One of the biggest improvements the Oilers have made this season is their ability to be competitive after a poor outing. There hasn't been many games this season where the Oilers were completely outclassed, but Tuesday in Columbus the Oilers were overwhelmed.

They will look to rebound tonight in Boston, against a good, but not great, Bruins team.

The Oilers skate to Columbus looking to hand the Blue Jackets their first loss since November 26th. The Jackets have won 15 straight and they've outscored their opponents 59-26 during this incredible run. Their 3-1 victory over the Oilers on December 13th in Edmonton was the seventh of the streak, and the Oilers will try to avoid becoming the second team to lose twice during Columbus' dominant six weeks.

The Edmonton Oilers exit the Christmas break in second place in the Pacific Division and fifth spot in the Western Conference. They are hanging with the top teams, and as they continue their push towards the playoffs they will try to improve their divisional record.

The Oilers are 5-3-2 versus Pacific division foes, a massive improvement from previous seasons when they went 9-15-5 last year (4-21-4 in 2014/2015 and 8-17-3 three years ago), but they still need to improve within the division to make the playoffs.

They host the Kings tonight and the Canucks on Saturday, and both times their opponents will be playing on the second night of back-to-back games.

The Kings are without their starting goalie Jonathan Quick, and their second leading scorer Tyler Toffoli. Edmonton needs to take advantage or depleted team who lost 2-1 in Vancouver last night.

Sekera, Puljujarvi, Caggiula and a BIG thank you

The Oilers were back on the ice after a four-day Christmas break, but Andrej Sekera was noticeably absent. Sekera blocked a shot on his foot late in the San Jose game, and if he's out any period of time it would be a huge blow.

The Oilers defence has been able to play well despite injuries to Darnell Nurse, Brandon Davidson, Mark Fayne, Kris Russell and Eric Gryba and various times, but Sekera has been their best D-man all season and he'll be very hard to replace. After practice, Todd McLellan said Sekera reported back from the Christmas break feeling under the weather and they will see how he feels tomorrow.
