Hands up anyone who picked an LAK/NJD Stanley Cup final heading into the season. Anyone? Bueller?

It's been an especially odd post-season, with favorites falling and previously apathetic fanbases awakening suddenly to their team's unexpected success. If the Kings win the cup, as they should, will that victory be met with a bang or a whimper in Los Angeles? To be fair to that city, it has been so long since their team enjoyed any notable success that they can be forgiven if they forgot about hockey for awhile.

The Edmonton Oilers have devoted enormous resources and placed great importance on amateur procurement since 2010 spring. The rebuild has already delivered the top end of the draft to the NHL. The second and third rounders are on the way, and some of the depth picks are showing signs of life. How important is it to score a home run deep in the draft? What does a 5th round home run look like? Do the Oilers have any on the way?

Big Decisions: The Chris Pronger Trade

Officially, the Edmonton Oilers rebuild started midway through 2009-10, as a team built to make that last push for the playoffs imploded spectacularly, finishing last in the NHL. Unofficially, the real trigger was the departure of the catalyst from the 2006 run, Chris Pronger. In the Pronger trade, the Oilers acquired good value in terms of assets, but terrible value from a ‘win right now’ perspective.

More than any other action, arguably it was the Pronger trade that set the Oilers on the course they are now.

It is great for fans and the media to get ready for another off-season full of change for the Edmonton Oilers, but is it beneficial for the Oilers? Since the spring of 2009, the Oilers have made significant changes every off-season, on and off the ice, but despite all of those changes the Oilers haven't seen much improvement.

Will the changes they make this spring and summer produce the results they want?
