Free agency is a time generally reserved for welcoming new players into the fold, as the Oilers and Canucks did, or for being excited about the possibility of signing a true difference maker, as fans of the Flames and Leafs can be tonight.
Still, it’s also a time for departure, and each of the four cities in the Nation Network lost at least one player to another team today.

In 2004 the Chicago Blackhawks drafted Cam Barker 3rd overall. With the Tigers he tallied, 47, 65 and 48 points in three full seasons, and today the Oilers signed him to a one-year deal worth $2.25 million.
Barker has played 271 games since entering the NHL with the Hawks in 2006. He has ten goals, 92 points and 263 PIMs in his career. So far he has been a disappointment, but like many D-men, you wonder if he will start to find his game now that he has turned 25.

Whoooooo boy. We thought the Photoshop Contest for the plans of the Oilers Brass was a great contest. But the entries for the Ryan Smyth Returning contest are even more epic if that is somehow possible. With a $94 gift card at Oodle Noodle Downtown up for grabs - one of the best places to eat on planet Earth as far as we are concerned - the entries were piling up in WanyeMail this week.
We were going to cap the finalists at 10 but extended it to 14. Why? Because we are drunk on power and potentially still drunk from Bud Lights, that's why.

The Oilers dipped into the free agent pool, and signed gritty veteran forward Ben Eager to a three-year deal, at a reported $1.1 million cap hit today. Eager is tenacious, at times unpredictable, and he's popular with the ladies in Vancouver; at least the one who flashed him during the playoffs.
