When I think about players who were tough as nails and mean as hell, I think about Bobby Baun and Keith Magnuson and old-school guys from later days in this part of the hockey world like Kevin Lowe and Jason Smith. And I think about Ladislav Smid. That's right, Laddy Smid.

Taylor Hall must have a love-hate relationship when it comes to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has 2-5-7 in four career games v. the Jackets, however he also has his only career fight, v. Derek Dorsett, that resulted in him missing the final 17 games last season, and earlier this year Corey Potter stepped on his head during warmup in Columbus.
Luckily for Hall, and Oiler fans, he has bounced back from both freak/fluke injuries, and he'll be one of the few reason to bother watching tonight's battle of basement dwellers.

Tom Renney has been taking a lot of heat ever since the Oilers' strong start fizzled out. Fans and media alike have been very irritated with the amount of ice time, or lack there of, for the three young studs on the team: Hall, Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins. It is fun to watch this young trio play, they are energetic and creative, but I do agree with the conservative approach to their ice time.

Verbal sparring on the bench? Squabbling among teammates? You'd have to be a fly on the wall in the Edmonton Oilers dressing room to get the full context of the "fighting and bickering" captain Shawn Horcoff referred to today in the wake of Tom Renney's post-game blast Monday, but the few tidbits that have been uttered tweak the curiosity.

I understand the sentiment that prompted Tom Renney to step away from his role as the designated piñata for a sizeable segment of frustrated Edmonton Oilers fans and direct some criticism toward his players after Monday's 3-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks.
