With the NHL locked out, the mantle of “world’s best hockey league” falls to the 26-team Kontinental Hockey League. That league’s second leading scorer is one-time Edmonton Oilers forward Patrick Thoresen.
Which makes it time for my annual piece wondering why he isn’t in the NHL.

It's been all talk and little or no action, at least at the NHL level, while we wait for Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr to sort things out, but the consolation is some of the gab we've been getting over the past few days has a hopeful and common sense ring to it.

Jordan Eberle played 20 AHL games over two seasons with Springfield, and he racked up nine goals and 23 points. Since then he's played two NHL seasons, including an excellent 76-point campaign in 2011/2012. Will he think the AHL is beneath him?
Not a chance. I caught up to Eberle before he left for Oklahoma City and got his thoughts on the AHL, Justin Schultz, the Riders and even "Hall N' Ebs."
