As the Edmonton Oilers enter the back half of the 2016-17 season, it’s going to be worth watching how they handle a number of prospects currently in the AHL. Most of the team’s significant minor-leaguers are in their last season of waiver exemption—which means it’s either impress now, or go into training camp next fall as an outsider.

Earlier this week, I wrote about how the expansion draft may offer the Edmonton Oilers an opportunity to shed a contract. The club’s somewhat unique positioning offers it a chance to do something else, though, too: Acquire a player from a team that will have trouble protecting all its forwards.

On Wednesday morning, the San Jose Sharks placed winger Matt Nieto on waivers. Nieto, a jack-of-all-trades player who is only 24 years old was a top-nine forward for current Oilers coach Todd McLellan during their time together in San Jose.
In this week’s edition of What Would You Do Wednesday, we ask whether Edmonton should reunite Nieto with the coach under whom he had his best years.

Taylor Beck, we hardly knew you. On Monday, the Edmonton Oilers re-assigned Beck to the AHL, making room for the recall of Anton Lander from Bakersfield.

When the Vegas Golden Knights make their selection from the Edmonton Oilers at this summer’s expansion draft, my guess is that it will be one of two players: Benoit Pouliot or Mark Fayne.
Superficially, neither is an ideal pick for Vegas, but Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli has the ability to make such a choice worthwhile for the Knights, and presumably he also has the motivation.
