I wasn’t expecting the Edmonton Oilers to actually beat the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center Thursday, but after coach Todd Nelson publicly challenged his team, I didn’t expect an 8-2 embarrassment on the heels of the 5-1 drubbing they took in Anaheim the night before.

When they’ve been healthy, the combination of Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle has been the default option as the top line for the Edmonton Oilers for as long as they’ve been together on the roster. They’ve been the go-to trio. What if that changed?

I don’t know about you, but I found myself fixated on Nikita Nikitin as he lurched around the ice shift after shift for the Edmonton Oilers on the way to a 4-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets at Rexall Place Monday. I was half-expecting a leg or an arm to fall off. Thankfully, no.

The saying “hindsight is 20-20” holds a lot of truth for me. That’s why, knowing what I know now, I believe the NHL absolutely has to take the hit Nazem Kadri of the Toronto Maple Leafs made on Edmonton Oiler Matt Fraser Monday out of the game. Why I felt ill as I watched Fraser struggle to his feet.

In a city where the Edmonton Oilers have been selling hope for what seems like forever, one of the many leaps of faith fans were asked to take was that Ben Scrivens could provide owner Daryl Katz’s sad-sack doormats the kind of goaltending that would at least give them a chance to compete.
