So, Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini might be considering dipping into his depth on defence to facilitate a trade? Gosh, that had never occurred to me.

Flames general manager Darryl Sutter recently expressed mild concern about the potential dire consequences of having six of his players in contention for roster spots at the 2010 Olympics. He’s especially worried about the possibility of having one of his high-priced Canadian warriors – Jarome Iginla, Robyn Regehr, Dion Phaneuf and Jay Bouwmeester – go down during the upcoming summer camp, which will be held at the building formerly known as the Olympic Saddledome.

I’m unofficially on holidays, but before I completely vacate the sports scene for two weeks of golfing, drinking, hiking, drinking, sleeping, drinking, making four in the morning prank calls to Wanye, drinking, eating, ogling ladies, golfing and watching another buddy walk the plank, I realized there is only four weeks until the NHL is back.

The Post has learned that coach Tom Renney approached Messier last season about the possibility of working with the coaching staff this season. It also has been learned that Messier interviewed this summer for the vacant coaching position in Edmonton that ultimately went to Pat Quinn (with Renney as his associate).

The centre-ice position was not a strength for the Oilers last season.
