The NHL finally released their 2013/2014 schedule, and at the same time they came up with the most idiotic division name in the history of pro sports, METROPOLITAN.
I would have preferred they went back to naming divisions and conferences after people who made signficant impacts to hockey, but I understand why they stayed with Pacific, Central and Atlantic, they are known and make sense geographically, but Metropolitan is just another notch on Gary Bettman's belt of head-scratching decisions.
Regardless, the Oiler schedule is out and, if you like variety, it is the best in years.

Usually when you come face-to-face with a glare like that, it means you done goofed, or you play for Ottawa. Now it could be because you’re training with him and Steven Stamkos.
Wait what?!?! Oh, you heard me.
Gary Roberts as in the man-beast who terrorized the league for parts of three decade. Steven Stamkos as in the guy who sniped 60 goals in a season. You could be hanging out with these guys. Well, not really “hanging out,” per se. Allow me to explain…
The offseason is getting shorter and shorter. You can’t just let your fitness go to crap in the summer, because once the season fires up again, you’ll look like a pylon out there.
Enter: the last team standing
The Nike Hockey Facebook experience at www.lastteamstanding.ca lets players create a team with their friends and show how they’re dedicating the summer to training. The page has training videos designed by Gary Roberts, and Toronto’s strength and conditioning coach from 2002-2009, Matt Nichol. Obviously, these two guys know their stuff.
But Steve, what’s in it for me? I’ll tell you, whatever your name is!

Among the things I didn't expect to see this summer: Craig MacTavish going against the grain (and channeling Moneyball) by shopping in the Russian market. A year ago, the Oilers drafted Yak City #1 overall, and this summer the organization is adding Russians--going against the market--in hopes of value add. Sound like Moneyball? Yes. Yes it does.

**This footage of game 6 vs. the Jets in 1990. Oiler fans might want to fast forward to the 9:30 mark.***
The Winnipeg Jets haven't played in Edmonton since March 29th, 1996 when Miroslav Satan had a pair of goals in a 3-2 Oilers victory while Nikolai Khabibulin was in goal for the Jets, and Ryan Smyth was in his rookie season.
However, according to my source, that 17-year drought will end October 1st when the Jets return to Rexall Place for opening night against the Edmonton Oilers.
