One of the Oilers’ primary storylines this season has been the play of rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The 18-year old has been highly impressive, not only earning his spot on the team but playing so well that many are ready to anoint him as the team’s best centre.
What few people realize, however, is how far his offensive production has fallen off over the course of 2011-12.

When I think about players who were tough as nails and mean as hell, I think about Bobby Baun and Keith Magnuson and old-school guys from later days in this part of the hockey world like Kevin Lowe and Jason Smith. And I think about Ladislav Smid. That's right, Laddy Smid.

Taylor Hall must have a love-hate relationship when it comes to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has 2-5-7 in four career games v. the Jackets, however he also has his only career fight, v. Derek Dorsett, that resulted in him missing the final 17 games last season, and earlier this year Corey Potter stepped on his head during warmup in Columbus.
Luckily for Hall, and Oiler fans, he has bounced back from both freak/fluke injuries, and he'll be one of the few reason to bother watching tonight's battle of basement dwellers.

Tom Renney has been taking a lot of heat ever since the Oilers' strong start fizzled out. Fans and media alike have been very irritated with the amount of ice time, or lack there of, for the three young studs on the team: Hall, Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins. It is fun to watch this young trio play, they are energetic and creative, but I do agree with the conservative approach to their ice time.
