A new rink. A new season. New faces. And, of course, a new sense of optimism for long-suffering fans who’ve been counting the days since last season ended. Absolutely no surprise there, and as the Edmonton Oilers take to the ice at Rogers Place for their second day of their 2016 training camp today, that’s the way it should be.

Watching Team North America fly around the ice like a bunch of hot-wired Ferraris and Lamborghinis at the World Championship of Hockey these last few days has been nothing short of a treat. No more so than Wednesday’s crowd-pleasing 4-3 overtime win over Team Sweden.

There’s no such thing as having too much depth or too much competition for jobs at any position in professional sports, so there’s absolutely no downside to the potential addition of Kris Versteeg by the Edmonton Oilers by way of a PTO. If he shines and earns a contract, fine. If not, thanks for coming.

Mike Comrie’s time with the Edmonton Oilers seemed scripted like one of those feel-good flicks where the local boy comes home and makes good. While it started out that way midway through the 2000-01 NHL season, it played out with more plot twists than a soap opera -- complete with heroes, villains and intrigue, not to mention an unlikely encore, by the time it was done.
