So, the Edmonton Oilers traded goaltender Ben Scrivens, a young man who is the dictionary definition of a model citizen, to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Zack Kassian, who is without question something less than that. The Oilers traded a good guy for a bad guy. What are we to make of this?

I don’t know about you, but when I look at the Edmonton Oilers over the last 20 years, I can count the number of the defensemen with the same level of offensive skill as Lubomir Visnovsky on one hand – Chris Pronger, Ryan Whitney, Janne Niinimaa, Roman Hamrlik and Boris Mironov.

You can call it grasping for the silver lining if you like, but the Edmonton Oilers will be playing meaningful games as we ring in the New Year Jan. 1 for the first time in a long time. The way I see things shaping up, that could be the case well into 2016.

The Edmonton Oilers needed the kind of performance they got from Cam Talbot against the Boston Bruins at the TD Garden to kick-off a four-game road trip Monday. Likewise, Talbot needed exactly the kind of performance he delivered in a 3-2 overtime win.
