Vancouver, Edmonton and Minnesota all have something in common – aside from the fact that they’re all in the Northwest Division. Each of those clubs has invited an unsigned, undrafted Vancouver Giant to training camp on a tryout deal.

Lost among all of the excitement over the electric foursome of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi and Linus Omark, Teemu Hartikainen established himself as an outstanding prospect in 2010-11. Hartikainen displayed a wide range of skills, posted solid AHL numbers at age 20 and impressed when called to the show. How good is he?

The conventional view is that the Edmonton Oilers are stuck with their goaltending tandem of Nikolai Khabibulin and Devan Dubnyk. The Oilers can’t move the former because of his decline in performance, his heavy contract, and they can’t dump him because of the over-35 clauses in the CBA. The Oilers don’t want to move the latter because he had a breakthrough in 2010-11 and provided the team with starter-calibre goaltending.
The reality, though, is that the Oilers do have a choice.
