NHL EQUIVALENCIES FOR TRAINING CAMP HOPEFULS (F)

The Edmonton Oilers will have a job opening or two this fall, and it could go to one of their young players. A chance at center, or on the wing, might be filled by an unexpected source. One of the first things we should look at is offense—can these kids score enough to hang around? NHL Equivalencies can help us suss out the quality offensive prospects.

NHL Equivalencies

I normally use two sources, Gabriel Desjardins and Rob Vollman. Desjardins' version of equivalencies have been around for over a decade and are the standard. Rob Vollman's came to the forefront after his Hockey Abstract book was released last summer. For our purposes, I'll use .3 for the CHL, and Vollman's guide for college, AHL and Europe.

NHLE'S FORWARDS (per 82gp)

  1. Leon Draisaitl 15-25-40 (jr)
  2. Greg Chase 12-18-30 (jr)
  3. Tyler Pitlick 9-16-25
  4. Bogdan Yakimov 14-9-23  (khl)
  5. Iiro Pakarinen 15-7-22 (sml)
  6. Mitch Moroz 12-10-22 (jr)
  7. Marco Roy 9-13-22 (jr)
  8. Steve Pinizzotto 9-9-18
  9. Jujhar Khaira 7-11-18 (jr)
  10. Curtis Hamilton 8-8-16
  11. Andrew Miller 4-12-16

(AHL players in bold)

The best players by this metric are two teenagers (Draisaitl and Chase) but Tyler Pitlick was healthy and effective enough to show up in a good spot this season (Vollman suggests that 19-22 year olds in the AHL should have an increased equivalency based on prospect history).

Bogdan Yakimov's NHLE is skewed, he played only 9.5 minutes a game in the KHL while still compiling the numbers above. If we added 5 minutes, he'd be a little behind Draisaitl on this list.

I expect Draisaitl, Pitlick and Pinizzotto are the most likely players on this list to play in the NHL next season, but the real fun is going to be in the AHL. There's a fascinating group of young men turning pro this fall (Yakimov, Moroz, Khaira, possibly Draisaitl) and tracking their progress in Oklahoma City is going to be a blast.

The most interesting prospect is Bogdan Yakimov. With size and strength and the wanting to be an NHLer. This young man could be the biggest surprise this upcoming season. The one thing the OIlers haven't had in a long time is a long shot making a difference. Very positive indeed.

To me one of the most intresting prospects is Khaira. I watched him play a few games last season for OKC and reminded me of Kesler in a lot of ways. I honestly believe this is going to be a player Oil fans are going to love. Most likely could use another season on the AHL but he has the size to possibly compete for the NHL earlier then people think.

The Oilers are picking up these Jordan Nolan, Dwight King, Kyle Clifford type players. Khaira, Yakimov, Moroz are fitting the mold.

The only thing that Tamby did right was assembling a legit AHL and ECHL franchise...........I believe that this strategy will pay HUGE dividends for our prospects.

As much as I hate to give that dithering fool ( Tamby) any credit, he deserves credit for that!

Summer time, sun is shining, everyone is benefitting from lots of vitamin D and the optimism for the upcoming season is at an all time high. And rightly so. For the first time in ages we have a decent defense, we have prospects who are huge and we have tougher forwards. We have a decent D coach and HOPE so come on Oilers, let's get this show on the road and show the rest of the league that our rebuild is OFFICIALLY over.

    Oiler Domination To Follow

We are set at certain positions

Wingers: Hall, Eberle, Perron, Yakupov, Purcell, Pouliot, Hendricks

Defense: Petry, Marincin, Schulrz, Nikitin, Fayne, Ference, Nurse, Klefbom

Just need to add to the Center depth and we should become competitive again.

If one of Yakimov, Khaira, Moroz, Chase pan out, this infinibuild might finally end.

I really like Khaira. Saw him play a couple of times against the Winterhawks here in PDX. I also had the good fortune of meeting him in Everett during one of my son's tournaments.

He is a very nice, well spoken kid. Also, being Indian myself, I had no idea we grew them that big :). If he can translate his WHL game to the NHL, then he will fill a great need for the Oilers.

Well it's JULY, but I guess you are expecting articles on the line-ups from the last game, or the win/loss streak from the last 10 games, or the developement of one of the Barons top performers this month, or Scrivens performance last game. If you don't like reading about the oilers until the season starts then see ya in October. ?????

Drisaitl & Yakimov are going to be our #2-3 centres maybe even push Nuge for that #1 that's got me pretty dam giddy thinking about that possibility!!! The size these two have is impressive. Khaira is going to be close too and he's still growing. Pacific Division here we come!

Hey Lowetide, what do you think the chances are that one of the wingers can play center? I hate that we're in a situation where MacT and company should consider it, but in this it has to be looked at as an option.

Sure hope Draisaitl, Khaira, Yakimov etc develop quickly seeing how weak this team is up the middle

Moving a winger to center only makes sense if it was Hall. So lets leave that one alone.

