Top-six and bottom-six are terms that are instantly recognizable to the typical hockey fan. Used to describe NHL rosters for as long as I can remember, the former refers to the skilled, scoring forwards typically though to inhabit a team’s first two lines while the latter denotes checkers and physical players who occupy the lower rungs on the league’s forward ladder.
It’s a term which is increasingly out-of-step with the way that general managers and head coaches at hockey’s highest level build and operate their rosters. And anyone using that lens to evaluate the early success of the Edmonton Oilers is going to be missing a pretty significant piece of the puzzle.

I had a chance to sit down with Ryan to talk about the Oilers, the changing environment of sports coverage, and whether or not the Oilers will make the playoffs. Here's part of our conversation. Enjoy.

It was, is and will always be one of those moments frozen in time for Oiler fans.

It’s a slow news day for the Oilers so I figured I would highlight a few sections from the interview that Wayne Gretzky did with the NHL Network before yesterday’s game against the Penguins. In the interview, Gretzky talks glowingly about Connor McDavid and reveals what advice he gave to the young phenom.
