It was a bizarre game last night, in a lot of ways. Both teams had power plays that were given a lot of rope by some extremely giving referees, and until Gagner scored on a 4-on-3 in overtime both teams were wildly ineffective on the man advantage. The goalies were superb. I really didn’t want to go back and review the refereeing again; seeing it once was enough (for me, and for both teams judging by their reactions).
Instead, I thought I’d highlight one of Mark Fistric’s big hits and how it impacted one shift.

Dave Lumley was a hard working role player who brought grit, checking and some skill to the Oilers bottom 6 forwards during the club's first 8 seasons in the NHL. He was a throwback, what used to be called a "holler guy" and drove the opposition to distraction.

I suspect every Oiler fan was five seconds away from losing their mind on the referees, after one of the worst officiated NHL games I've seen in years, but then in a span of four seconds Nail Yakupov, who was horrific at batting practice in Pittsburgh at the 2012 draft, did his best Jose Bautista and Theo Fleury impersonations and OilersNation went into hysterics.
I'm sure some fun sponge will claim Yakupov's celebration was over the top, but in a sport, and society, that has become incredibly politically correct it was a welcome change.

After facing the heaviest team in the NHL on Tuesday the Oilers face the 2nd heaviest team tonight. The LA Kings average weight is 210 pounds, and the only forwards shorter than 6'1" are Dustin Brown, 6'0", while Mike Richards and Brad Richardson stand 5'11". Richards and Brown are two of their most physical forwards, so the Oilers need to be ready to compete.
Tonight will be a great test to see how they bounce back from a disastrous first period against the Sharks.

News broke yesterday that the long tortured Edmonton Arena project has been finally been inked with City Council voting 10-3 to approve the deal. Says pumped up Mayor Mandel "At the end of the day, we will see an incredible development downtown that will change the face of the city. It’s 100 per cent. A deal is done. It will be the nicest, most dynamic arena you have ever been in.”
