The Oilers simply need to play smarter. They played decent for long stretches against the Flames, Canucks and Coyotes, but when they made a mistake it usually was a major gaff that resulted in a goal against.
Right now, the Oilers issues are more about a lack of focus and concentration than the system.

The Edmonton Oilers are 0-3-1 through their first four games. It’s an ugly time for a franchise that absolutely could not afford another slow start. Where does the team go from here?

When you give up 15 goals in the first three games of the season, for the second year in a row, it is extremely valid to question if the defensive system Dallas Eakins and Craig Ramsay have put in place, and players Craig MacTavish provided them with are good enough.
I realize it is only three games, but even the Buffalo Sabres defensive game looks better. The players, coaches and management all need to be better of this season could be over before the snow flies.

The wonderful baseball writer Bill James told the best procurement, development and deployment story I've ever heard in one of his Baseball Abstracts. It's a great story and teaching tool for fans of any sport, and a valuable lesson for sports franchises. Procurement of talent is one thing, but getting productive years before saying goodbye is vital to an organization. How are the Oilers doing in this regard?
