So last night we were sitting around watching the World Cup of Hockey match on the TV waiting for the NHL season to begin. Whether or not the tournament is a real thing or a brilliant negotiating tactic against the Olympics remains to be seen.

What does not remain to be seen is the impact of Connor McDavid.

Canada becomes 2-0 and sends Americans packing in 4-2 victory.

Canada vs USA, in Toronto with a chance to go 2-0 against a long time rival, what an exciting game to be had, one may have thought. But while the fast paced hockey from both sides excited the building and the livings rooms of Canadian fans, one team came out on top by a considerable landslide and no close and exciting game was to be had.

One year ago, the Edmonton Oilers left the station with eight defensemen on their opening night roster. Good that they did, as the likely extra man—Brandon Davidson—turned out to be a long awaited minor league player who did develop properly. With the news today that Eric Gryba has accepted an invite from the Edmonton Oilers, could we see 8D again opening night this year?

Eric Gryba and the Rest of the Oiler PTOs

The Oilers invited Eric Gryba to a professional tryout on September 2nd. Nearly three weeks later, Gryba finally accepted the offer, and will now be attending the Oilers training camp come Thursday. Gryba's grit and toughness make him an excellent depth defenceman, and would very much help the Oilers this season. Along with Gryba, the Oilers have signed six other players to PTO contracts this summer. Let's take a look at the options.

WCOH GAME 2: Canada vs. USA

What a glorious day.

Canada can knock the USA out of the tournament with a victory tonight. A win would give the Red and White a 2-0 record and guarantee them a berth in the playoff round, along with Team Europe, while the USA would play the Czech Republic in a meaningless game on Thursday.

How fun would it be to end the American's tournament after only two games? I'd say about a trillion times more fun than it was to be a fan of any Canadian NHL team last year. You've earned it.
