When Craig Mactavish took over as Oilers GM he said the Oilers needed to be harder to play against. Move by move he is slowly grinding this Oiler team in that direction.

Last week, young Oilers defender Martin Marincin was a surprise addition to Slovakia's hockey team going to Sochi for the Olympics. What a great feeling that must have been for him! The soon to be Olympian will turn twenty-two during the Olympics. The Olympics are huge for Europeans. After playing in three different European countries I can tell you people love to talk about past athletes that have represented their countries proudly. He and his family must be very excited.

Filling an Oilers Need

As I have watched the Oilers this season the areas of weakness for this club have been obvious. They are not built to compete with big teams that like to play heavy in the corners and in front of the net.

The defense is full of players suited for second and third pairing roles. Players like Petry and Ference are being asked to play as first pairing guys. This is a tall order for players like this at the best of times and even harder when your group's commitment to playing defense is average at best.

The Issues with the Power Play

From the outside looking in, a person would think that if you throw the skill the Oilers have on the ice, scoring with the man advantage would be easy. At times this season the PP has looked good. I would say it has been very streaky.

As of Saturday night the Oilers’ power play percentage is at 18.8%. That puts them at 13th in the league. They are a full ten percentage points higher at home, 23.7% compared to on the road, 13.8%.
