With a 14-10-4 record for 32 points through 28 games, the Edmonton Oilers are off to their best start in a decade, since they got out of the gate at a 16-10-2 clip for 34 points in 2006-07. So why is there so much angst and consternation in Oiler Country?

There’s a handful of players on this Top 100 list who made it based on what I saw, on the ice and off it, as opposed to the raw numbers they amassed during their time with the Edmonton Oilers. Adam Graves, who played a key role in Edmonton’s fifth Stanley Cup win in 1990 as a member of the Kid Line, is one of those players.

The first meeting between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 1 this season was hyped as a showdown between blue-chippers Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews, the first overall picks in the 2015 and 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
McDavid and Matthews instead got upstaged at the Air Canada Centre by Nazem Kadri, who stole the show. Kadri not only drove McDavid to distraction in a way that would make Esa Tikkanen proud, he scored two goals, including the winner 12 seconds into overtime, as the Maple Leafs beat the Oilers 3-2.

I’ve long believed trying to sell NHL hockey in the greater Phoenix area is destined to fail, and it’s been mostly that in terms of fan support over the last decade. Now, there’s talk about building a second arena for the Arizona Coyotes despite the fact their current home, Gila River Arena, isn’t even 15 years old.
