Strong Debut Seasons

I love old time photos. This one features the great Gordie Howe in the middle, a young Bryan "Bugsy" Watson (who would one day coach our beloved Oilers) on the right and young Ray Cullen on the left. This photo is from 1966-68. One of the best things about following a team is watching the young players develop; Cullen had the better pedigree and was a better offensive prospect but it was Watson who had the longer NHL career. On the current Oilers roster, who are the keepers? The throwaways? The career minor leaguers? It's always been tough to say.

Happy 50th to the kid in this photo. And thanks. For everything. I wouldn't have believed it unless I was there to see it.

Hockey rumors have become big business on the internet. Some yahoo in Philadelphia makes gobs of coin (apparently) by tapping into that small segment of the population that has been assigned to make certain the words of P. T. Barnum live on (those words being "there's a sucker born every minute,") However, when the big boys start talking about dealing Hemsky and Penner, I believe where there's smoke there's fire.

This is Adam Larsson. He is the number one rated prospect for the 2011 NHL Entry draft at this time. The Edmonton Oilers may have a shot at selecting him this summer, something that wasn't in the conversation just days ago. Jacques Lemaire's defensive hockey is starting to work in the New Jersey swamps, and it may benefit the Oilers in a big way. The question then becomes "will the Oilers take a defenseman #1 overall?"

Jeff Petry's independent scouting reports never matched the over the top verbal coming from the Oilers. That disconnect caused some of us (well, me) to miss the boat in regard to the long, tall Michigander. It's time to call uncle, because this kid would appear to have the toolkit, the brain and the desire.
