The NHL renamed its divisions and conferences for the new season, but changing names didn’t change the fact the Oilers were no longer even a shadow of the team that won the 1990 Stanley Cup and would be lousy again in missing the playoffs for the second season in a row.

It didn’t take Connor McDavid very long into his rookie season with the Edmonton Oilers to live up to all the hype and hoopla surrounding his entry into the NHL. That’s saying a mouthful, considering the superlatives pundits were using before the kid even played his first game.

All things being equal, which they very seldom are, when it comes to assessing players, I’ve always preferred guys with a high degree of bite and physical edge to their game over those who don’t provide the same blood-and-guts dimensions. “Softer” players, if you will, although that word tends to send some observers into a tizzy.

I’ve got to admit, Rexall Place never felt like home to me. It didn’t the first time I walked into it back in 1989. It won’t the last time I walk out of it and it didn’t in the 27 years in between. Great memories? Sure. Moments I’ll never forget? Absolutely. But I always felt like a guest. A visitor.

There’s a handful of players on this list who worked their backsides off and did whatever it takes just to make it to the NHL. Steve Staios, who spent 573 games with the Edmonton Oilers during an NHL career that spanned 1,001 games, might be the poster boy for all of them.
