I get asked all the time what is the most important skill for a young hockey player to master. I have spoken to many experts in this area and they confirmed my own opinion. Skating is the answer. I have always believed if a player can skate, get around the ice quickly and efficiently they have a chance to contribute to the game.
I am starting to think that there is another skill that is not above skating but right below it in terms of importance. On-ice awareness.

Last week the NHL made another in a line of "last offers" to the NHLPA. From what has been leaked to various media outlets, this has been the most complete offer I have seen. In the past, the offers have focused mainly on the "make whole" provision or the various ways to curtail player contracting rights. This is natural because they are the biggest issues between the two sides.

It is a pretty rare thing for me to get jealous of professional athletes. Guys getting big contracts, scoring big goals or even dating a super model never got me envious. However I am jealous of the group of players that will represent Canada at this year's Spengler Cup tournament in Davos, Switzerland.

Ryan Smyth came to the Oilers in the 1994 draft with the sixth overall pick. He is currently sitting at just over 1150 games and 800 points. Not too shabby.
That is a nice little career he has built for himself. Nearly a hundred playoff games in the NHL and he has skated for Canada many times with the highlight being the 2002 gold medal in Salt Lake City. What an event to have been a part of!
