Losing and the long walk through hell

Saturday night after the Oilers lost to the Blackhawks, I witnessed an event that unfortunately we have seen here too often and one that I have been on the receiving end of. Oilers fans loudly booed the players the last minute of the game and it did not stop there.

What a difference a full off-season of working out can do for a player, especially a young one. The Nuge has evolved this season into a much different player. Most of the change has come through his physical development.

There is no shortage of talented forwards for Eakins to run for the power play. The additions of Purcell, Pouliot and Draisaitl have really bolstered the pool of talent he can choose from. Fitting the pieces together, creating a dangerous, above average and momentum building power play is the challenge for Eakins.

The Oilers iced a thin lineup in Vancouver. Many of their top players were not playing. Hall, Nuge, Pouliot, Fayne, Perron sat out. Although we knew this was coming from Eakins comments Thursday post game, I was still surprised and left scratching my head at the decision.

Where does Yak fit?

Nail Yakupov is the wild card the Oilers have up their sleeve. The problem is they don’t really know what kind of a wild card he is. He could be a strong offensive force and be a legit NHL scoring weapon. He could also be a streaky player with defensive lapses like we saw last season.
