At this time two years ago, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi pretty much had the Edmonton Oilers marquee all to themselves. They were marketed as the future faces of the franchise.

For as long as I've called Edmonton home, which is going on 24 years, the last ride down the road in whatever noisy, too-fast, only-on-sunny days ride I've owned before I reluctantly tucked it away in the garage before the snow flew has marked the official start of the NHL season for me.

It's been all talk and little or no action, at least at the NHL level, while we wait for Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr to sort things out, but the consolation is some of the gab we've been getting over the past few days has a hopeful and common sense ring to it.

Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz doesn't give a crap about what people think about him. He's a billionaire. A BILLIONAIRE. I laughed out loud when I read a comment to that effect on Twitter last night. Alas, it's true.

The stance by some citizens in this city seems to be that any member of the media who supports putting more money on the table to help build an arena in partnership with Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz should be dismissed as a mouthpiece or a fartcatcher.
