2013 has not been a good year for the Oilers.
They won 32 of 89 games going 32-46-11, and only Florida (71) and Buffalo (74) compiled fewer points than the Oilers' 75. It was not a banner calendar year for the Oilers, and tonight they will try to end a disturbing trend vs. one of the top teams in the western conference.
The Oilers are 1-11-1 against the top-eight teams in the west since October and have been outscored 53-27. They beat Colorado 8-2, but in the other 12 games they've been dominated by combined scores of 51-19.

Nail Yakupov will not be playing tonight. He is a healthy scratch. I understand and agree with what the Oilers head coach is doing with him.

The past eight Oilers seasons have been painful for everyone involved. The players are sick of losing, management and the five head coaches are tired of it, the fans have to give each other a pep talk before every game just to keep watching and even the media is tired of covering the constant losing.
There are some things none of the aforementioned groups can change instantly, like suddenly making the Oilers contenders, however, there are some small things that can and must be changed to make the process more bearable.

Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins announced this morning that Nail Yakupov will be a healthy scratch against the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday.

As I have watched the Oilers this season the areas of weakness for this club have been obvious. They are not built to compete with big teams that like to play heavy in the corners and in front of the net.
The defense is full of players suited for second and third pairing roles. Players like Petry and Ference are being asked to play as first pairing guys. This is a tall order for players like this at the best of times and even harder when your group's commitment to playing defense is average at best.
