To hear Edmonton Oilers' president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe tell it, his team hasn't talked to Brent Sutter about taking over from Tom Renney as head coach. Not a conversation. Not a word.
I'm not going to call Lowe a liar – or even a fibber -- because I have no proof to contradict what he told reporters today at the Memorial Cup in Shawinigan when he was asked about Sutter and the vacancy behind his bench. Still, what Lowe said strikes me as odd, given the circumstances.

It would be a great thing for the Edmonton Oilers if they could add a stud defenseman, a true number one who plays heavy minutes on the back end, contributes offensively and shuts down the opposition’s best players. But it’s not a necessity right now.

If the Edmonton Oilers decide to make organizational need the primary criteria at this year’s NHL Entry Draft, they would be making a mistake.

After coaching his team to 30th and 29th place finishes, some will argue that Tom Renney didn't deserve a chance to lead the Oilers into their "next phase" of the rebuild. There might be some merit to that, but I'm not in that camp. When Steve Tambellini talked about needing more "compete" from his team, I got the sense he was saying that Renney wasn't getting/demanding that from his team.
I've said for years the Oilers, especially some veterans, have convinced themselves they were competing hard enough, when in fact they weren't, but by electing to push Renney out the door, didn't Tambellini just give his players another escape route?

One of my favorite songs is Then Came The Last Days of May by Blue Oyster Cult, not that I'd expect anybody under 40 to know that tune or the band, for that matter.
