Whether you ushered out 2011 at the stroke of midnight with a splash of champagne, spent a quiet evening with family or woke up this morning in a place unfamiliar without your trousers, wallet and stomach contents, here's hoping better things await fans of the Edmonton Oilers in 2012.

Well it’s the game we’ve all been waiting for, the showdown for top spot in Group B and the bye in the medal round. Or at least it was supposed to be. Canada held up their part of the rivalry agreement, but apparently someone forgot to deliver the memo to the U.S.
Instead, the New Years Eve game will mean nothing to the Canadians and has the makings of about as much excitement as Canada’s previous three games. That’s right; instead of the mighty obstacle the U.S. was pegged to be from the start, they are now nothing more than a stepping stone. Game time is 8:00 pm EST / 6:00 MST

This Oilers season is about returns and arrivials, and increasingly about the future. For management, huge decisions are on the horizon that will change the face of the franchise.

The 2011 calendar year has not been a great one for the Oilers or their fans. The Oilers only won 28 of the 82 games they've played so far, so the best part of today's early morning tilt (MST time) is that it will end a dreadful "year" of Oilers hockey. They went 28-46-8 over the past 364 days.
They started the year with a 2-1 loss at home to the Flames and it pretty much went downhill from there. The Oilers were 13-28-5 from January to April, and from October to today they've tallied a 15-18-3 record.
The major bright spot came on June 24th when they choose Ryan Nugent-Hopkins first overall, and he hasn't disappointed with an outstanding start to his NHL career, but the organization needs to make some major moves in 2012 if they hope to avoid another disappointing calendar year.

As 2011 draws to a close, should we really be surprised the Edmonton Oilers are fading fast in the Western Conference after a start to the season that had some fans convinced that happy days, and a playoff spot, were here again?
