Imitating Ken Holland

Aside from the Lou Lamoriello diehards, most people would agree that the best general manager in the NHL over the last decade or so is Ken Holland of the Detroit Red Wings. And while every year broadcasters, fans, and even NHL teams talk about adopting the model of the latest Stanley Cup winner, there’s been a persistent desire to emulate the Red Wings because of their success.

Fortunately for us, Red Wings G.M. Ken Holland has explained time and again different facets of his strategy, seemingly unafraid that people are going to start taking his advice to heart. And much of what he says is relevant for this year’s edition of the Oilers.

For a second preseason GDB in a row we are going to defer making any judgements about the quality of ice hockey being played by the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club thus far. Nor, will we discuss our level of excitement/non-excitement about the play of some of the players who may or may not be on the roster.

In life we celebrate milestones annually, but we seem to focus on specific years a bit more. First anniversaries, or 5th, 10th, 20th etc, they somehow seem a bit more important than a 6th, 11th or 21st. I’m not sure why we do this, but we do, and today I found myself doing the exact same thing.

North By Northwest

A year ago, I picked the Edmonton Oilers to finish 4th in the NW, 11th in the conference. They finished last in the NW, last in the conference and last in the league. Their minor league team was horrible, their veterans made headlines for failures, injuries, running their mouths and worse. They were frightful. They were major league in name only a season ago. Where do they go from here?

We’ve been rolling around an idea in our brain for a few years now. It started as a “gee, this would be a good idea” concept and later involved doing some research with a local engineer to see if it had any legs.
