Jeff Petry and Devan Dubnyk received two-year contracts yesterday moments before the NHL announced that Sam Gagner was one of 16 players who filed for arbitration. Much of the early reaction from fans and the media was that Petry was a great signing, while Dubnyk got overpaid. I agree Petry's deal was good, but I'm not sold that Dubnyk was that bad of a contract.

In the post lockout-era, Edmonton has been quite good at avoiding arbitration. They often sign their player before the hearing begins, but have been known to trade the player before the hearing too.

With the two-year deal the Edmonton Oilers just gave him, Devan Dubnyk could walk away from hockey in the summer of 2014 and never play another NHL game and he'd have more money in his jeans than you or I will make in a lifetime.

Sam Gagner heads to salary arbitration

On the same day that the Edmonton Oilers announced new contracts for restricted free agents Jeff Petry and Devan Dubnyk, another elected to file for salary arbitration. Sam Gagner is one of 15 players to file for arbitration this summer.

Tom Renney Joins The Detroit Red Wings

As it turns out, former Edmonton Oilers head coach Tom Renney wasn’t out of work for very long. As per Darren Dreger’s report above, the Detroit Red Wings have hired him on a three-year deal which will see him serve as Mike Babcock’s associate coach.
