Whoooooo boy. We thought the Photoshop Contest for the plans of the Oilers Brass was a great contest. But the entries for the Ryan Smyth Returning contest are even more epic if that is somehow possible. With a $94 gift card at Oodle Noodle Downtown up for grabs - one of the best places to eat on planet Earth as far as we are concerned - the entries were piling up in WanyeMail this week.

We were going to cap the finalists at 10 but extended it to 14. Why? Because we are drunk on power and potentially still drunk from Bud Lights, that's why.

The Oilers dipped into the free agent pool, and signed gritty veteran forward Ben Eager to a three-year deal, at a reported $1.1 million cap hit today. Eager is tenacious, at times unpredictable, and he's popular with the ladies in Vancouver; at least the one who flashed him during the playoffs.

I've been up for a few hours in anticipation of today because July 1 is a very important day in the Brownlee household. It's Canada Day. It's my wedding anniversary. My brother-in-law, Arman, is celebrating his 50th birthday. And there's that NHL free agency thing . . .

Happy Canada Day! There are reasons to celebrate! For such a small population, mighty Canada scores well in the important disciplines (wine, women and song) and most of us wake up today enjoying peaceful waters.

Busy Day: Smid, Souray and Fraser (Updated)

‘Twas the day before free agency, and for the Oilers it was a busy one. First came news that the team had inked pending restricted free agent Ladislav Smid to a two-year contract. This was followed by the announcement that Sheldon Souray had been placed on unconditional waivers for the purposes of buying out his contract. Then we learned that Colin Fraser, freshly traded to Los Angeles in the Smyth deal, is seriously injured and will require surgery – leaving Kings’ G.M. Dean Lombardi miffed and a question mark on what happens next.

Steve Tambellini is slated to address these issues at a press conference any minute now.
