think Wanye got his goat of the year.

Kesler is slipping, the Anaheim could arguably make Anaheim worse.

Vancouver is rebuilding. They can't compete with the big boys. Miller is worse the Schneider better then Luongo.

San Jose I wonder when the end is near. They got to get a defenseman.

ST. Louis got exactly what they needed.

Colorado is the same. Loose Stastny add Iggy. Similar ppg last year, they just saved 1.5 million.

Minny and Dallas I hate. Just not fair to ad Spezza for nothing, and Vanek makes Minny scary.

No doubt it is a crazy tough conference. But there could be a couple of cracks.

I think San Jose could be teetering on the edge.

Vancouver added a veteran Goalie, but also a guy who is known as a locker room distraction IF things start going south.

Colorado did not really address their blue line. Very nice forwards but Stastny > Iggy at this point.

Oilers in very tough for sure. But the times are (hopefully) a-changin'.

So, according to you and Moron Jack... it's ok to use the "N" word in public, just as long as it's not directed to your Black Relatives and only if it's directed at other people who are not Black.

You two are the definition of "Idiots".

how do you figure that? They have the same meaning. Who decides these things, you and your friends?

Toughen up, or cut yourself off from all media. The faux urbane, sanctimonious, chronically offended bit is old.

what about gay as happy? Is that alright or should it also be banned because your delicate sensibilities can't handle it?

Yikes. If you truly feel that using any label on a minority, perceived or not, in a negative context is appropriate, then I encourage you to please use your given name as a descriptor the next time something terrible happens. For example: "somebody punched me in the nose for being a narrow-minded a-hole, that was really effing (insert your name here)....

"I am not PC or thin-skinned"---> evidently you are, despite your disclaimer.

I suppose if I say the "n-word" is offensive, that I am PC and thin skinned too?

Again, if stating my opinion makes me a bad guy - so be it. If you approve of those words that is your prerogative.

Fill your boots.

When you compare the Pouliot contract to those given Raymond and Perault it looks like MacT made a massive overpayment. Market was calling for 3 x 3 and the Oilers paid 4 x 5. That's about $11M too much.

When you add in Hendricks, Nikitin and Pouliot, each overpaid by about $1M, we are talking about not being able to add a solid line player second pairing defender because MacT wasting cap space.

When you next hear depth is a problem for the Oilers, remember that.

the guy couldn't make it in Calgary or Toronto but suddenly he'll fit right in Edmonton huh?

He's a number 7 for one year at 800k. Really? You have an issue with this signing?

You can be as offended as you want to be. Just don't expect everyone to conform to your whims.

And if you need to call out others with sanctimonious outrage to make yourself feel righteous, then expect backlash.

Not everyone is down with heavy handed censorship to appease the shrill pious types.

I thought Kulemin would be a perfect fit for Edmonton a good 2-way forward , also he would help Yakupov learning curve.

Mact d/n mention Yakupov in his pressor. My guess they will be trading Yakupov

So 'moron' is ok but retard isn't? Lol good one. Now for a question, if black people can call each other the N word, which they do on a regular basis, why can't white people?

Oh yeah and back to hockey MacT is soooo much more refreshing than Tambo. And I like his signings today, little long in term with Pouliot, but market prob dictated that

Because I disagree with you, I am pious and sanctimonious? How hypocritical of you.

I am not expecting anyone to conform. But don't be shocked if you get called on it if you use the word "retard" or drop n-bombs. I disagree with it but I can't control how you think or speak.
