Cam Charron Takes Over Leafs Nation

So just over a year ago, Cam Charron was happily writing about hockey and other stuff on his personal blog. Then we came along with a modest proposal and an even more modest bribe and asked him if we wanted to contribute to our happy little network. Since then, he's done work for Canucks Army, NHLNumbers, The Vancouver Province and Backhand Shelf.

We've known for months that Steve Tambellini had a contract extension, so yesterday's announcement wasn't a surprise. The fact the presser was at a Casino was fitting because in many people's eyes, extending Tambellini was a huge gamble by the Oilers.

It seemed most fans and media wanted to know how long the extension was, my sources tell me it is a three-year deal, but I don't think the term matters that much.

If the Oilers don't improve this year, Tambellini won't be at the draft podium in June of 2013.

Nail Yakupov was in town Monday. Mikhail Grigorenko arrived last night. Ryan Murray will be here Friday. There's been no sign of Alex Galchenyuk in the City of Champions so far and there are no plans by the Edmonton Oilers to show him around Rexall Place or have him meet owner Daryl Katz.

Some of the very best men to wear an Oilers uniform have come to our city from the Quebec League. The first pick in Oilers NHL history (Kevin Lowe), high flying Ales Hemsky and the legendary Georges Laraque were all drafted from the QMJHL. Edmonton clearly has a Q player on their radar this season, too.

My reaction to the news of Steve Tambellini’s extension yesterday was mild disappointment. Mild because the Oilers have been telegraphing this move for months and it seemed inevitable long ago. Disappointment because I think it’s the wrong decision.
