Monday Musings: Offside!

What a dumb rule.

Kassian's skate was off the ice, but on top of the line and it was still ruled offside. Of course the linesman didn't pick that up in real time, and considering Kassian's foot was on the line, I understand why he didn't call it offiside in the split second he had to decipher all the information.

I'm constantly amazed more fans haven't been turned off by the NHL. The league is hell-bent on making the game less enjoyable by the day.

The Oilers will play their eighth game in 13 nights tonight in Minnesota, fresh off a crushing 6-5 loss in Philadelphia last night. Sometimes the schedule maker is not your friend. Some Oilers could be skating on fumes, while Wild players should be very fresh playing only their fifth game in 13 nights.

The Oilers will have to play poised and smart, which wasn't the case last night.

The Oilers skate into Philadelphia with the Flyers riding a six-game winning streak. Steve Mason has started five in a row, allowing only nine goals and stopping 162 of 171 shots (.947sv%). He's been great and the Flyers are on a roll.

The Oilers, despite many expressing massive concerns, are 5-2-3 in their last ten games. They've accumulated 13 points, while the Flyers, 7-3-0, have 14 in their previous ten.

The Flyers have 33 points this season while the Oilers have 32. These teams are evenly matched.

Searching for consistency

Inconsistency

The Oilers find themselves in first place in the Pacific division, although San Jose has three games in hand and is one point behind, yet they have only won five of 12 games versus the eight weakest teams in the NHL.

The Oilers are 9-6-1 versus the top 21 teams in the standings.

It seems they play to the level of their competition. They've dominated Chicago, Washington and St.Louis, yet they've been unable to defeat Toronto, Buffalo or Arizona in six contests.

The standings in both conferences are very tight, and if the Oilers continue to struggle against the bottom teams it could cost them a playoff berth.

The Buffalo Sabres are banged up, especially on the backend. Josh Gorges has a non-displaced fracture in his foot, Dmitri Kulikov has a bruised back, Zack Bogosian has a strained MCL and Taylor Fedun is day-to-day.

Jack Eichel was labouring last night in the Sabres' 3-2 OT loss to Washington, and while he said he was okay this morning, he clearly isn't 100%. They also have forwards Tyler Ennis and Cody McCormick on the sidelines.

The Oilers play their first of three games in four nights this evening, and taking advantage of an injury-riddled Sabres team playing on back-to-back nights is a must.
