HALL AT CENTRE: WHY NOT TAKE A LONG LOOK?

If the Edmonton Oilers are thinking of taking a look at Taylor Hall as a centre, and my take is they absolutely should, there's no harm in having him see a stretch at pivot as soon as possible.

In the first period of tonight's Young Stars game against San Jose's rookies, Alex Plante fell at the end of a fight and hit the back of his head. It is exactly the kind of thing the Oilers (and Plante) badly needed to avoid.

Even in Penticton you could sense it was a Battle of Alberta last night, even though most of the players on the ice will likely never suit up in the NHL for the Flames or Oilers, the rookies for both clubs played like it mattered to them.

It was a summer that didn’t lack for storylines – between Sheldon Souray’s uncertain status, Nikolai Khabibulin’s court case, and of course the selection of Taylor Hall, there was a lot to talk about. One item noticeable by its absence was the Oilers’ annual star free agent chase, as Steve Tambellini instead focused on tweaking his bottom six. With training camp nigh, it felt like a good time to review what the Oilers G.M. did.

Sheldon Souray got what he deserved when Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini declared Monday the often-injured and perpetually unhappy defenceman wouldn't be welcome at training camp.