Little upset about the CHED deal today. l am sad we have to listen to Michael's college football stories in the middle of a play. Very disappointed in the announcement. I can't tell ya how many times I've swarn at the radio when hes blabbering about something, not calling the game. I have read enough blogs to know I am not the only person who feels this way, and frankly wish he'd give up the WWF schtick. There are better guys out there, why pizz off Oiler fans.

Michael's is replacing Tenser as the most despised member of the Oiler's hockey crew.

I know Ched is dead without Oilers Hockey, but please fix the radio personalities.

I'd take Principe calling games, and hes brutal.

When I look at the prospects, especially those on the cusp of the team, I can't help but look at Jones, Eager, MacIntyre and to a lesser extent Fraser. We have signed and used these kind of players for far too long, and as much as I loved Jonesy, it's time to wave goodbye. I hope number 28 gets an offer, and I wish the others all the best, but it is time to move ahead, and these guys are not part of the equation. Sad, but what is right for the team stings for others. We have a good mix of players now, a stable full of prospects and a fan base that has no equal ANYWHERE in the NHL. Welcome to the end of purgatory Oilers' fans. THIS is the beginning of the end.......The glass is now half full - not half empty.

So you're sayin we're half way there?! lol Just kidding great post.

Lots of optimism out there right now as there seems to be around this time. I'm not sure how this season will play out but I think a bump up the standings to about 9th-10th in the West is a possibility this year. I think we are 1 year away from truly reaping the benefits of the developmental system and seeing playoffs. But can see a way more competitive team this year. Barring injuries to key positions... because if RNH goes down it's not gonna be pretty.

Yeah kept me entertained, and I too am very interested to see how 2C and 4RW pan out. Less so the 2C because that seems to have the same feel as last summer's vacancy... Fill it from within, and we all know that went over like a lead balloon. So I'm expecting that to be an uphill battle even if a surprise rookie makes the team; 2C really is a journeyman position simple as that (if only we had a journeyman).

I'm looking forward to see how the 4RW pans out as a mini entertainment section within the team as we likely face another year of no playoffs. It will be the first time in a while where a few young guys will have to compete for a role player position (instead of whatever we had at the time just being dropped there). I'll be routing for Pitlick but if he doesn't land the spot that will likely mean some other young energy player has emerged instead, and then I'll be routing for that player X anyway. Everyone always likes the heart on the sleeve energy players, and I think we will very likely see one materialize in the 4RW position this year.

Slow down everyone, we have all been here the last 8 years. Let's just wait to see how the oil do once the big boy games start. Our centre position is still a joke regardless if a young guy make it. Unless some young kid as mentioned above makes a stellar contribution next year I fear it will be the same old story. History shows doe new kid won't be stellar. Just saying.

Playing an 18 year old in an impact role, and adding a couple depth dman and depth wingers. Have you seen that story before?

I can already see it: Yakimov to Yakupov, back to Yakimov and back again to Yakupov with the one-timer and he scooooores! :)

It would be a dream if Yakimov and Draisaitl turn out to be really good NHL players. A lineup with your Centers being Nuge, the Deutschland Dangler and Yakimov would be terrific.

At this juncture it appears the Oilers may well start the season with Draisaitl (Drei) in the #2C or #3C role. If that hapeens, what are reasonable expectations for him stat wise? I emphasize reasonable.

"Deutschland Dangler"? What about Action Saxon, or Leon the Hun? The Teutonic Plague? The Cologne Cyclone?

    OMG Lowe just stepped down!

welllll kidding, but pretty much that is the only news we are missing at this point.

really really psyched reading about the size coming up the ranks.

    Draisaitl 6'2 204 Khaira 6'3 208 Yakimov 6'5 202 Chase 6'0 200

that said - this article makes me feel even more strongly that we need to deal for a #2C for this season.

Gordon is 30 and will be a step slower as our team truly hits its stride. depth at C is just worth getting, NOW.

We need some major break thru of our draftees in order to get competitive , and this season might deliver some with size as a plus . We also need regular squad to have a lot better season as well . If not we will be fighting Nashville , Calgary and Winnipeg for basement of our conference once again . We have improved with current additions but the rest are going to have to have banner years to be competitive with most in our conference .

Surprised Yakimov is looking good so Impressed with Khaira , Draisaitl , Nurse , Chase . and Moroz .

Currently my expectations will be low if we go into season with Landers and Arco as centers and if Draisaitl unable to make the transition to NHL level this year . Draisaitl seems to be a fast leaner as his past shows one year followed by doubling his points total in the second . doubt he will have a second year downturn like some have .

Would be fitting if one of writers for ON did a take/breakdown on all our teams in entire Western conference and division . Maybe one every second day for a month . Finish it off with how Oilers stack up against each team as they are presented . Could do a second month with Eastern Division teams for that matter .

SURVEY : CHEERS for yes , TRASH it for no if interested in something like this .
